1 BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN NURSING DEGREE PROGRAM (RN TO BSN) INFORMATION SESSION ATTENDANCE Full-time and part-time options available. Oct. 1 deadline to begin classes in January. May 1 deadline to begin classes in August. Welcome to the Online Information Session for the College of Central Florida Bachelor of Science in Nursing (RN to BSN) degree program. This information is intended for those interested in becoming RN to BSN nurses through the CF program. We hope you find this information clear and helpful. At the end of this online program you will have an opportunity to give us input or ask questions about this session. Please let us know how we can improve the information to make it more beneficial to our future students. This program will allow associate degree registered nurses to advance their education, facilitate entry into graduate nursing programs, and support meeting the Institute for Medicine s call for 80 percent of nursing staffs to be BSN prepared by At the graduate level, nurses will prepare for advanced clinical positions and for nursing faculty positions, meeting additional needs for nurses in primary care and as nursing program faculty educating new nurses. The RN to BSN program is a limited access program. Students must submit a separate application for this program. See subsequent section. CF's service district is Marion, Citrus and Levy counties. In-district residents will be accepted into the RN to BSN program before any consideration can be given to out-of-district applicants. Falsification of residency information on the RN to BSN application will result in withdrawal from the application pool. The RN to BSN program is 120 credit hours and leads to a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. The College of Central Florida is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) Commission on Colleges. The College of Central Florida s RN-BSN program is approved by the Florida Board of Nursing and has been granted candidacy status for accreditation by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN, formerly NLNAC), 4 Peachtree Road NE, Suite 80, Atlanta, GA 026, Students must attain a grade of C or better in all courses, non-nursing and nursing, that are a part of the program. Note: In nursing courses (those with NUR prefix) a C grade is minimally a 7 percent. 2 RN to BSN Requirements Criteria for Application Be admitted to CF in good standing. 2.0 college GPA. 2. GPA or higher in general education and lower division courses specific to the nursing programs as well as the courses with the NUR prefix. All general education and lower division course requirements must be completed, or currently enrolled in, to have conditional acceptance. Applications can be submitted during the application period if currently enrolled in general education or lower division courses, but all must be completed with a grade of C or higher in order to have final acceptance to the program. Submit RN to BSN program application with a copy of an active unencumbered Florida RN license. Recent ADN graduates must attain an active, unencumbered Florida RN license prior to second semester of upper division nursing courses. CF service area: Marion, Citrus and Levy county applicants will have priority seating. General Education and Lower Division Courses Required Note: A minimum 2. GPA must be achieved in order to enter the program. The courses assessed for this GPA include general education and lower division courses specific to the nursing programs as well as the courses with the NUR prefix. Potential students must have completed an Associate Degree in Nursing, general education and lower division courses prior to starting the RN to BSN program. Any courses not completed at the time of application must be successfully completed before the first day of RN to BSN classes. Applicants must meet with one of the Health Sciences academic advisors (by appointment only; call , ext. 1274) prior to submitting program application. The Health Sciences academic advisor will provide the student with a form that must be attached to the RN to BSN application. The nursing courses are offered over four semesters (including summer, if desired). The nursing courses during each of the four semesters total 8-11 credit hours per semester (see schedule below). Part-Time: Students may be admitted to the part-time option in both January (spring semester) and August (fall semester). The nursing courses are offered over three years (seven semesters, including summers). The nursing courses during each of the seven semesters total -7 credit hours per semester (see schedule below). Course Modality: The RN to BSN program is offered in hybrid sessions. A hybrid modality consists of a minimum 20 percent face-to-face interaction and a maximum of 80 percent online interaction. employment. 6 Financial Aid The RN to BSN program qualifies for Financial Aid. Consult CF Office of Financial Aid to assist with funding. Scholarships For more information about scholarships, visit Application Process CF has an open door policy; however, the nursing program is limited access. This means you must apply separately to the RN to BSN program. Applying to College of Central Florida and to the RN to BSN program are two separate processes. Requirements for application to the RN to BSN program: 1. College of Central Florida Application All applicants to the RN to BSN program must submit the College of Central Florida application and be accepted to CF as a student in good standing prior to applying to the Nursing Program. This process is completely online; see requirements at program code B20. Bachelor application fee is $0. This applies to new CF applicants and previous CF students who have not applied for a bachelor program. Acceptance to the college does not guarantee acceptance to the nursing program, a separate application must be submitted to the nursing program. 2. Information Session All applicants for the RN to BSN program MUST complete this RN to BSN Online Information Session prior to submitting an application to the program. Upon completion of this Online Information Session, follow the instruction to submit verification.. Academic Requirements A minimum 2. GPA must be achieved in order to enter the program. The courses assessed for this GPA include general education and lower division courses specific to the nursing programs as well as the courses with the NUR prefix. An all-college-level GPA must be 2.00 or higher. Admission will be based on GPA of general education and lower division courses specific to the nursing programs as well as the courses with the NUR prefix. 4. General Education and Lower Division Course Requirements Applicants must have completed or be currently enrolled in all general education and lower division courses prior to starting the upper division nursing courses with a minimum 2. GPA in those courses. A grade of C or higher is required for all general education and lower division courses for admission to the RN to BSN program. Admission will be rescinded for those not meeting this criterion.. Transfer Students Will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis. 6. RN to BSN Application Application to the RN to BSN program must be completed and submitted with documentation required (refer to checklist on page 9). 7 7. RN License Applicants must submit an active, unencumbered Florida RN license. Recent ADN graduates must attain an active, unencumbered Florida RN license prior to second semester of upper division nursing courses. 8. Applicant Residence College of Central Florida s service area is Marion, Citrus, and Levy Counties. In-district residents will be accepted into the RN to BSN program before any consideration can be given to out-of-district applicants. Falsification of residency information on the RN to BSN application will result in withdrawal from the applicant pool or program. EXCEPTION: Applicants living in a neighboring county, but having completed courses at CF may petition the Admission Committee for an exception to the residency criterion. Submit a letter of petition with your application. Application Submission Periods Applications for the RN to BSN program will be accepted in the Nursing Simulation Lab Office, Ocala Campus, Building 16, Room 101. Application Deadlines for Full- and Part-time Options Oct. 1 deadline to begin classes in January. May 1 deadline to begin classes in August. Hours for the Nursing Simulation Lab Office, Building 16, Room 101 CF regular business hours are 8 a.m. to 4:0 p.m., Monday-Friday. CF summer hours are 7:0 a.m. to :0 p.m., Monday-Thursday, closed on Friday. All applications submitted during these application periods will be given equal consideration. Date and time of application submission are NOT criteria for acceptance in the program. Selection of Candidates The selection process will be completed by an admission committee. Each application will be reviewed to ensure that the applicant meets minimum admission criteria and again to calculate GPA for admission. Applicants who meet minimum criteria will have a GPA calculated and will be ranked in order of GPA (highest to lowest). Applicants with the highest GPA will be selected for the class until the class is full. Notification of Applicants All applicants will be notified by mail of their application status within four weeks of the application deadline. Notify the Nursing division via at RN2BSN@cf.edu of any change of address, telephone number or address. Once accepted into the RN to BSN program These steps are required of students who receive a letter of matriculation into the RN to BSN program: 1. Acknowledgment of Acceptance Form Return this form indicating whether you accept or decline admission to the program to the Nursing Simulation Lab Office, Ocala Campus, Building 16, Room 101 by the date specified in the conditional acceptance letter. employment. 8 2. Complete a Criminal Background Check CF Health Sciences Division must initiate background checks on its students. This check should be conducted after receiving an acceptance letter. The fingerprinting must be completed at CF and instructions for initiating the check will be included in the acceptance letter. The receipt given by CF after the Background Check is completed must be submitted to the Nursing Simulation Lab Office by the date indicated in the conditional acceptance letter. Note: Arrest/Conviction Any applicant to the RN to BSN program who has been arrested or convicted of any offense other than a minor traffic violation should refer to the Florida Statutes, Chapter 46 and Chapter 464 regarding licensure as a registered nurse. Individuals with a criminal history may not be eligible for admission to Health Sciences programs.. Health Forms Students must be physically and emotionally healthy to administer safe nursing care. Physical examination forms are valid for ONE YEAR from the date of the health care provider's signature. The physical examination form may be completed by an advanced registered nurse practitioner, physician's assistant or licensed physician (MD or DO). Note: The physical examination form may not be signed by a chiropractic physician. Health forms will be enclosed with the acceptance letter. All items required on the health forms and CPR certification must remain current while in the RN to BSN program. Physical Abilities Applicants must have sufficient, gross and fine motor skills to: Move from room to room and walk in hallways Maneuver in small spaces Lift patients as needed (a minimum of 12 lbs. for EMS programs and a minimum of 0 lbs. for all other health sciences programs Grip, reach above shoulder level, bend at the knee, squat, stoop and crawl Sit or stand for prolonged periods of time Perform CPR Perform safe and effective care Provide healthcare intervention Manipulate small objects dexterously Applicants must have sufficient tactile, auditory and visual abilities to: Perform physical assessment necessary in healthcare Auscultate blood pressure, heart and bowel sounds Hear alarms and call bells on units Converse with patients and staff on phone and in person Intellectual abilities Critical thinking sufficient for clinical judgment Critical thinking sufficient for clinical judgment Prioritize and make rapid decisions under pressure Emotional abilities Cope with a high level of stress Cope with anger, fear, hostility or confrontation in a calm manner Concentrate Be flexible and self-directed Demonstrate a high degree of patience Work with families/individuals stressed by the condition of patient Work with other healthcare providers in stressful situations in a professional manner Interpersonal abilities Communicate clearly and correctly in writing and verbally Abilities sufficient to interact with individuals, families and groups from a variety of social, emotional, cultural and intellectual backgrounds employment. 9 4. CPR Certification Students must have a current Basic Life Support for Health Care Providers Certification. The program accepts only the American Heart Association Basic Life Support for the Health Care Provider card, the American Red Cross Professional Rescuer (two-person rescue, adult, infant/child) or the American Safety and Health Institute (ASHI) CPR Pro card. Note: Liability Insurance All nursing students are required to carry professional liability insurance. The insurance carrier is retained by the college. Payment for this coverage will be included in a student s tuition and fees. This insurance is ONLY in effect for students while in the program as part of a CF Health Sciences program and does NOT cover any outside employment activities. RN to BSN Applicant Check List It is the applicant s responsibility to be sure admission requirements are met according to the current online information session. No notices will be sent. The following is the applicant check list: Completed general admission requirements to College of Central Florida. Major code B20 to designate program of study. Available at Completed the RN to BSN application (this is separate from the CF admission application). Included on the application, date the mandatory online RN to BSN program Information Session was completed. Attach to the application, a copy of your active, unencumbered Florida RN license, or, date your NCLEX-RN is scheduled. (An active, unencumbered Florida RN license must be attained prior to starting second semester of upper division nursing courses.) Met with a Health Sciences academic advisor and have attached, from this appointment, the Advising Record and Degree Audit. Made copies of your application and attachments for your records. Reminder RN to BSN applications are only accepted at the Nursing Simulation Lab Office, Ocala Campus, Building 16, Room 101, by the application deadline. Late applications will be considered for the next available admission cycle. Submit all required documentation with application. Your application will be processed only when all the above requirements are met. If accepted to the RN to BSN program the following must be completed: Submit the Acknowledgment of Acceptance form to the Nursing Simulation Lab Office by the date indicated in the conditional acceptance letter. Complete a Criminal Background Check, submit receipt to the Nursing Simulation Lab Office by the date indicated in the conditional acceptance letter. Submit completed physical examination form and immunization record by the date indicated in the conditional acceptance letter.
