3 Greetings, From the Podium It is my distinct pleasure to welcome you to the sixth season of the SMART Orchestra in which we are celebrating great music of Russian composers. It is incredible to believe that we have already shared five years of spectacular orchestral music through the talents of the Texas Hill Country. As many of you remember, last year we celebrated our first themed season, with a focus on great music in dance. This season, we are focused on the music of Russian composers. We have incredible works planned to highlight and hopefully introduce you to some of the most imaginative and exhilarating pieces penned for symphony orchestra. In our fall concert we will explore the many musical faces of one of Russia s most celebrated composers, Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov. On a musical journey around the world, we will hear Rimsky-Korsakov s view of far off lands and exotic places through Russian eyes. We are desperately excited to collaborate with the River City Ballet s annual production of Pytor Ilyich Tchaikovsky s timeless ballet The Nutcracker. This is our second year to work with the River City Ballet, and we have many new additions to the program. We hope you will join us for this momentous community event. In addition to the Nutcracker, and back by popular demand, we will host a special Christmas concert to bring in the Yuletide cheer with some of our favorite Christmas carols and the SMART Orchestras Christmas Sing-a-long. As we begin the second half of the season with our Pops Concert, we will dive deep into the sonic universe of some of Russia s contemporary composers. Closing the chapters of Tchaikovsky with his great 1812 Overture and Rimsky-Korsakov with his massive Russian Easter Overture, we will discover the sounds of the great Igor Stravinsky in excerpts from his Firebird Suite. It is truly the pinnacle to our celebration of Great Russian composers. Of course we will have our annual Side-By-Side concert with the talented students of the SMCISD Orchestra program, which will again feature a world premiere piece for its finale. Certainly not least is the Sixth Annual Benefit Gala: A Night to Remember VI, where we will reminisce over our favorite works from the season. Do not miss out on this fantastic season of Russian greats. And do not miss your chance to become a part of the SMART Orchestra. Whether you are in the audience, behind the ticket counter, on the stage, or standing on the podium, you are a vital part of our existence and the continued advancement of the orchestral experience in San Marcos. 4 T Our Mission he San Marcos Artists' Retention and Training Orchestra (SMART) is dedicated to enriching the lives of citizens in San Marcos and the surrounding areas through the orchestral experience. This mission is accomplished through a community concert series, public rehearsals, educational outreach, internship programs, and much more. The SMART Orchestra is designed to be an outlet for every individual interested in the study and performance of orchestral music and encourages participants to contribute their time, talent, and skill to better serve the orchestra s goals. Whether you are a member of our audience, performing in the SMART viola section, or serving on the SMART Board, your enthusiasm and curiosity are welcome in an environment of acceptance and growth. 5 National Finalist in the 2013 American Prize in Orchestral Conducting Christopher T. F. Hanson Conductor/Artistic Director & Founder Conductor, violinist, composer, pedagogue, and musicologist, Hanson enjoys performing with a large and eclectic group of ensembles in the state of Texas and abroad. Hanson holds three Masters degrees from Texas State University in Music History, Music Theory, and Music Composition. He is currently working on his PhD in School Improvement at Texas State University, with a focus on the history and evolution of fine arts education in public schools. His research on African- American composer Edmond Dédé has afforded him an array of speaking engagements and publishing opportunities and several of his new chamber works for small string and wind ensembles received their debut performances in As a violinist, Hanson enjoys performing with the Victoria, Mid-Texas, and Corpus Christi Symphony Orchestras. He also performs as a violinist and vocalist with the string jazz trio No Strings Attached. Hanson currently resides in Austin, Texas and works as the orchestra director for San Marcos Consolidated Independent School District (SMCISD). Hanson is the founder and artistic director of the SMART Orchestra, a community-based orchestra created to encourage string education, established in the city of San Marcos in In the near future, Hanson hopes to continue his success at the podium by seeking more opportunities to study, perform, and teach through string education initiatives.

6 T Instructors and Interns he SMART Orchestra is proud to offer several instructional and internship positions to aspiring and professional musicians in the disciplines of wind, percussion, and string instruments. Through these appointments, instructors have the opportunity to exercise their teaching and performance techniques within an orchestral setting. Members of the orchestra are able to work side-by-side with SMART instructors during regular rehearsal times as well as in sectionals. This collaboration gives our musicians invaluable experience to develop their skills and succeed within their section. The primary function of our instructors and interns is to nurture an environment of personal and collaborative growth in our musicians and do so through peer education and musical mentoring. Corderro Salazar Assistant Artistic Director/Instructor Corderro Salazar is the Assistant Artistic Director of the SMART Orchestra. Salazar has been an active member of the SMART Orchestra since its creation six years ago. Salazar has performed with SMART on double bass and cello and is now co-conducting alongside Christopher Hanson. As a member of SMART, Salazar s goals with the program are to promote community awareness of symphonic music, as well as to contribute to and support the community. Salazar holds a bachelor s degree in Music Education from Texas State University and is currently the middle school orchestra director at Goodnight and Miller Middle Schools. Salazar is also an alumnus of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Music Fraternity.

7 HyunJung Burrow Instructor HyunJung Burrow received her second Masters of Music degree in cello performance from Texas State University in During this time, she served 2 years as the principal cellist in the Texas State Symphony Orchestra. While studying for her Bachelors degree at Chung-Nam National University in South Korea, she served as principal cellist for four years in the Music School Symphony Orchestra. After earning her degree, Mrs. Burrow was selected as one of the institution s most prestigious performers, giving her the opportunity to debut on the Korean television station, MoonWha Broadcast (MBC). In Korea, she was a part-time instructor at WooSong Practical College, teaching ear-training and sight-singing, and also held a tenure cellist position with the Daejeon Philharmonic Orchestra for 9 years before coming to the United States. Mrs. Burrow currently plays with the Mid- Texas Symphony, and teaches privately to students of all ages. Shawn Lewis Instructor Shawn Lewis is a Music Education Major at Texas State University. Throughout his term as a musician he has had the opportunity to play with the wind ensemble at Texas State, the award winning Mariachi group "Mariachi Aguila" of San Antonio Texas, the famous composer Alice Gomez's Latin Jazz group, conduct a male vocal ensemble called "The Serenading Sinfonians", play lead for Texas State's Orquestra del Rio salsa group and sing with Texas State's "University Singers" which is one of the top groups in the state. He aspires to become a Fine Arts Coordinator and will be going to graduate school for choral conducting in the next year.

9 Daniel Senties, Jr. Instructor Daniel Senties, Jr. was born in Laredo, Texas and graduated from A. C. Jones High School in Beeville, Texas. He has studied percussion with professors Ronald Schermerhorn, Kari Klier, and Butch Miles. He graduated from Texas State University with a Bachelor s of Music. Daniel recently won 1st place in the San Marcos Has Talent Competition with his duo, Transparent. He is currently the Worship Director at Church Unlimited San Marcos and the elementary music teacher at Science Hall Elementary in Kyle, Texas. Brian Vanderschaaf, D.M. Instructor Brian Vanderschaaf is a private oboe Instructor, teaching the middle school and high school levels in Round Rock and San Antonio. Dr. Vanderschaaf has performed as a soloist, orchestral and chamber musician in the USA and the Philippines, and has given master classes and recitals in venues ranging from grade school classrooms to the University of Santo Thomas in Manila. In the school year, Dr. Vanderschaaf s students achieved first chair placement in the Texas All Region band and orchestra competition and outstanding soloist during solo and ensemble performance. His entire studio received Division I rankings at the regional Texas State Solo-Ensemble Contest. In 2005, Dr. Vanderschaaf won the Lillian Fuchs Chamber Competition at Manhattan School of Music, New York. He also won first place in the Maia Quartet competition and the Midwest Double Reed Society Competition. He earned his bachelor s degree from the University of Iowa School of Music, Master of Music degree in performance from Manhattan School of Music, and Doctor of Musical Arts degree from Texas Tech University.

10 SMCISD ORCHESTRAS ORCHESTRA IS IN OUR SCHOOLS! SMCISD now has 8 different orchestras in the district at both middle schools and the high school. 11 Xandria Quichocho Intern Raised in San Antonio, Texas, Xandria Quichocho began studying the cello in late elementary school on an instrument smaller and older than she was. Nevertheless, she persevered and continued to study though her high school years at John Paul Stevens High School under the direction of Nile Wilson, going on to compete in Regional Solo and Ensemble twice and even advancing to State in both Solo and Duet her senior year. She was a member of Texas Future Music Educators for three years, played in the Region Orchestra for two, and held an officer position in the orchestra for two years. Xandria is currently studying Music Education at Texas Lutheran University in Seguin on the Jones Performance Award, among other academic scholarships. 12 Taylor Wilson Intern Taylor Wilson is a currently a student at Texas State University s School of Music where he is pursuing his bachelor s degree in music with a minor in business administration. He has performed in Texas State's Opera Theatre's performance of Don Giovanni as the principle mandolinist and has performed with the Troopers Drum & Bugle Corps for the 2013 and 2014 season on baritone. He is an active member of the Gamma Phi chapter of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia at Texas State University and held an executive board position during the school year. Taylor is currently in the top Salsa ensemble at Texas State University, Salsa Del Rio, and plans on auditioning for another drum corps for his age-out season in The Texas State University School of Music is proud to offer classes for young string players in the San Marcos area.
