McMaster University s Faculty of Engineering and Mohawk College s School of Engineering Technology have partnered to establish the Bachelor of Technology degree program in response to the needs of today s innovation-based organizations. Upon graduation, students in the 4.5 year B.Tech. program receive a Bachelor of Technology degree from McMaster University as well as an advanced diploma and business management certificate from Mohawk College. Automotive & Vehicle Technology Biotechnology Our students go beyond learning from a textbook they learn from experiential learning projects in lectures, labs, and paid industry employment. Many B.Tech. graduates discover that they want to pursue additional studies, including university level Master s and Doctoral programs in engineering or business. 3 4.5 Year Degree Choose one of three streams: Automotive & Vehicle Technology Learn about the construction, operation, design, and manufacturing of modern vehicles. Evaluate current and future automotive propulsion technologies, advanced combustion systems, hybrid powertrains, and alternative fuel vehicles. Use engineering fundamentals and stateof-the-art software to identify, formulate, analyze, and solve problems related to the machine components and assemblies used in the automotive industry. Careers: Graduates may work to develop new hybrid and green vehicle technologies; design power and control systems, engines, and bodies; perform complex analysis on mechanical components, assemblies, and systems; conduct crash tests and safety audits; or streamline production processes in manufacturing plants. Some current alumni careers include: o Management Associate, US Steel o CAD/CAM Programmer, John Crane o Design Engineer, Honda Manufacturing Process Automation Technology Develop highly tuned analytical and design skills and gain specialized knowledge in sensors, instruments, actuators, industrial networks, process control and automation, SCADA, programming, statistical process control, Internet technologies, and the integration of plant floor data with business systems. Take a multidisciplinary approach with subjects in chemical, mechanical, electrical, electronics, and computer engineering. Careers: Graduates use hardware and software to improve the efficiency of plants and labs in industries such as petrochemicals, power generation, pharmaceuticals, and primary steel. They may design control systems and assembly lines, develop and program robotics, or advise on safety policies and procedures for automated technologies. o Process Control Lead, Weyerhaeuser o Control Systems Designer, Husky Molding Systems o Manufacturing Engineer, General Motors Biotechnology Biotechnology is an interdisciplinary field merging basic science, applied science, and engineering. Study genetic engineering, cell biology, molecular biology and microbiology, analytical instrumentation, and bio processing. Learn about the latest research in immunology, virology, genomics, proteomics, and bioinformatics. Careers: Graduates can work in the biofuel, food, and pharmaceutical industries monitoring quality control and assurance of biomaterials. They may also specialize in bioinformatics, genetic and protein engineering, nanobiotechnology, and bioremediation, or apply forensic biology techniques in areas such as criminal forensics. 4 learningin3d.ca B.Tech. Combined Degree & Diploma Program Structure The program is made up of technical courses that are specialized according to your chosen stream. In addition, an eight-course management studies component is designed to develop business skills in a technology context. A five-course breadth of learning component will broaden your knowledge of economic, social, political, environmental, cultural, and ethical dimensions of work and society. These courses also focus on communication, problem solving, analytical thinking, and interpersonal skills. Finally, a twelve month co-op component is integrated throughout your studies. A four-month work term is completed in the summer after second year and an eight-month work term is completed from January to September of third year. Support and guidance is provided by Engineering Co-op and Career Services to assist students with job searching, résumé writing and interviewing skills; however, it is ultimately the responsibility of the student to satisfy the co-op requirement.
