Social Media Marketing is targeted efforts by marketers to use social media channels as a way to engage, attract and converse with consumers Social media channels provide companies the opportunity to participate in conversations among consumers that were previously held among themselves In short, social media marketing can provide two-way communication between consumers and brands/companies

5 Facebook Best Practices Create a unique URL at Integrate with Facebook Causes. Be a useful resource, provide value to your likers by posting interesting and useful content. Create custom tabs for programs and spots where people can donate: Ask questions, engage fans and get them talking. Utilize multimedia elements photos/videos. If disaster strikes, be honest and provide feedback quickly. Free monitoring tools: Facebook Insights

6 Facebook Community Connections Like other organizations Facebook has made it easier for pages to link with other pages to show their support. Using sign before an organization will allow you to link to the organization when you refer to them within a post. Post on the walls of other pages. Post links to events and programs that are being held which may be relevant to your likers.

7 Twitter Best Practices Follow interesting and relevant people. Use URL shorteners like Post on regular base (at least 5x per week). Create a timely editorial calendar. Demonstrate yourself as an expert. Share content that is interesting, relevant, timely and impactful. Listen to what is being said and respond accordingly. Free monitoring tools: Twitter search

Auto-retweets Manual retweets Create Twitter lists specifically for other organization and monitor them on a regular basis. Monitor the Twitter stream when relevant. Registering with Twitter groups as a non-profit/charitable organization:

9 Strategic Visibility List your organization s Facebook and Twitter page in as many places as possible: Website Marketing collateral Media material Outreach to members, volunteers and donors Business cards and signatures Create Foursquare venue when you are holding an event easy to do, free of charge.

10 Case Study: ASPCA On wall, ask questions, share pet tips, post cute timely photos and news articles with animal cruelty alerts. Have a donate custom tab. Photo and video sharing popular, encourage fans to post their own content. Push membership with tabs for special programs (Hundreds Rescued). Causes integration in which fans can write Care Notes.

11 Case Study: Breast Cancer Website On wall, share inspiration stories, events, relevant articles and compelling facts/statistics Have a custom tab specifically for donations (and it s the landing tab). Held a Million Fan March a campaign that in which if they reached a million fans by March, sponsors would donate $100,000 to Breast Cancer Research. Goal was exceeded by over a million. Embedded a Click to give mammograms and each day a fan clicks, a free mammogram is given. Tab in which users can share inspirational stories. Like the Animal Rescue Site
