7 Four use cases Captioning and translation of subtitles for TV programs This use case will demonstrate that using ASR and MT technology it will be possible to reduce the costs for producing subtitles for media content in many languages. Thus it will be possible to subtitle and translate more media content and make it available to Europe s citizens Simultaneous translation of academic lectures This use case will demonstrate how speech translation technologies can be applied in situations in which the use of human simultaneous translators would be too expensive, thus making university lectures available to a much wider audience, e.g. international students Speech translation services for the European Parliament This use case will demonstrate that even in scenarios in which human translators are available, speech translation technology can provide help and improve the quality of the translations obtained Cross border applications (medical assistance abroad / webinars) This use case is dedicated to travelers who are put through with local practitioners, doctors or pharmacists for assistance, and/or to companies to present their products and services to a multilingual audience, thus having a maximum market impact

8 Four major objectives Performance research in the areas of robustness, rapid adaptation in speech and translation, semantic modeling, content summarization Language portability include core European languages, under-resourced European languages, and reach out to languages of the BRIC economies Reduction of dependency on data making speech and MT components adaptive and language and style independent Rapid technology transition and market insertion The systems will be applied to real-world data and we will carry out pilot experiments around four business opportunities
