6 Assessment of Signature Assignments In the year preceding each course offering, the Department will meet to discuss specifics of the assignment to make sure that it addresses the intended learning outcome. Below are listed each of the 6 learning outcomes along with the course number and description of the signature assignments that will undergo assessment. Learning Outcome 1 Develop a shared vision of learning and problem solving This outcome will be assessed in EDU (Leadership Concepts) Students Final Paper will be evaluated. The course syllabus is attached. Learning Outcome 2 Promote a culture of teaching and learning This outcome will be assessed in EDU Students signature assignment: Evaluate the validity and reliability of a a standardized educational test to solve an educational problem will be evaluated. See online course syllabus for a full description of this project. Learning Outcome 3 Effectively manage a school in the service of teaching and learning This outcome will be assessed in EDU 4609 (Management and Organization). Students signature assignment: Oral and Written Report on a Problem-Based Situation (includes organizational considerations in setting the stage and facilitating the change(s) necessary to reframe and address the issue(s). Suggestions for areas of management focus: Conflict Resolution Plant and Facilities Management Differentiated Staffing Management Data-Based Decision-Making Effective faculty and staff evaluation management Improving Time Management Communications Issues and Techniques Learning Outcome 4 Work effectively with diverse families and communities Page 6 of 8
7 This outcome will be assessed in EDU 4621 Students signature practicum assignment: Completion of a minimum of 30 hours on a practicum project to be carried out among a significantly diverse parent/community population. A written report of a minimum of ten pages detailing work completed in the practicum experience including a binder containing forms and other data collected. See online course syllabus for a full description of this project. Learning Outcome 5 Demonstrate personal ethics and leadership capacity This outcome will be assessed in EDU Students signature assignment: Conduct a technology needs assessment at a local school and develop effective staff development strategies will be evaluated. See online course syllabus for a full description of this project. Learning Outcomes 6 Demonstrate political, social, economic, legal and cultural understanding of education This outcome will be assessed in EDU 4700 Students signature assignment: The Curriculum Process Paper will be evaluated. See online course syllabus for a full description of this project. Page 7 of 8
8 Assessment Methods The program design includes planned processes for the comprehensive assessment of individual candidates on all competencies established in the program. Candidates are informed of the expectations of their performance during the initial interview with the Program Director and the individual class instructor. All expectations are described in detail in the Administrative Services Credential and Master of School Administration Handbook. Multiple measures are utilized to assess candidates performance. Throughout the program, candidates are assisted and guided by multiple professionals including the program director who serves as their academic advisor, course instructors, field supervisors, and employer representative liaisons. Candidates meet regularly with these individuals to reflect on their performance. Faculty members in the School of Education currently use rubrics to assess the signature assignments identified in the courses. Rubrics are shared with students in advance, so that, they understand the expectations of the course. In cases where students do not demonstrate competency in the program learning outcomes, the program director and faculty members meet with the student to discuss steps to improve performance. The Academic Success Center is an important resource for students who need to strengthen their communication, time management, and critical thinking skills. In cases where students to not meet minimum standards in a course, they have the option of repeating the course. In cases where it is clear the student cannot succeed in the program, the Education Committee meets regularly to discuss further interventions, including steps to encourage the student to seek a different career path.
