1 2014 Diocesan Convention Nominating Committee Report Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, The Nominating Committee, began its work on December 10, 2013 at the Cathedral. The Committee was composed of clergy invited from every deanery, laity serving in the major ministries of the Diocese and the diocesan ministry staff. With the insights that breadth of experience in the Diocese brings, the following slate of candidates has been offered, with the goal of providing the strongest possible leadership for the Diocese at this time. We ask that the delegates to convention please give their qualifications your prayerful consideration as you prepare for our annual convention on March In Christ's Service, The Rev. Arthur Jenkins, Chairman The Rev. Canon Jim Lewis, Canon to the Ordinary Standing Committee (2 clergy and 2 lay for 3 years) -Clergy The Rev. Iain Boyd The Rev. Iain Boyd was born in Charlotte, NC and raised in the immediate area. He graduated from Camden Military Academy in 1999, and with hopes of gaining a commission in the Marine Corps, matriculated into The Citadel in the same year. Those hopes were dashed when he encountered Jesus Christ in his junior year. After being active in Campus Outreach and St Alban's at The Citadel, he graduated in 2003 and matriculated into Nashotah House Theological Seminary as a South Carolina low church Anglican. Iain was ordained in 2006 and served as associate at St Paul's in Conway, SC and then at Trinity in Myrtle Beach. Since being ordained, he has been active in preaching and teaching God's word in the parish, to youth and youth pastors in our diocese, and in college ministry. Iain was called as Rector of Trinity in November of The Rev. Michael Clarkson Background: Lawyer, corporate executive. Priest 25 years. Church planter (4 churches: one in U.S., two in U.K. and one in middle east). Family: Linda (married 45 years), 2 sons, 5 grandchildren. Focus: Evangelism, Church Growth, Leadership Development. The Rev. Marshall Huey Marshall was ordained in 2001 and has served as the Rector of Old St. Andrews in Charleston since Under his leadership, the parish has grown and nearly retired a mortgage debt of $729,000. He has served as a Trustee of the Diocese and has been a member of the Ecclesiastical Court. He is currently a member of the Board of Directors of St. Christopher Camp and Conference Center and the Alumni Board of the University of the South at Sewanee. He was one of the founders of the Barrier Island Free Medical Clinic. Marshall was a practicing attorney in Charleston until 1998 when he went to seminary and will bring those skills to the work of the Standing Committee. He has a passion for the Bishops vision of "making Biblical Anglicans for a global age" and leads a mission team from his parish every year to work at Boca Chica in the Dominican Republic. 1

2 The Rev. Michael Lumpkin The Rev. Mike Lumpkin has been ordained for 31 years and has served the last 18 as Rector of St. Paul's, Summerville. He is a past member of the Diocesan Trustees, Congregational Development, Diocesan Council and Standing Committee, serving as secretary for the latter. His ministry passions include rich worship and charismatic renewal and mission including hands-on involvement with St. Paul's mission to St. Jacques, Bois Brulee, Haiti. Mike and his wife Ellen have two grown daughters. -Lay - Mr. Boyd Baker Boyd has been a member of St. Johns, Johns Island for 37 years, served on its Vestry and provided crucial leadership as its Senior Warden. He has also served numerous times as a Delegate to Diocesan Convention, including being one of the electors for Bishop Mark J. Lawrence. He has a great knowledge of the church in South Carolina and its history and has kept up in an interactive way with the movements within the Anglican Communion and the Episcopal Church within the last decade. He has been married to his wife Susan for 37 years and they have 2 children and 2 grandchildren. Mr. Myron Harrington Retired Colonel, USMC, retired Headmaster, Secretary to The Citadel Board of Visitors. Past Senior Warden St. Philip s Church, Charleston, Chalice Bearer, Annual Veteran s Day Service Coordinator, Bishop Lawrence Consecration Committee, Advancement Society, Clergy Society, Diocesan Legal Defense Fund Committee, Mere Anglicanism, Bible Study and Call To Discipleship Course (2 years), Network Evangelism Weekend, Diocesan Convention Delegate, Founding Director and Treasurer of South Carolina Anglican Communion Network. Mrs. Karen Kusko Karen Kusko is a member of The Parish Church of St. Helena where she has served on the vestry as the Representative for Adult Discipleship and is also the President of Board of Trustees for its Classical Christian School and Vice-president of St. Helena's Trust. She is also a lay prayer minister, served as an Alpha group co-leader and has served on the Mission and Outreach Commission. She has served as Parliamentarian for Diocesan Convention and as Presiding Judge of its Ecclesiastical Court. Karen retired in 2004 from the practice of law and shortly thereafter moved to South Carolina. Mr. Rob Shelton My wife and I have four children and a grandson. I am a partner at the Bellamy Law Firm in Myrtle Beach and am very active with the SC Christian Men s Conference, and the Cursillo, Faith Alive, and Chrysalis ministries. 2

3 Diocesan Council (2 clergy and 2 lay for 3 years) -Clergy- The Rev. Janet Echols Janet, grew up in South Carolina, trained at Trinity School for Ministry, served in churches in South Carolina, Indonesia, Pittsburgh, England, India and Israel and worked for SAMS-USA. In 2000 she moved to Cambridge, England where for five years she served as vicar of St. Andrew s Church (C of E) and tutor of Pastoral Theology at Ridley Hall Theological College. In 2008 she became a missionary with Anglican Frontier Missions in India, working in theological education, church planting and community development. She s now priest-in-charge at St. Matthew s, Fort Motte. God s call on her life is to mobilize the church for mission. The Rev. Bob Horowitz Bob has been the Rector of St. Jude's, Walterboro, since November 2011 and previously served +10 years in the Upper Diocese as Assistant Rector at Christ Church, then Rector of Redeemer, both in Greenville. Fr. Bob was raised in the Jewish tradition and was baptized and confirmed in the Episcopal church 21 years ago and ordained in the Diocese of Florida in He and his wife Stephanie (of 31 years) have three adult children, Sam (an Anglican priest), Ben, a graduate student, and Emily, a teacher in Columbia. The Rev. Rob Kunes A native of South Carolina, Rob Kunes grew up in downtown Charleston and was a member of St. Michael s Church. He attended Wofford College and finished with a BA in English from the College of Charleston. After marrying and settling down in Charleston, Rob became active in the Prayer Ministry at St. Michael s. Soon after, Rob was called to pursue ordained ministry and graduated Cum Laude with an M.Div. from Nashotah House in Wisconsin. Ordained to the priesthood in 2010, Rob has served as Assistant Rector at Galilee Church, Virginia Beach. He is thrilled to be back at home serving as Associate Priest at Christ St. Paul s, Yonges Island and Chaplain to the Prayer Center at St. Christopher s. He and his wife, Julie, live in Meggett with their three children, Robert (5), Lillian (3), and Samuel (1). The Rev. Jonathan Riddle Jonathan served as a Youth Minister in this Diocese from He attended Reformed Theological Seminary in Orlando, FL where he received his Masters of Divinity. In 2001 he was ordained by Bishop John Howe in the Diocese of Central Florida and accepted a call to serve as an assistant priest at St. John's Episcopal Church in Melbourne, FL. In 2005 Jonathan ventured into church planting and founded a church in Fort Mill, SC - it provided some of the most exciting and challenging moments in his life. Beginning in their living room with just their family, they shortly outgrew the space and moved their worship services to the local YMCA. Half of those attending were new believers and new to Anglicanism which made it enormously rewarding. Jonathan is currently serving as an Assistant in Bluffton with The Church of the Cross. He and his wife, Lisa, have five children. The Rev. Trevor Spencer Trevor is a recently ordained member of the clergy at Church of the Holy Cross, Sullivan's Island. His primary responsibilities at Holy Cross include youth ministry and pastoral care in addition to Sunday responsibilities. Prior to seminary at Trinity, he served several churches as Youth Minister, and the diocese at large at St. Christopher and through events and communication consulting. 3

4 Lay- Mr. Jim Ewing An Episcopal/Anglican for 71 years, Jim was a member of the discernment group for planting The Well by the Sea and a member of The Well by the Sea since its inception. He has served there as a Vestry Member and Senior Warden. He has also served as Treasurer/Registrar/Board Member of the SC Men s Conference, attended SC Cursillo 128, was a Team member for SC Cursillo nine times and served as Registrar/Secretariat Member SC Cursillo. He has been married for 13 years to Evelyn and they make their home together in Myrtle Beach. He is also a Retired Engineer. Mrs. Kathy Hamilton Confirmed at St. Paul s, Conway, in 1980, Kathy has taught Sunday School to 5-7 year-olds for three years; served as president, vice-president and treasurer of ECW numerous times and served as a deputy to Diocesan Convention twice. Presently she serves as co-coordinator for the Cursillo community of St. Paul s; Prayer Shawl Ministry, Daughters of the King; Lector and Lay Reader; Chalice bearer; LEM; and participates in three small groups for Bible study. Mr. Del Tyner Del Tyner is a member of Christ Church Mt Pleasant. He is the former Jr. and Sr. Warden on the Vestry. He and his wife, Kelli, have three sons and the entire family is very active in the children's and family ministries. He also served on the recent Capital Campaign Committee helping to retire church debt as well as serving on the search committee to call their current rector, Fr. Ted Duvall. Mr. Chuck Wilson Chuck was born in Chester, South Carolina and was confirmed in He attended St. Augustine's College and is a graduate of the University of South Carolina and Gupton-Jones College of Funeral Service. He is employed at Universal Benefits, Inc., Capital Investments and the Imperial Fine Dining as the Human Resources Director, all family-owned businesses. He has served as Music Educator in the public schools and currently is the Director of Music and Organist at the Church of the Holy Comforter, Sumter. Chuck has also served on the Vestry of the Church of the Good Shepherd prior to transferring to Holy Comforter. Ecclesiastical Court (2 clergy and 2 lay for 3 year terms) -Clergy- The Rev. Bill Oldland The Reverend William D. Oldland (Bill) is the rector of St. David's Church in Cheraw. He has served this parish for the past seven years of his 13 years as an ordained minister. He was a youth minister for eight years prior to attending seminary. He and his wife, Ellen, are active in Cursillo. Bill has served as the head spiritual director for Cursillo of North Carolina and has served as spiritual director on two weekends in South Carolina. He has also served as the clergy representative on Diocesan Council for the Florence deanery from 2007 to 2010 and was a member of the Diocesan Finance Commission. 4

5 The Rev. Linda Manuel Linda is currently the Vicar of the Grace Parish church plant in N. Myrtle Beach and on the Commission on Ministry. She moved here seven years ago from the Diocese of Pittsburgh, where she served as the Diocesan Missioner for Small Communities under then Bp. Robert Duncan, was priest of four parishes, and Interim in three others (all following clergy misconduct). She was on Diocesan Council, the Professional Conduct Training Team, NNECA board, Diocesan Adult Education Committee, is a trained Interim, and served many times as a Director of Christian Education. She lives in Georgetown with her husband Bob, and has two sons and five grandchildren. -Lay- Mrs. Ann Hester Willis Ann is a retired lawyer who works in a real estate management business which she owns with her husband, Fred. She is a member of St. Michael s Church, Charleston, and served as a member of its vestry from , as Junior Warden from and Senior Warden from Ann coordinated a $7 million capital campaign for St. Michael s from May 2003 through November 2006, following which she joined the Diocesan staff. She coordinated the development of a master plan for St. Christopher and also provided capital campaign planning, coordination and guidance to parishes within the Diocese. She has served as a Lay Reader and Lay Eucharist Minister, Greeter and a small group leader. Ann was a participant in Cursillo #149 and served on team for Cursillo #159. Ann has been actively involved in Bible study for the past 12 years, and completed the Disciple I and Disciple II courses, the Alpha course, Beta level courses at St. Michael s, and The Ridley Institute Apologetics 101 course. Mr. John Acken Until about 15 years ago, John was a typical Episcopalian, going to church Christmas Eve and Easter to enjoy the pageantry while occasionally attending regular services. Then the Rev. John Barr introduced him to Jesus Christ and his world changed. For most of his life, John was active as first a lawyer and then a businessman. After college in Virginia, he went to Vanderbilt Law School where he met Betsy, who was getting her master s degree in English. They married and had two sons and now seven grandchildren. After Law School, he joined the Navy and was commissioned a line officer but spent most of his time in the courtroom. His civilian career covered about 30 years in the railroad business, most of it in the senior staff in what is now CSX Corporation. For all of that, John says, "As I look back meeting Jesus Christ and my wife Betsy makes everything else seem insignificant." Diocesan Trustees ( 2 lay for 6 year terms and 1 lay for 1 year term) -Lay- Mr. Stephen Markwood A member of The Church of the Cross, Bluffton, since 2010, Steve has served the parish on the Connections Team, Finance Committee, Legacy Endowment Fund Board and Vestry. Steve and his wife, Susan, also served on a mission team to Ireland in Prior to his retirement, he served for 13 years as the President of Alderson-Broaddus University in West Virginia (a Baptist college with 850 students, a 165 acre, 19 building campus worth $180 million) and as a Director for EIIA (a Baptist, Lutheran, Methodist and Presbyterian member college insurance collaborative with a $300 million endowment). 5

6 Mr. Scott Poelker Scott Poelker is the Vice President for Finance and Administration at Trident Technical College. His responsibilities include Finance, Budget, Internal Audit, Human Resources, Procurement, the Book Store, Facilities Management, and Public Safety. He has been with the college since Prior to joining Trident Technical College, Scott served for 20 years as an officer in the U. S. Navy Civil Engineer Corps, where he gained extensive experience in engineering, construction, and financial management. He retired from the Navy with the rank of Commander. Scott graduated from Duke University with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering. He received a Master s of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology. Scott has been a member of St. Paul s Summerville for over 20 years where he has served as Senior Warden, Treasurer, small group leader, teacher, prayer team member, and adult education coordinator. Scott and his wife, Pam, have two adult sons. Mr. Reid Boylston J. Reid Boylston, III, retail grocer, age 63. Lifelong Episcopalian having served as vestryman, Junior and Senior Wardens, delegate to the Diocesan Convention representing the Church of the Holy Apostles, Barnwell. Past service: on Diocesan Council and board member of the Diocesan Men s Conference, also served on the Standing Committee the during the search and election of Bishop Mark Lawrence. He served as a Deputy (delegate) to the General Convention in Recently Senior Warden of the Church of the Holy Apostles and Chairman of the Board of Holy Apostles Episcopal School. Mrs. Karolan Ohanesian Karolan Ohanesian is an attorney in Myrtle Beach, where she has been practicing since She entered law school in 1990, obtaining her Juris Doctorate from the University of South Carolina School of Law in Karolan is admitted to practice law in the United States Supreme Court, as well as all courts of South Carolina; U.S. District Court (federal court), District of South Carolina; U.S. Court of Appeals, Fourth Circuit; U.S. Court of Federal Claims. She is a member of the South Carolina Bar Association, South Carolina Association for Justice and the Horry County Bar Association. Karolan has served as Chancellor for the Church of the Resurrection and currently for The Well by the Sea, of which she is a founder. She is the proud mother of two children, Zack (17) and Sam (10) and is happily married to her husband and business partner, Glenn Ohanesian. Mr. Ed Holt Advancement Society (1 clergy and 2 lay) -Clergy- The Rev. Marcus Kaiser Marcus was born and raised just outside of outside of Orlando, FL. He attended the U.S. Naval Academy and subsequently served eight years in the Navy as a Surface Warfare Office with a specialty in nuclear engineering. Four of those years were spent in Goose Creek, which is where he and his family began attending St. Paul s, Summerville. It was at St. Paul s that Marcus learned radical discipleship and what it meant to truly give one s life for Christ. There he began to discern a call to the priesthood. He then went on to seminary at the Nashotah House in Wisconsin and is now serving as the Assistant Rector at the Church of the Holy Comforter, Sumter. Marcus is married to Kimberly and they have two young boys, James (7) and Jacob (4). 6

7 -Lay- Mrs. Mary Rife Mary has been an active member of the Episcopal Church since She has served on Faith Alive teams and numerous Cursillo teams, serving as Rector of Cursillo #160. Mary is a member of the Altar Guild, having served as Chairman; been elected to Vestry serving as Sr. Warden three years, and Jr. Warden four years. Mary is currently President of DOK chapter, Daughters at the Well. Mary and husband Dick were part of the original group to establish the new church plant, The Well by the Sea in Myrtle Beach. Mary currently serves as the Children s Ministry Coordinator, and has with a group of volunteers established an after school Bible study, The Good News Club, at River Oaks Elementary. Mary is currently secretary for the Christian Haitian American Partnership and has traveled to Haiti as part of a medical/dental team and made two trips to Mississippi for Katrina Relief. Mr. Bill McRee William Bill McRee is Senior Reference Librarian at the Florence County Library System. He is a member of St. John s Church, Florence, where he sings in the senior choir and serves as a lay reader and chalice bearer. He participates in the men s Wednesday morning Bible study and serves on St. John s vestry. He has also served the parish as a convention delegate. On the diocesan level, he serves on Diocesan Council. He has attended the diocesan men s conference for three years. He and his wife, Carol, have attended the past four Mere Anglicanism conferences. Bill is also involved in the Florence community by serving on committees of the Florence Downtown Development Corporation and the board of directors for the Masterworks Choir - a regional choir in which he and Carol sing. 7
