Introduction to LED technology LED diode lighting technology will completely replace the current technology used in the field of illuminating engineering. In fact, a revolution is taking place, with regards to the entity, speed and proportion of the possible lighting effects, the likes of which have not been seen for over thirty years, since the introduction of gas light bulbs. Betalux streetlamps utilise the latest generation of high efficiency LED technology. LED lighting provides for excellent reliability, safety and durability over time. LED devices, thanks to the use of electronic transformers, provide for instantaneous functionality, activation and restarting. LEDs do not have arc tube lamps nor light bulbs, thereby rendering them resistant to both vibrations and shocks. LEDs contain no mercury nor any other toxic substances and therefore comply with the requirements of the RoHS directive (Restriction of Hazardous Substances - restriction of the use of certain hazardous substances for the manufacture of various types of electrical and electronic devices). The absence of hazardous polluting substances means that these products do not require any special waste disposal procedures. With their high efficiency (150 lumens/w), the LEDs utilised by Betalux are manufactured by of one of the most advanced companies in the field of semiconductors. The same company, which some decades ago invented the Blue LEDs that are now the basis for today s ultra-bright white LEDs, has now developed this high-efficiency LED that offers up to 150 lumens/w, in comparison to other products currently on the market with efficiencies ranging between 80 and 110 lm/w. Our standard products utilise LEDs with colour temperatures of K. LEDs with warmer colours can be provided upon request, but these offer reduced lighting efficiency. In fact, LED technology offers a meticulous selection of tones in the field of white light. In the field of public lighting, the colours of our cities and historical centres have been flattened over the last ten years, distorting everything that has been built by our artists and designers throughout history. The pursuit of energy savings has oriented the market towards the use of sodium vapour lamps, which have a typical yellow/red colour that renders everything that they illuminate monochromatic. Today, the introduction of LED lighting means high energy efficiency, an extended working life and exceptional colour rendering. 1

Characteristics of LED technology The new IESNA/ANSI standards define a method for the design of roadways and outdoor environments based upon effective perceived visibility instead of simply on the quantity of light emitted by a lighting source. Besides this, other factors must be considered such as spectral distribution of the emitting source, which has proved to be a determinant factor in night vision, increasing safety without the need of increasing illumination leading to the consequent decrease of installed power. When the intensity of the radiation becomes particularly weak, the maximum sensitivity of the eye is achieved for a monochromatic source of a wavelength equal to 507 nm (green - blue colour), going from the condition of photopic vision (in daylight conditions) and that of scotopic vision (night time conditions). The sensitivity of the eye to yellow and red light is greatly reduced, while the response to green and blue light is greatly increased. Clearly if the specifications of a lamp have been determined using photopic characteristics, but the application conditions are scotopic (as is the case in the majority of night time lighting applications), the specification values will not give an accurate indication of the total effective light produced. Spectral graphic comparison The exact total amount of light produced is obtained by multiplying the energy measured at every wavelength by the sensitivity curve of the eye and summing the results. As has been shown by comparisons made, in night time lighting conditions, LEDs guarantee a savings, compared to sodium vapour lamps, that varies between 26% and 63%. The advantage is much higher comparing with incandescent or halogen lighting (usually used more often in indoor applications), arriving at up to 350%. The calculation of the average illumination flux has been made taking into consideration the long life span compared to traditional lamps, with performance varying from between 40,000 and 60,000 hours of use against the 20,000 hours of the best traditional lamps. This reflects on the reduced maintenance costs and on an average gain in terms of illumination that can be valued at about 46%. Finally, one of the most important strong points of this class of street lighting is the possibility of aiming the light beam in such a manner that the roadway may be lighted best, reducing light pollution to a minimum (as per recent regional regulations in regard to light pollution LR 15/2005). This permits the lowering of the total light flux from the lamp with a consequent decrease of installed power while maintaining the surface luminance high. An additional advantage coming from the ability to collimate the light beam is a greater penetration of the light through heavy rain or fog, not because of the colour of the light but thanks to the geometric composition of the lamp. This structure, made up of a matrix of luminous points with independent optics, makes this lamp much more efficient in the presence of poor atmospheric conditions. 2

INNOVATION IN TECHNOLOGY The series of Basic Modules is assembled with and connected to the Power Supply Module inside of which are found the electronics. The electronics used in the Betalux lighting systems is based upon a system of thick film hybrid circuits on a ceramic base. This is a technology originally from military applications but that is also used in the spheres of automobile manufacture, electro-medical apparatus, and telecommunications infrastructure and in all the applications where the greatest reliability and stability of systems is required. The functions of this component are numerous and completely innovative for the application of roadway illumination. The innovation is surely due to the presence inside of each and every street lamp of a Logic Module capable of autonomously managing the functions of the device toward energy savings and in the safeguarding of the life of the street lamp itself. Below we will give an overview of these functions. Variable lighting intensity: adapting the lighting intensity besides in function of the type of roadway but also in function of the traffic flow intensity as is required by the (CEN/TR / 2004) regulation. Management of information points and messaging: by way of the ultra low power radio network it is possible to transmit roadway traffic conditions or safety information, and messages that may be visualised on luminous panels placed in strategic locations. Electrocution protection: by way of sensors that detect any eventual dangerous dispersions of electrical current, these are notified to the maintenance personnel and voltage to the different power supply panels is immediately disconnected. Pole knockdown detection: an acceleration sensor reveals the position and the condition of the pole with consequent notification of maintenance personnel. Galvanic corrosion protection system Battery charger management: in the stand alone systems with photovoltaic panels the logic module manages the recharging of the batteries and commands the conditioning and protection systems of both the batteries and the panels. Traffic detection: a traffic sensor on the roadway lamp detects hourly traffic near the unit and adapts the illumination based upon the average. Remote monitoring and management: the roadway lamps make up a de facto ultra low powered radio connection network able to communicate and transmit from one to the other all of the data revealed by the sensors aboard. This data is then communicated to a Master station from which, by way of the WEB, it is possible to monitor the entire network. Still by way of the WEB it is possible to issue further or extraordinary conditions. Thermal Protection: operational temperatures of the LEDs are monitored. In case of overheating, the logic board reduces the luminosity safeguarding the integrity of the street lamp. Furthermore, an immediate notification of the fault encountered is sent to maintenance personnel with an indication of the individual pole involved. This protection is extended to the eventual accessories such as photovoltaic panels and batteries as well. 3

Advantages of the Lighting-Mode technology The advantages of LED technology devices with respect to traditional discharge lamps (HPSP, MH) are summarised below. ENERGY SAVINGS 80% compared to sodium lamps and more than 30% compared to the best LED systems. Lighting efficiency at 150 lm/w. The only roadway lighting fixture to use Lighting Mode LEDs, which represent the product with the highest lighting efficiency level currently available on the market. With the same lighting values, this LED technology offers an energy savings of up to 80% with respect to traditional fixtures. LED lights are directional by design and emit a beam of light with an angle of less than 180. Traditional lamps, on the other hand, are omnidirectional and diffuse light in every direction. Even when equipped with parabolic reflectors for recovering posterior luminous flux, the final lighting efficiency of traditional fixtures is only 50% of that which is emitted. Adjustment of the luminous flux. The current laws require that a light beam s intensity be gauged according to both the type of roadway in question as well as the relative traffic intensity. In contrast to traditional technologies which only allow for the luminous flux to be adjusted based on the time of day (by means of an additional device), Lighting Mode Lamps are equipped with infrared/microwave traffic sensors that verify the actual number of vehicles in transit in real time and adapt their luminosity, in compliance with the relative standards, to the actual requirements. One of the peculiarities of LED lights is that when the percentage of lighting emissions is reduced, there is a corresponding reduction in consumption by an even grater percentage. Therefore, during the phases in which a reduced luminous flux is applied, the actual energy consumption is also considerably reduced. Furthermore, the streetlamps are also equipped with micro-processors with Bluetooth connections, which optimise consumption and communicate any eventual operating malfunctions to a remote station. This allows for ideal operating conditions to be restored in incredibly brief time frames. Bluetooth device The integrated PFC device avoids the increased rates applied by the electrical utility company due to reactive power consumption, which can often be considerable in street lighting systems. ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT Each street lamp provides for a reduction in CO2 emissions of about 150 Kg per year (*). Zero environmental impact (absence of toxic/hazardous substances within the components, such as gasses/mercury or lead vapours, etc.) LED directional light emissions reduce light pollution to a minimum and can be equipped with appropriate optics in order to uniformly diffuse the light beam onto the roadway alone. Absence of thermal and ultraviolet radiation emissions: no mutagenic damage to either people or to the colouration of the illuminated artworks or monuments. What s more, due to the absence of such emissions, LED diodes will not attract insects. Each street lamp provides for a reduction in CO2 emissions of about 150 Kg per year (*). Spectral diagram of comparison Traffic sensor 4

The CityNet communications system has extremely low power consumption (in the order of mw) and utilises the transmission band for no more than 2 seconds every hour, which is equal to approximately 1% of the pollution caused by the average mobile phone. (*) Calculation carried out by comparing a 250 W SAP lamp with a 70 W Light Mode lamp SAFETY In contrast to traditional street lamps which are powered by 220 V AC power line, Lighting Mode Lamps are powered with low DC operating voltage for maximum electrical safety. These low operating voltages prevent dust from being attracted to the lighting surfaces as a result of electrostatic attraction, a phenomenon which occurs quite frequently in discharge lamps. What s more, the absence of infrared (IR) and ultraviolet (UV) radiation, as well as the low operating temperatures, minimise the yellowing effect and the visible aging of the mechanical parts and optics. In the event of blackouts, the system can be immediately restored (100 nanoseconds) since, contrary to discharge lamps, LEDs do not require lengthy reactivation times. The flexibility of Lighting Mode streetlamps allows for them to be used even in the most difficult climactic conditions, including environments with temperatures ranging between -30 C and +40 C and humidity levels varying between 10% - 90%. LIGHT QUALITY The light emitted by sodium lamps is yellow and does not correspond to the peak sensitivity of the human eye: colours are therefore not reproduced faithfully and additional lighting is required in order to guarantee safe levels of visibility. Colour Rendering Index (CRI) Ra > 75: this value is an index of the quality of light that makes the colours of objects visible to the human eye (in high pressure sodium lamps, the light tends to be monochromatic and this value is typically Ra = 22-50). The same device that monitors the unit s functionality also verifies the presence of unforeseen voltage upon the device and the support pole (anti-electrocution device). In the event that such voltage should be detected, the power supply of the entire line will be interrupted, thereby eliminating the risk of electrical accidents, which, unfortunately, are far too often heard about in the news. The system will also immediately notify maintenance technicians of such events. The CityNet network, the true heart of the system, is capable of transmitting images from video cameras on the WEB system together with Google Maps road maps. Tradizionale SAP LED 5

Lighting Mode street lamps, on the other hand, emit white light, which allows for safe levels of lighting to be achieved for drivers on the roadway (reducing reaction times to unforeseen events), with less energy consumption. White light better penetrates fog, thereby rendering vehicles more visible. What s more, LEDs even increase the quality of the images captured by surveillance video cameras. The idea of using LED technology in street lighting also derives from the latest scientific research regarding perception. Studies on visibility with white light are based upon the fact that, depending on the lighting conditions available, we either use or don t use all of our eyes perception apparatus. The results indicate that lighting sources which are mainly in the blue or green spectrum, like LEDs, are preferable, even without requiring elevated luminance values. High pressure sodium lamps have light emissions which are largely centred within the red spectrum, far outside the peak sensitivity of the human eye. For this reason, the lighting power of sodium lamps must be increased by about 50% in order to guarantee proper vision. using computerised 3D modelling techniques capable of forecasting the element s behaviour with maximum precision. Lighting Mode refractors are made of Ultraviolet stabilised HID acrylic, with production processes that have been consolidated over the years and eliminate the risks of yellowing and/or reductions in lens transparency. In effect, two optical elements are employed, whose uses are conditioned by the type of area to be illuminated: the basic version, where the area to be lit consists in a significantly elongated rectangle, is used to illuminate long tracts of roadway, while the Q version, where the area to be lit consists in an only slightly elongated rectangle, is used to illuminate squares and roundabouts. The colour rendering index (Ra) indicates the degree to which colours are faithfully reproduced on a scale from 1 to 100. Sodium vapour lamps typically have values ranging between 20-30, while mercury vapour lamps tend to have values closer to 65. LED lamps, on the other hand, offer values of up to 80. In order to offer technical designers adequate design possibilities with maximum efficiency, the Lighting Mode system has been designed based on the principles of modularity and optics flexibility: - Modularity (the vast assortment ranges from 2,000 lumen up to 20,000 lumen, with increments of 1300 lm); - Optics flexibility; the availability of various optical elements allows for the luminous flux to be adapted to its specific purpose. Beam flux control The low operating temperatures allow for the use of sophisticated optical elements in plastic materials. The Case Lens which, once mounted, houses the LED plate and the pilot driver for the LEDs themselves, is equipped with a lens for each individual LED that serves to deviate the light and distribute it uniformly upon a rectangular surface. The lighting ratio between the minimum and average values is of about 0.7, which is significantly higher than the minimum legal limit of 0.4 (UNI attachment C). These optics are designed WORKING LIFE LED systems have an estimated working life of approximately 50,000 hours (10-12 years at 12 hours per day), as opposed to the 14,000 hours offered by sodium vapour lamps (just over 3 years at 12 hours per day), and the 9,000 hours offered by mercury vapour lamps (10-14 months at 12 hours per day). According to the estimates, after 50,000 hours the luminosity of LED systems will decrease by about 70% with respect to their initial values, a reduction which can be considered as the end of the LEDs operating life. The already long life of the LEDs (in the order of 100,000 hours) utilised in Light Mode street lamps is further increased through the use of a tested and stable system of electronics, derived from military use, that limits all of the stresses to which the LED device may be subjected. If properly utilised, they are capable of lasting up to 6

five times longer than metal halide lamps, thereby reducing their environmental impact. Their working life is estimated at: 50,000-90,000 hours. The Illuminating Engineering Society (IES) recommends for a LED device to be considered operational until its lumen emissions capacity has deteriorated by 30%. The estimate of 50,000 hours does not correspond exactly to the lamp s estimated working life. A LED is to be considered active as long as its lumen emissions have not decreased by more than 30%. Therefore, once the 50,000 working hours have been reached, the LED can still be considered operational even if its lumen emissions may be slightly decreased. MAINTENANCE The maintenance costs for LED lighting devices are estimated at about a tenth of those associated with the sodium lamp lighting systems currently in use. Malfunction Notifications An intelligent electronic device, which is integrated into the lighting body, monitors the unit s proper functionality and, in the event of malfunction, provides for any necessary adjustments or the deactivation of the street light itself. What s more, the device will directly signal the position and the type of malfunction encountered by sending an SMS or message to the maintenance technician, thus ensuring the immediate and targeted restoration or proper functionality. COSTS LED systems have higher initial costs, from twice to three times those of traditional lighting systems. Considering, however, their increased working life, the relative energy savings and the near absence of maintenance costs, LED systems are capable of offering an overall net savings of 50% to 80%. To summarise, the light quality, projection efficacy and light pollution provided by traditional lighting systems are clearly inferior to those which LED lighting systems are capable of offering. A single product for every situation. The street lamp has a Modular structure which, through the assembly of one or more Basic Modules, allows for street lamps of various powers levels to be obtained. The Basic Module is a sturdy structure in extruded aluminium that, aside from its structural functions, has also been designed to act as a heatsink. The piloting Driver, the LEDs and the relative optics are all assembled upon this structure. In this configuration, the module guarantees a protection rating of IP65. MANAGEMENT Energy consumption monitoring The CityNet network, which includes a Bluetooth-type data transmission system, with extremely low power consumption and negligible levels of electromagnetic pollution, monitors the entire system s power consumption in real time. This allows for the system s functionality to be verified on a global or sectorial scale, with the possibility of monitoring even the individual street lamps themselves if necessary. Adjustment of the luminous flux. In compliance with the current regulations, the lighting intensity is regulated based on actual traffic intensity, which is measured by sensors installed on the street lamps themselves.
