Session 1 Evaluer le paysage en zone de marais : utilisation de la cartographie des réseaux écologiques et de l évaluation des habitats pour définir la qualité des zones humides à l échelle du paysage Evaluating the Wetland Landscape: Using ecological network mapping and habitat assessment to evaluate the quality of wetlands at a landscape scale Somerset Wildlife Trust - Eleanor Higginson

The Somerset Levels

The Somerset Levels

The importance of looking at the landscape Sites are connected in the landscape Wildlife uses more than one site We can see the bigger picture Predicting and coping with change

Representing Connections in the Landscape Model Species Habitat area requirements Dispersal distance Ideal Habitat Select areas of ideal habitat Land Cover Map Continuous map of the landscape Assign a value to how easily the model species can move through each habitat. Watts et al (2010)

Evaluating Ecological Networks Lawton et al (2010), Humphrey et al (2013)

Coherence and Resilience Coherence is the degree of connectedness that exists within a network. Moseley et al (2015) Size of network Proportion of habitat within the network Connectivity between habitat patches Good relationship between size and number of habitat patches within the network

Coherence and Resilience Resilience is the ability of the network to deal with disturbance events. Size of habitat patches Shape of habitat patches Surrounding land use Moseley et al (2015)

Monitoring Change in the Landscape robust, sustainable monitoring methods that provide on going data about the health of wetland ecosystems, communities and the rural economy and will chart changes in land-use, biodiversity and landscape connectivity. A monitoring framework should Use existing data sources and monitoring networks Be locally adaptable Follow examples of best practice

Monitoring Manual Indicator Number of pairs of breeding waders Theme Biodiversity Sub-theme(s) Species Rationale Special Management is undertaken on the Somerset Levels and other European wetlands to encourage populations of breeding waders. Population trends of breeding waders should be monitored to assist with the evaluation of the efficacy of this management. Method The RSPB have devised a method of monitoring displaying breeding wading birds. This method is outlined in The Wet Grassland Guide. Measure of Success A transect should be walked three times during the breeding season in good weather conditions within 3 hours of dawn or dusk. The species, number, behaviour and position of displaying waders should be mapped as well as the extent of any wet features and grazing animals. Repeated annual monitoring should show an increasing population trend.
