SRJC graduates and employees receive a 10% tuition discount. Northern Arizona University guarantees admission to their traditional bachelor s degrees for SRJC students who complete the IGETC with at least a 2.5 GPA. Students who have completed at least 24 transferable units with a 2.0 GPA or higher may be considered. CA residents do not pay out-of-state tuition. Strayer University (Virginia) guarantees admission to their online programs to SRJC associate degree graduates, who also earn credit for all lower division general education requirements, and waives the application fee. Up to 84 SRJC units can be counted toward a Strayer bachelor s degree. 3 CSU Instant Admissions Humboldt State and Sonoma State Universities will again offer Instant Admissions services for students planning to transfer in Fall Instant Admissions enables you to receive early admission to these campuses based on an in-person evaluation of your academic history and educational plan. To participate in Instant Admissions for Fall 2009 you must show that, prior to transfer as a junior, you will complete at least 60 CSU-transferable units, among which are 30 units of CSU General Education courses completed with a C grade or better. Those 30 GE units must include all of Area A (Oral Communication, Written Communication, and Critical Thinking) and B4 (Quantitative Reasoning). There may be additional course completion deadlines or higher GPA requirements for some majors. Students interested in Instant Admissions must: Verify their transfer readiness. You may do this by meeting with a counselor or printing your Degree Audit from the SRJC Weblink. Make an appointment at the Transfer Center for one of the dates listed on page 7. Obtain transcripts for all coursework completed For Sonoma State those transcripts must be official, sealed documents. For Humboldt State official sealed transcripts must be delivered to the Transfer Center by October 22, Come to the Transfer Center in Bussman Hall right away to get ready for Instant Admissions! Cross Enrollment at SSU Did you know that you can take classes at Sonoma State while you are still an SRJC student? It s called cross enrollment and here s how it works: Any student enrolled in at least six units at SRJC (the home campus) is allowed to enroll in one class per semester at SSU (the host campus). Students must have permission from their home campus, be admitted to host campus classes on a space-available basis, and pay only a $10.00 administration fee. Cross enrollment is intended to give community college students an opportunity to take lower division courses that are not available at their college or are not formally articulated with the university. It is most appropriate for lower division major preparation. It is also a way for students to gain experience with the university prior to transfer. Your SRJC counselor can help you decide whether you should take advantage of cross enrollment. What is a TAG? Would you like to know at least a year before you transfer exactly which courses you must take and the grades you must earn to guarantee your admission to any UC (except Berkeley or Los Angeles), Humboldt State, San Jose State, Sonoma State, Dominican University, Golden Gate University, or St. Mary s College? Such a guarantee exists! It is called a Transfer Admission Guarantee (TAG) and now is the time to apply for a TAG if you want to transfer in Fall You may be eligible to enter into a TAG if you have completed enough transferable units and will complete transfer admission requirements.you can find more information about the required number of units and grade point average for each of our TAG university partners at by selecting Transfer Guarantees on the sidebar and linking to the Transfer Admission Agreement Grid. You must sign your TAG application for Fall 2009 by the following deadlines: Humboldt State Nov 30, 2008 Sonoma State Sept 30, 2008 San Jose State Oct 29, 2008 UC Davis Sept 30, 2008 UC Irvine Nov 20, 2008 UC Merced Nov 30, 2008 UC Riverside Oct 31, 2008 UC San Diego Dec 1, 2008 UC Santa Barbara Oct 27, 2008 UC Santa Cruz Oct Dominican Univ. 6 Transfer 1A: University Starts Here Being a transfer student means that you are beginning your bachelor s degree right here at Santa Rosa Junior College. Here s how it works: 1. Unit requirements: The average bachelor s degree program requires that you complete 120 units. Those units are divided into lower division (freshman and sophomore) and upper division (junior and senior) coursework. You must complete at least 60 units to reach junior standing (upper division status). Like other community colleges, SRJC offers the lower division courses accepted as comparable to the ones that freshmen and sophomores must take at a university (thus, they are transferable). Community colleges do not offer upper division coursework, so you will transfer to a university to complete those units and graduate with a bachelor s degree. 2. Subject requirements: In addition to the unit requirement for your degree, there are subject area requirements. Those requirements may be for general education or major preparation. If you complete all of your subject requirements and have not reached 60 units, you will take elective courses of your choosing before you can transfer. 3. General education: Most of your lower division courses will be for the purposes of general education (GE). For example you must complete at least 48 units of GE to graduate from a California public university, 39 of which are lower division. The GE requirements for independent and out-of-state universities may differ, but the ratio of lower to upper division units is similar. Each institution has it s own GE pattern that describes the number of units in each subject area that you must complete for graduation. There are also GE patterns that are accepted by the entire California State University (CSU) and University of California (UC) systems for transfer to any of their campuses. The CSU requires that students complete most of their lower division GE before transfer. 4. Major preparation: Your bachelor s degree will be granted in a specific discipline (your major). The university faculty that teaches in your major determines the unit and subject requirements for the degree. (You will petition to enter your major as a junior.) Among those requirements is lower division major preparation through which you demonstrate interest and ability in your chosen major. Some majors require very little such preparation, while other majors require many courses. Some of the preparation for your major can also be used to meet GE requirements. It is important to choose a major early and find out what preparation you will need to be admitted to your major. The UC requires that students complete most, if not all, of their major preparation before transfer. 5. Grades: Your overall academic performance, as measured by your grade point average (GPA), is another factor in being admitted to a university and earning your degree. There are minimum GPAs (usually around a C average) set for transfer students that vary slightly by system or institution. A higher minimum GPA is required for admission to popular campuses or majors. It is important for you to find out how to do well in your classes, in order to increase your transfer choices and chances. SRJC offers a rigorous course of study to prepare you for success when you transfer. Make an appointment with one of SRJC s transfer counselors to find out more about how to transfer to the university of your choice. Complete Transfer Requirements ASAP! It is important that you complete certain minimum general education courses early in your transfer preparation. For the CSU the "golden four" are critical. For the UC, it is the "essential seven". See below for details about these and other minimum transfer requirements. (See a counselor about competitive transfer preparation.) Don't delay! Counselors are available to help you plan your early completion of required courses. The golden four courses for admission to CSU are Area A (Speech, English 1A, and Critical Thinking) and Area B4 (Quantitative Reasoning) from the CSU General Education pattern. The essential seven transferable courses required for admission to UC are: 2 English composition courses, 1 course in Mathematical Concepts/Quantitative Reasoning, and 4 other courses chosen from at least two of the following areas: Arts and Humanities, Social and Behavioral Sciences, Physical and Biological Sciences. Many of the CSU and UC campuses require that these courses be completed by the end of the spring semester prior to the fall term you plan to attend, by summer for winter/spring transfer. It is NOT advisable to leave the required courses until the semester or summer term just before transfer. Don't delay! It is important to meet with a counselor to plan your early completion of required courses. Transfer TOPICS PAGE 6
