5 Activities with Baltimore City Public Schools Community Awareness City Schools Sustainability Day, partner with Enterprise Foundation, Parks & People & other groups Mayor Stephanie Rawlings Blake, Dr Alonso, Delegate Mary Washington and USGBC Center for Green Schools approximately 150 guests representing City Schools and partner organizations 20 workshops for attendees, with presentations on the range from school energy use to curriculum, nutrition and advocacy training.

9 Activities Recycling Savings and Best Practices City Schools have implemented a plan that has a 65 gallon container at each school and pick-up once a week. Andrew Cassily, Harford County Implemented comprehensive recycling program in Harford County Schools. First year savings in reduced trash removal of over $160,000 Discussion of best practices in implementing program within schools. Perception is 75% of the battle.

10 Activities Comprehensive Planning in Philadelphia School Reform Commission Created a comprehensive Master Plan to address 7,000 excess seats beginning with a right-sizing policy Master Facilities Plan Aims to achieve greater than 85% occupancy of their school buildings. 15 Why Schools? Schools nationally spend $8 billion on energy - DOE estimates at least in general, 25 percent of school energy consumption is wasted. Kids can lead in societal behavior change. Perfect venues for capacity-building; training the next generation of energy innovators.

20 Watt Meter Shows how much power an appliance is using Measures in watts Energy is billed in kilowatt hours (1000 watts) SAFETY: Remove from the wall/appliances carefully USE: Always make sure you are measuring Watts by pressing that button once and reading the unit displayed

21 Light Meter Shows how much light is in an area A light meter measures the luminance (how much a light source illuminates an area) of a given area or work surface in footcandles (A footcandle is equal to the light from one candle held one foot away.) USE: Place on the surface where you need light HALLWAY?

24 What is an Energy Audit? Provides a snapshot of how energy is currently being used in the facility. Identifies the energy and cost savings to be achieved by changing the way energy is used in a building or group of buildings. They reveal the ways a home, school, or other facility AND the people in it can save energy.

27 Creating Policy Vista Murrieta High School, Murrieta, CA Environmental Engineering students audit school Propose 10% savings plan for school year Also invited to audit district buildings and make recommendations for District energy policy Now working with city council.

28 Convincing Teachers to Conserve Penn Treaty Middle School, Philadelphia, PA Students used appliance lessons to learn about energy use at home. Class decided to also survey the school for its appliance usage. Reported their data at a faculty meeting Students published progress reports, made reminders, and saved a little over 11,000 kwh of electricity over the school year.

35 Sustainable Fellowship Program Provides partner school districts with a funded dedicated expert who collaborates with district leadership to bring sustainable practices to schools. Three year term to work on issues such as monitoring energy use, decrease consumption, disseminating curriculum resources, establishing indoor air quality practices, revising maintenance and transportation contracts, improving recycling, garden and composting programs.
