If commitment meets enthusiasm, persistence and, last but not least, talent, it can result in exceptional accomplishments. In Medias Brass one and a half year into its existence has been well placed in four noted international competition and their concerts are received with grand applause and ovation all over the world. Anthony Plog American conductor, composer and trumpet player had the following to say about the ensemble: Hard and dedicated work is the answer to doing anything of excellence, and it is obvious that your group does just that. The quintet was formed in January Its members got their degree at the Franz Liszt Academy of Music. In August 2010 their first joint project was the 6. Jeju International Brass Competition, organized in South-Korea, where they had great success: in addition to coming first in the chamber music category they won every solo category they entered despite the fact that almost three hundred participants took place in the competition from all over the world. In the subsequent nine months In Medias Brass won the following international prizes: November 2010: International Chamber Music Competition for Brass Ensembles (Passau, Germany), first place April 2011: Svirel International Competition for Soloists and Chamber Music Groups (Stanjel, Slovenia), first place and special prize May 2011: International Chamber Music Competition, (Osaka, Japan), second place They performed the opening concert at the Geneva Brass Festival in Their February 3rd concert was transmitted by the Hungarian State Radio. Since December 2010 they are supported by the German B&S musical instrument factory, and since the early summer 2011 they are supported by the Hungarian Corpus Music Shop too. Their concerts, due to their artistic and technical aptness are simultaneously characterized by virtuosity and intimacy. The repertoire of In Medias Brass ranges from pieces dating from the Renaissance period to arrangements and works written for brass quintets to the most recent contemporary pieces and is constantly expanding. They also make a special point of performing works written especially for them by young, talented composers. In addition, they gladly play pop music pieces, among which everybody can find their favourite whether it be soundtrack from a film, ragtime or Latin jazz. They find it important that each and every one of their concerts is worthwhile and that the audience not only realize the potential brass musical instruments have but also undergo a wonderful musical experience.
Richárd Kresz started to learn the trumpet in his native Balatonföldvár at the age of seven in the Ránki György Music School. His first teachers were Miklós Ekkert and Attila Budai, then in 1998 he was admitted to the Arts Specialized Secondary School in Pécs where he pursued his studies as the student of Zsolt Horváth. He graduated from the Franz Liszt Academy of Music in Zoltán Szűcs s class and got his Master of Music and Master of Arts in Teaching degree in In the course of his studies he won several national and international prizes both in solo and chamber music category: in 1999 he won the trumpet competition of the Hungarian music secondary schools, and in 2008 he got 2 nd prize on the National Trumpet Competition. In 2005 he won the National Brass Chamber Music Competition with the Espressivo Quintet, than in 2007 he gained dual success at an International Chamber Music Competition in Italy, where he got first prize in the brass quintet and brass ensemble category too they won this latter category with the Concerto Brasso, which was founded in 2005 by his friends. He participated in the master class of such noted trumpet players as Reinhold Friedrich, Niclas Eklund, Max Sommerhalder and Bo Nilsson. During the years on the university he acquired popular music experiences as the trumpet player of Hungarian Musical Band, and in 2005 he was the first trumpet player of the Kodály-Bartók International Youth Orchestra. From September 2010 he is the teacher of the Vujicsics Tihamér Music School in Szentendre. In addition, he plays in well-known symphony orchestras (Danubia Symphony Orchestra of Óbuda, Dohnányi Symphony Orchestra of Budafok, Concerto Budapest, UMZE Chamber Orchestra, MÁV Symphony Orchestra, and Hungarian State Opera). He has worked with conductors such as Ádám Fischer, Gábor Takács-Nagy, Girorgio Croci, András Keller, Ádám Medveczky, Rico Saccani, Tamás Vásáry, Slomo Mintz, Jurij Simonov, Domonkos Héja, Yoav Talmi, Gergely Vajda, János Kovács and Zsolt Hamar. Is a founding member of In Medias Brass. Antal Endre Nagy started to play the trumpet in the Ádám Jenő Music School in Lenti. He went on to study as a student of Attila Simon at the Béla Bartók Secondary Vocational School of Music in Budapest. From 2001 he studied at the Franz Liszt Academy of Music first in the class of Frigyes Varasdy and then Tamás Velenczei, who is the solo trumpet player of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra. In the course of his studies he took part in numerous master classes (in those of Niklas Eklund, Bo Nilsson, Marcus Stockhausen) and won international first prizes both in solo and chamber music category. He won first prize and special prize at the Klassik-Festival Ruhr International Trumpet Competition in Germany in 2004 and gave several concerts as soloist in different cities of Germany in He played as a soloist at the concert of Philharmonia Hungarica in Marl and has also played as a soloist accompanied by the Budapest Strings. He has been a member of the Dohnányi Symphony Orchestra of Budafok as a first trumpet player since 2002 and has also played at the concerts of other famous orchestras such as the Budapest Festival Orchestra, Hungarian State Radio Orchestra, Concerto Budapest and Solti Chamber Orchestra. In recent years he has worked with conductors such as Iván Fischer, Ádám Fischer, Rico Saccani, Roberto Patemostro, Slomo Mintz, Zoltán Kocsis and Michael Stern. Is a founding member of the ensemble.
János Benyus started to play the french horn in the Tóth Aladár Music School then learnt at the Bartók Béla Secondary Vocational School of Music in Budapest (teacher: Tibor Beleznay). He pursued his studies at the Franz Liszt Academy of Music in the class of Ádám Friedrich and at the same time took part in international master classes led by the likes of Peter Damm, Timothy Jones and Ab Koster. He has a spectacular career as a soloist too. He is the winner of four international french horn competitions: he proved to be the best in Chieri (2007), as well as in Sannicandro di Bari (2008) and in Jeju, South Korea (2010). In 2011 he won the Brno International Brass Competition in horn category and was awarded the grand prize of the competition. Thus it is not surprising that he often plays accompanied by Hungarian symphony orchestras (MÁV Symphony Orchestra, Sinfonica Hungarica, Symphony Orchestra of Esztergom, Budapest Chamber Symphony, the Symphony Orchestra of Franz Liszt Academy, Chain Bridge Chamber Orchestra, Chamber Orchestra of Érd). Besides, several composers have dedicated their pieces to him. He is the principal horn player of the MÁV Symphony Orchestra since 2002 and first horn player of the Dohnányi Symphony Orchestra of Budafok since In addition, he often plays in the Hungarian State Opera, in the Hungarian State Radio Orchestra, in Concerto Budapest and the Danubia Symphony Orchestra of Óbuda as well as in the Franz Liszt Chamber Orchestra, Budapest Chamber Symphony, UMZE Chamber Orchestra and in the Budapest Strings. He has had the opportunity to work with conductors such as Ricardo Muti, Jurij Simonov, Zoltán Kocsis, Gábor Takács-Nagy, Ádám Fischer, Gergely Kesselyák, Rodrigo de Carvalho and Irwin Hoffmann. He has played in numerous succesful chamber groups: he took third place in the Chamber Music Competition for Brass Ensembles in Passau with the Extreme Trombone Quartet in 2004 and won in 2007 at an International Chamber Music Competition in Italy with Concerto Brasso. He has been a member of the Four Bones trombone quartet and the Solti Brass Orchestra, which (together with him) was awarded the Artisjus Prize in He won the Brno International Brass Competition in trombone category and was awarded the grand prize of the competition. In the course of his career he has worked with conductors such as Ádám Fischer, Gábor Takács-Nagy, András Keller, Ádám Medveczky, Jurij Simonov, Domonkos Héja, János Kovács, Zoltán Kocsis, Irwin Hoffmann, Gergely Kesselyák and Rodrigo de Carvalho. Is a founding member of In Medias Brass.
József Bazsinka Jr. was born to a musician family; his mother is a cello player, while his father, who has been awarded the Liszt prize, is a well known tuba player. Thus József was exposed to music from an early age. He began to play the tuba at the age of twelve. His first teacher was his father, József Bazsinka (Sr.) up until 2005 when he was admitted to the Franz Liszt Academy of Music. There he attended László Szabó s class and also spent one semester as an Erasmus student at the Musical College Hannover, as the student of Jens Björn-Larsen. In the meantime he met many famous tuba players such as Walter Hilgers, Oystein Baadsvik, Sergio Carolino and Roland Szentpáli in master classes that proved to be highly fruitful. At the moment he is on a scholarship in the doctorate programme of the Franz Liszt Academy of Music as a DLA student. In addition to his studies and playing chamber music he is active as a soloist too: he performed at the Tuba and Euphonium Conference in Denver (USA) in 2006, was placed first at the International Brass Competition in Brno in 2007, also came first at the National Balog-Zilcz Tuba Competition in 2008 and took first place at the 6. Jeju International Brass Competition in tuba category in South Korea. He has played regularly with the Austrian contemporary music ensemble Klangforum Wien since 2005, with whom he has had concerts in Germany, France, Austria, Serbia, Portugal and the United States, led by conductors such as Sylvain Cambreling, Enno Poppe, Johannes Kalitzke and Emilio Pomárico. Is a founding member of In Medias Brass.
1. Painting atmospheres standard program In this diverse programme we would like to invoke different moods with the aid of compositions which were written both in far-ranging places and times, completing each other perfectly nonetheless. The concert provides a fascinating and colorful panorama including works by the great masters of the Baroque to Bernstein and from Hungarian neorenaissance to American contemporary music. 2. Church Music The history of music owes lots of beautiful pieces to the Church. This program comprises a selection of these, in which the most beautiful musical confessions of different musical periods from the Renaissance to the Baroque to Romanticism can be heard. 3. Soloists of the ensemble The members of In Medias Brass are fantastic soloists on their own right as it has been proved at numerous international competitions and in concert halls. This program presents all of them as chamber music players and soloists alike; chamber and solo pieces are played alternately, the latters are accompanied by the rest of the ensemble. An interesting and enjoyable journey on the border between chamber and solo music with the help of such popular pieces as the Carnival of Venice or Figaro s aria in Rossini s The Barber of Seville. 4. Hungarian Pictures This program is a real Hungaricum. In the first part of the concert arrangements from the music of the most important Hungarian composers such as Ferenc (Franz) Liszt, Béla Bartók and Zoltán Kodály can be heard, while in the second part pieces by Hungarian contemporary composers (Frigyes Hidas, György Orbán, Tímea Dragony, Rezső Ott, László Dubrovay) are performed. Some of the latter pieces were inspired by In Medias Brass.
5. Passion Concert This program consists fundamentally of romantic works from arrangements of parts of well-known operas to gems written for quintets, by composers such as Verdi, Délibes and Mascagni but also Beethoven, Brahms and Fauré. 6. The joy of brass There are compositions in the broadly interpreted history of music which, miraculously, touch every soul, tunes of which are easily accessible thus these musical works have gained huge popularity. At the concert some of these pieces are played, arranged to the quintet format, from compositions written by the great Baroque masters to ones in the realm of jazz and film scores. 7. The art of brass We find it important that the best pieces written for brass quintets are not only known by professionals but also by the wider audience, as we believe that these are valuable, interesting and enjoyable works. In this program there are no arrangements, only pieces written originally for the quintet format, from the early Romanticism to our day, by French, Russian, English, Polish, American and Hungarian composers. 8. Candle light concert With this scheme our aim is to rive the audience away from their everyday reality and give them such an intimate experience which we undergo only in the special, extraordinary moments of life. Our program is a compilation of the most beautiful compositions in the history of music, which we play in a special moodlighting, in a candlelit setting. Pieces in the programme are well-known but inspired works which take their inspiration from the experience of faith, pain or love. 9. Goldberg variations In this concert we play the Goldberg Variations by Johann Sebastian Bach in extracts. In between the movements poems and passages from the Bible are read out.
