4 4 Original Plan after B.Tech. Great job found after graduating from McMaster Planned on taking technical exams for P.Eng. Applied for Masters at various universities Decided a Masters could complement the B.Tech.

5 Job Opportunities with Various Degrees 5 B.Tech - Manufacturing M.Eng Focuses on Manufacturing Emphasis on Hands-on Engineering Focuses on a specific Field in industry E.g. broad basis of automation (robotics, automation, data collection) M.E.Sc. (M.A.Sc.) PhD Focuses on a specific field in research E.g. vision guided Robotics Focuses on new technology/ processes within a specific field

8 8 Application Process for Masters When applying for a Masters you will need to provide the following: 1) B.Tech. transcripts (GPA between is usually required) 2) Detailed Curriculum Vitae 3) References 4) Project reports from undergraduate and/or work

10 10 Why I chose the University of Western Ontario Great reputation for postgraduate engineering Shorter time period to obtain my Masters Was offered a scholarship London Ontario is a great city Wife was offered a job at the University of Western Ontario

11 11 M.Eng. VS. M.E.Sc. (M.A.Sc.) M.Eng May take as little as 8 Months Can specialize in a field Option of course based (10 courses) Option of courses (8) and Project M.E.Sc. Usually takes 24 months You specialize in a specific technology Usually 4 courses and a major research project Preferred if aiming for a PhD

12 12 PhD after M.E.Sc. Able to transfer into a PhD program once M.E.Sc. is obtained PhD usually takes between 3-4 years PhD provides the opportunity to have your own research lab/department at a University Can possible teach at the University level PEO automatically given to a PhD holder after PPE is passed

13 13 PhD after M.Eng. Transfer from M.Eng. to PhD is much more difficult but is possible M.Eng. project must be a project that can expand into a larger research area

14 14 M.Eng. Workload Project based reports Research projects Laboratory work Presentations Sometimes there are midterms and finals Not many assignments

15 15 Specialization during Master s Studies Choose your specialization very carefully Must enjoy your specialization Masters is worthless if job doesn t correspond with specialization Fellow graduates from an M.Eng. fall victim to this

16 16 How Does B.Tech. Manufacturing Prepare you for an M.Eng. Manufacturing courses during Master s studies easy for B.Tech. graduates Kinematics and Dynamics, Heat transfer and Fluid Machinery will be a challenge Challenging courses are the ones that should be targeted

17 17 Optional Project with M.Eng. Either take eight courses and a project or ten courses Recommend taking eight courses and a project for two reasons: 1) Difficult to find ten courses that benefit you 2) Project can possibly go towards engineering report from the PEO

18 18 PEO Application and Your Degree B.Tech Manufacturing Technology Must Pass ~6 Technical exams Need to complete an engineering report M.Eng 8 courses can be used to cancel out PEO exams Project used for engineering report M.E.Sc. 4 courses can be used to cancel out PEO exams Project used for engineering report

19 19 Applying to the PEO after B.Tech. Apply to PEO after B.Tech. degree is obtained PEO will assess your education Most likely will assess you six technical exams and an engineering report

20 20 Scenario 1: Not pursuing a Masters Six technical exams Preparatory courses from EPIC ($995) PEO charges $520 for the first exam and $150 for the rest Don t fail technical exam more than once 6 technical exams will take minimum one year to write Still need to submit an engineering report Able to continue working while pursuing P.Eng.

21 21 Scenerio 2: Pursuing a M.Eng. 6 technical exams from PEO Match up M.Eng. courses with the PEO technical exams Course descriptions from PEO provided Not difficult to match up courses Master s at UWO costs approximately $7,300 (3 semesters) M.Eng. project can go towards your engineering report

22 22 Past B.Tech. Experiences With the PEO No technical exams for some M.Eng. graduates All five technical exams for some M.Eng. graduates M.E.Sc. graduates still had to write technical exams I had to write one technical exam Matching up M.Eng. Courses with technical exams work very effectively

23 23 PEO Academic Requirements Changes to B.Tech.Manufacturing Graduates Academic requirements changed twice in 2008 Final changes for B.Tech Mfg. graduates: One complementary studies exam stayed same The 2 Group A exams did not change The 2 Group B exams were changed A third group B exam was added Classified under Manufacturing Engineering rather than Mechanical Engineering

24 24 PEO Academic Requirements Changes to B.Tech. Manufacturing Graduates Manufacturing technical exams seem easier than Mechanical but no preparatory courses available Manufacturing technical exams are difficult to match with M.Eng. Courses It may be possible to apply to the PEO thru Mechanical rather than Manufacturing Engineering

27 27 Professional Practice Exam Law & Ethics If technical exams are passed, Professional Practice Exam (PPE) is written PPE is not difficult, but it can be hard to understand what you will be tested on Recommend taking the preparatory course from OSPE Two day course ($280)

28 28 Post Graduate Time Goes Toward PEO Work Experience Four years experience required Exempt 12 months working experience if a Masters is obtained Exempt all four years if a PhD is obtained

29 29 Pre-Graduation Experience - PEO 12 months work experience for pre-graduation experience can be granted Pre-graduation gained after midpoint of a bachelor s degree P.Eng. Supervisor not needed PEO granted me 12 months pre-graduation experience along with 12 months post graduate studies

30 30 PEO Required Work Experience Once PPE is passed work experience is retroactive from date of college diploma confirmation References from past and present employers Direct supervisor needed for each employer If supervisor not a P.Eng. another reference who is a P.Eng. needed

31 31 Document Engineering Work Document all engineering work for PEO After PPE is passed PEO will request an Experience Record Experience Record will organize all engineering work in five categories: 1) Application of Theory (most important) 2) Practical Experience 3) Management of Engineering 4) Communication Skills 5) Social Implications of Engineering

32 32 Closing Statements The B.Tech. program is the first step in becoming an engineer Possible future directions: Master (M.Eng., M.E.Sc.) PhD P.Eng. All B.Tech. Manufacturing graduates are capable of becoming Professional Engineers Thanks to Mike Piczak and Shirley Verhage
