3 What is the LIEP Program? Licensing International Engineers into the Profession (LIEP) bridging program is a new and collaborative pilot project to assist internationally educated engineers (IEEs). The LIEP project has been launched collaboratively by the University of Toronto s School of Continuing Studies (SCS) and Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering (FASE), Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO) and Bombardier Aerospace and supported by many other engineering organizations. The project is funded by the Government of Ontario. The goal of the project is to help internationally educated Civil, Electrical and Mechanical engineers living in Ontario gain licensure and employment through successful completion of a part time program of studies. To be granted a license to practice professional engineering in Ontario, applicants must meet all of the requirements as outlined in the Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO) Licensing Guide and Application for License. Upon successful completion of the academic portion of their LIEP program, participants shall be deemed to have met PEO s academic requirements for licensure.* You can visit our website for more information at Areas of Focus The program is currently designed for internationally educated professionals in the fields of: 1. Civil Engineering 2. Mechanical Engineering 3. Electrical Engineering All candidates assigned Confirmatory Examination Program (CEP) in the Civil, Electrical and Mechanical Engineering disciplines are encouraged to apply. 4 Unique Features and Benefits of LIEP Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board (CEAB) accredited program courses are offered through a flexible and convenient part time (evening/weekends) format accepted in lieu of PEO Confirmatory Examination Program Development of workplace culture and professional communication skills Need- based advanced professional communication skills in business and engineering Professional Practice Examination (PPE) preparation course, including advanced writing skills that are critical to passing license examinations Canadian workplace experience opportunities that can include an appropriate mix of mentoring, job shadowing and internship** On-boarding support offered in hybrid workshop format for up to one year during the Job-search and/or post- employment period. This may include reinforcement and enhancement of personal and workplace effectiveness (e.g. professional communication, networking, and situational problem solving etc.) * Exemption will be granted by PEO for Confirmatory Examination Program in lieu of completing corresponding technical and complementary studies courses completed in the LIEP program; individual courses taken as part of LIEP will not be accepted in-lieu-of PEO examination. Unsuccessful participants would still be able to utilize this academic preparation/course work to write the Confirmatory Examination Program (CEP). 4 Licensing International Engineers into the Profession

5 Program Components LIEP offers the required professional engineering technical courses in lieu of PEO s Confirmatory Examination Program (CEP). In addition preparation for the Professional Practice Examination (PPE) and employment success support is also offered. Each applicant will develop a customized learning plan with the LIEP program staff prior to program commencement. Technical and Complementary Studies Courses 3 technical courses in Civil, Mechanical, or Electrical Engineering 1 Complementary Studies Course Professional Practice Exam (PPE) PPE Preparation Course Employment Success Support Comparative Education Service (CES) for credentials assessment Workplace, Culture & Professional Communication Mentoring for Employment Success Work Experience (Internship/Job Shadowing)** Job search/ On-boarding Support ** The work experience/internship opportunities will be offered on the basis of their availability and match with participant needs. This component, while addressing the Canadian experience requirements, might or might not address PEOs work experience requirements for licensure. 6 Eligibility Requirements for Admission to the Program: As an applicant to the LIEP program, you must: be an internationally trained Civil, Mechanical or Electrical Engineer (Minimum Bachelor s degree) have been assigned PEO s Confirmatory Examination Program (CEP) have work experience (Minimum 3 years)** have demonstrated English language proficiency (CLBPT>=8)* be a permanent resident, citizen of Canada, or convention refugee be a resident of Ontario * For more details you may refer to the Application Checklist or contact us. LIEP Admission and Participation Process Step 1: Apply directly to the PEO for the P.Eng. License. If you are assigned a Confirmatory Examination Program (CEP), you are encouraged to apply to LIEP. Step 2: Apply to the LIEP program with the required documents. (Please review the Application Checklist). Step 3: If you are short listed, you will be invited to attend an information session and/or a selection interview. In exceptional circumstances, conditional admission may be offered. Step 4: Submit your academic credentials to the Comparative Education Service (CES) for assessment (without charge). A learning plan for you would be developed upon agreeing to the conditions of admission. Step 5: You start the LIEP program. Please note that admission into the LIEP program is a competitive process. Meeting minimum admission requirements does not guarantee admission into the program. In case of being offered conditional admission, candidates would be expected to fulfil all conditions by the communicated date prior to the commencement of the program. 7 Financial Support: The typical program duration is 12 months, based on part time studies, 2 courses per semester for 3 consecutive semesters, followed by work experience if required. In , tuition costs will be approximately $5,000. Financial support is available in the first year fully covering the tuition and textbooks cost for participants based on financial need.
