High school concurrent students may now attend SRJC without paying any fees except for parking and an $18 Student Health Services fee. Santa Rosa Junior College is offering 130 classes in the late afternoon with start times from 3:00 to 6:00 pm that might be convenient for high school students who want to concurrently enroll at the College. An electronic copy of the afternoon schedule will be sent to counselors when it is finalized. Counselors are encouraged to help students plan now to prepare their paperwork for spring enrollment. High school students will be able to register for spring classes on December 16. Concurrent Enrollment Program Request Forms are due to the SRJC Admissions and Records office no later than noon on Friday, December 13 in order to be processed prior to spring registration. For more information about concurrent enrollment at SRJC while still in high school, see your high school counselor or go to There are lots of reasons to attend a community college like SRJC. The department also offers many specialized courses in academic skills development, assistive technology and adapted physical education. Graduating high school seniors who have a verifiable disability may be eligible to receive services through SRJC s Disability Resources Department (typically students receiving special education services in high school are eligible for Disability Resources services). Each spring Disability Resources provides eligible high school seniors with transition services through an outreach program called Transition Club. At Transition Club students learn about accessing accommodations, participate in a brief college orientation, take English and Math placement tests with extended time, and gain access to EARLY fall registration. Transition Club takes place on both the Santa Rosa and Petaluma campuses. For more information please call (Santa Rosa) or (Petaluma) or visit the department s home page at: Specialized courses in academic skills development, assistive technology and adapted physical education

5 PHARMACY TECHNOLOGY PROGRAM - CAREER TRACK Consider a career as a Pharmacy Technician! Pharmacy technicians work under the supervision of licensed pharmacists to provide health care services and medications to patients. Duties may include, but are not limited to, compounding medicinal drugs, preparing and labeling medicines, filling bottles and capsules with the correct quantity of medicine, issuing medicines to customers, stocking and taking inventory of prescription and over the counter medications, maintaining patients medication profiles on computerized or written records or forms, filling orders for unit doses and prepackaged pharmaceuticals, and preparing insurance claim forms. Good communication and interpersonal skills are essential. The SRJC Pharmacy Technician Program prepares students to be registered pharmacy technicians and for employment in a variety of pharmacy settings. The program is 25 units in three semesters, beginning Summer Upon successful completion of the program, students will be awarded the Pharmacy Technician certificate and are qualified to apply to the California State Board of Pharmacy for registration as a pharmacy technician. Graduates of the certificate program are also encouraged to sit for the National Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam. While not currently a state requirement for employment, many employers provide increased compensation to pharmacy technicians once they become nationally certified. For the clinical component, Pharmacy 154 A/B, a background check and two drug screenings are required. Students are strongly encouraged to pursue an AA/AS degree while building priority prior to the summer start. Must have a GED or be a high school graduate by the time the student applies to the California State Board of Pharmacy for licensure. More information Website: Director of the Pharmacy Technology Program: Diana Rangaves, PharmD, RPh drangaves@santarosa.edu GATEWAY TO COLLEGE: AN EXTRAORDINARY SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITY TO RE-ENGAGE HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS The mission of Gateway to College (GtC) is to engage students who are behind in high school credit or have dropped out of high school, to complete their high school diploma in a dual-credit program that fosters the development of the holistic student. GtC is a national program established in Portland, Oregon in Since then, the Gateway to College National Network has grown to 43 programs, and SRJC was recently awarded start-up funding for the first site to open in the North Bay. SRJC s Gateway to College collaborative program is made possible through the partnership with Petaluma City Schools, as well as surrounding K12 districts and community based organizations. Ongoing funding is provided via Average Daily Attendance (ADA) through the California K12 system, allowing students to participate free of costs including: tuition, books, and other required fees. The Gateway to College Program at SRJC is nearly halfway through the inaugural semester serving two cohorts of concurrently enrolled high school/college students. The faculty and staff have implemented culturally relevant, evidence-based strategies to build community and develop scholarly identity. High program standards combined with high levels of student motivation, have already helped students make dramatic increases in attendance and significant decreases in high risk behaviors. At this time, applications are being accepted for admission to the Spring 2014 semester. Prospective students must meet the following eligibility requirements: years of age 8th grade or above reading and writing level Deficient in high school credit (at least 15 credits behind) or never completed high school diploma before they stopped-out of high school Resident of California (any school district) Gateway to College informational sessions are scheduled for Tuesday, December 3rd and 17th at 6:00 PM, Petaluma Campus, Doyle Hall, room 229. Interested students, families, and community members are encouraged to attend to learn more about the program and receive application materials. Please contact Vanessa Luna Shannon, Director at Gateway@santarosa.edu or for more information. 5

6 PUENTE PROJECT AT SRJC Santa Rosa Junior College s Puente Project (Spanish for bridge ) is a national award-winning program that has helped prepare thousands of students for success in university studies. The Puente Project s mission is to increase the number of educationally underserved students who enroll in four-year colleges and universities, earn college degrees, and return to the community as mentors and leaders to future generations. If your goal is to transfer to a 4-year university, then this is the program for you. Puente is a year-long learning community of English 100 and Counseling 10 in the fall, and English 1A and Counseling 80 in the spring. In addition to acquiring the reading, writing, and critical thinking skills necessary to be successful in college, you will learn more about SRJC, higher education, and the transfer process. Puentistas benefit by working with Puente alumni-mentors, who have successfully completed the Puente Program, and by working with a professional mentor from our community. In addition, we have numerous events throughout the year to build community and visit fouryear colleges. If you re interested in joining this highly interactive and prestigious learning community, please contact Liz Giron at lgiron@santarosa.edu on the Santa Rosa Campus or Geoff Navarro at gnavarro@santarosa.edu on the Petaluma Campus for more information. COLLEGE PREVIEW EVENTS Students interested in attending SRJC after high school should plan now to attend one of two College Preview events planned for spring. College Preview Day is an opportunity to visit SRJC, find out about the programs and services offered, and take a tour of our beautiful campuses. College Preview Days are scheduled at the Petaluma Campus on Saturday, February 22, 2014 and at the Santa Rosa Campus on Saturday, March 1, The events start at 10:00 a.m. Mark your calendars now to save the date! DAY UNDER THE OAKS 2014 This open house and community education fair extends throughout the Santa Rosa Campus and features the SRJC s many academic, cultural and student life offerings.
