3 Clouds What am I talking about? What are clouds? What do they support? What are the IPPLT issues? Cloud compu@ng is s@ll an evolving paradigm. Its defini@ons, use cases, underlying technologies, issues, risks, and benefits will be refined in a spirited debate by the public and private sectors. These defini@ons, atributes, and characteris@cs will evolve and change The NIST Defini,on of Cloud Compu,ng v15, Peter Mell and Tim Grance Na@onal Ins@tute of Standards and Technology, Informa@on Technology Laboratory

11 Sidebar This is a U.S. General Services Administra@on computer system that is "FOR OFFICIAL USE ONLY." This system is subject to monitoring. Therefore, no expecta,on of privacy is to be assumed. Individuals found performing unauthorized ac@vi@es are subject to disciplinary ac@on including criminal prosecu@on. (empahsis added)

13 What s out there Amazon Elas@c Compute Cloud (EC2) Select machines (instances) to deploy your applica@ons Standard instances (designed for regular applica@ons) E.g. 1.7 GB of memory, 1 EC2 Compute Unit (1 virtual core with 1 EC2 Compute Unit), 160 GB of instance storage, 32- bit plarorm High- Memory instances (designed for high throughput applica@ons) E.g GB of memory, 13 EC2 Compute Units (4 virtual cores with 3.25 EC2 Compute Units each), 850 GB of instance storage, 64- bit plarorm High- CPU instances (designed for compute- intensive applica@ons) E.g. 1.7 GB of memory, 5 EC2 Compute Units (2 virtual cores with 2.5 EC2 Compute Units each), 350 GB of instance storage, 32- bit plarorm Amazon defined a EC2 Compute Unit as providing the capacity of a GHz 2007 Opteron or 2007 Xeon processor Select OS and so[ware on the instances 9 OS available (e.g. Red Hat Enterprise Linux, Windows Server 2003, Open Solaris...) Tons of so[ware available Databases (e.g. DB2, MySQL...) Batch processing (e.g. Hadoop, Condor...) Web servers (e.g. Apache HTTP, IIS/Asp.NET...) Applica@on development environments (e.g. Ruby on Rails...) Applica@on servers (e.g. Websphere, Java Applica@on Server...) Video encoding/streaming so[ware (e.g. Window Media Server...) OS and so[ware are pre- package into Amazon Machine Images (AMIs) that can be deploy on the instances You can roll your own AMIs as well that contain your applica@ons, libraries, data and associated configura@on If you create your own AMIs, they need to be uploaded to Amazon S3 for storage According to Amazon, once AMI and machine instances are selected, the instances would be up and running in minutes
14 License Typically 20+ pages (mostly saying what you can t do), plus what you can do if you pay the bills

19 Business model Cost nothing to get started Free 500 MB of storage and enough CPU and bandwidth to support around 5 million page views a month If free quota offered is not enough, one can enable billing and pay for more Only pay for what you use Billing is based on the daily resource budget set by the user e.g. A user can set his daily budget for to $1 As long as the user s@ll has free le[, no charge A[er her free has run out, charge only to a maximum of $1 per day (as indicated in his budget) a[er which any access to her web applica@on would result in HTTP 403 error
20 MS Internet- scale cloud services plarorm hosted in Microso[ data centers can be developed using Microso[ Visual Studio development environment and Microso[.NET Framework Non- Microso[ languages and environments will be supported in the near future Business model During Community Technology Preview (CTP), available free of charge Subject to the following usage limits Total compute usage: 2000 VM hours Cloud storage capacity: 50GB Total storage bandwidth: 20GB/day A[er launch (currently scheduled for November 2009) Pay only for what you use
21 Compute = $0.12 / hourstorage = $0.15 / GB stored / monthstorage Transac@ons = $0.01 / 10KBandwidth = $0.10 in / $0.15 out / GB Windows Azure has separate SLA s for compute and storage. Guarantee that when you deploy two or more role instances in different fault and upgrade domains your Internet facing roles will have external connec, vity at least 99.95% of the,me. Addi, onally, monitor all of your individual role instances and detect within two minutes when a role instance s process is not running and ini,ate correc,ve ac,on (we will publish by PDC the full details of our up,me promise for individual role instances). For storage, we guarantee that at least 99.9% of the,me we will successfully process correctly formaped requests that we receive to add, update, read and delete data. We also guarantee that your storage accounts will have connec, vity to our Internet gateway.

24 What s IPPLT Intellectual Property / patent / / CI / PO / etc Privacy Privacy / data protec@on Licensing Trust
25 What are the issues? To provide flexible licensing To provide licensing models that can be implemented autonomically Same goes for IP/P/&T

31 What changes in a cloud? Cloud is providing an environment for various services, either directly to end user or via 3 rd party intermediary. A meta- manager that controls externali@es in addi@on to licenses? eg a Trust manager? Privacy manager? Sarbanes- Oxley compliance manager? Jurisdic@onal manager? etc etc
