1 Programme Director: Sandhiran Patchay, PhD Dr. Sandhi Patchay: Sandhi obtained his PhD in Neuroscience at the University of Marseille (France), investigating ground reaction forces and kinematics during human locomotion (normal, pathological, aging process). He joined the Department of Psychology and Counselling at the University of Greenwich as a senior lecturer in He is a Principal Lecturer in Psychology and Programme Leader for the BSc Hons Psychology. He has also been acting Head of Department in Sandhi has teaching experience in the UK and France. He teaches research methods and behavioural and cognitive psychology/neuroscience to undergraduates and postgraduates. In 2008, he was the recipient of a grant from the Teaching Quality Enhancement Funding Innovation Fund, University of Greenwich to promote the use of interactive study tools in Neuroscience. Sandhi is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. His previous posts held include Postdoctoral researcher, CNRS- University of Provence, Laboratory of Integrative and Adaptive Neurobiology in Marseille, France; and Welcome Trust Postdoctoral Research Fellow, Department of Psychology, Royal Holloway University of London. Local Programme Manager: Christine McGuire, MSc (HCPC) Christine McGuire: Christine has received a Bachelor s of Science in Psychology and a Master of Science in Counseling Psychology, from the University of LaVerne, California, USA. Ms. McGuire has extensive experience in both therapeutic counselling, as well as within higher education, in which she has been actively involved for over ten years. She is a registered practitioner of the Health Care and Professions Council (HCPC), UK, and an international affiliate member of the American Psychological Association (APA). Christine has established several departments and programmes over the years, such as the NYC counselling department, the MA programme in Clinical-Counselling Psychology with La Salle University, USA, and the Edexcel programme which offers a Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling. In 2008 she became associate dean of the NYC Psychology department, where among her many responsibilities she set up a well structured internship programme for all psychology students at NYC, which has created a strong network with several well esteemed healthcare organizations all over Greece, offering unique opportunities to students for professional development. Christine has also presented numerous seminars and workshops. In 2010 she founded Counselling Now, a
2 private counselling centre that offers a number of counselling and psychoeducational services. Her most recent initiative is The Be Well Project, in which she has developed a systems model of change for well being and has lead to the coauthorship of a book on emotional prosperity awaiting publication. Her long and successful experience in teaching as well as her contagious optimism makes her one of the most popular teachers at New York College. Local Tutors Dr. Remos Armaos: Remos obtained his PhD in Learning and Teaching with Technologies Graduate School of Education, and his MSc in Educational Research from the University of Manchester, UK. He also holds a Degree (Honours) in Primary Education, School of Human and Social Sciences from the University of Patras. His principal research interests lay in the field of psychology and pedagogy, adult learning and technology supported learning environments, specifically computermediated learning on diverse socially excluded groups (drug addicts, young offenders), adults and/or adolscents. He has also been engaged in research on computers as cognitive tools affecting the child s learning development and the beneficial effects of problem-based learning on computer learning contexts. Remos has taught in both graduate and undergraduate programmes at various institutions including, the Hellenic Open University, University of Athens, Department of Primary Education, and La Salle University, and has presented numerous seminars and workshops giving him a strong foundation of both academic and professional experience. He has several publications in International acclaimed Journals as well as books related to his expertise. Remos has served as a Research Fellow National Evaluator, for the National Evaluation of On Track, School of Education & Department of Sociological Studies, at the University of Sheffield, UK. Prior to this he was also engaged as a Social Researcher at the Corporate Development Branch, Greater Manchester Police, in UK. Remos is currently Head of the Staff Education and Training Department at KETHEA, the well renowned Therapy Centre for Dependent Individuals. Dr. Vaia Lestou: Vaia received her MA (Hons) in Psychology and a PhD in Cognitive Neuroscience from Glasgow University, Scotland. She has also completed Cognitive Behavioural Therapy Training (EABCT accredited), from the Institute of Behavioral Research and Therapy in Athens. She is a psychologist-research scientist at Evangelismos Hospital focusing on integrated psychological therapy for schizophrenia and group intervention. Concurrently she also provides therapy at the First Psychiatric Ward, at Eginitio Hospital, University of Athens. Vaia is an Honorary Research Fellow at Birmingham University Imaging Centre (BUIC) & School of Psychology, University of Birmingham. She is also an academic reviewer for the
3 Journal of Cognitive Neuroscience, Journal of Vision and Journal of Experimental Psychology: Human Perception and Performance. Among the many awards and grants she has received is the Wellcome Trust Value In People Award, the Vardinoyianio Foundation, Doctorate Award for Excellence in a Scientific Field and the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) award for postgraduate studies. Vaia has many publications in Scientific Journals and has presented in numerous conferences. She is a professional member of the Society for Neuroscience; the Cognitive Neuroscience Society; and the Vision Sciences Society. Dr. Natasha Soureti: : Natasha holds a PhD from Vrije University, Amsterdam and an MSc in Organisational Psychology, as well as an MSc in Health Psychology from the City University, UK, where she also acted as research assistant and visiting lecturer in Natasha has extensive experience in the area of Health psychology and health behaviour change projects, and is co-ordinator of the stop smoking program Living without smoking in Athens ( This a behaviouraly based program with the optional use of pharmacotherapy. Natasha is trained in Cognitive Therapy and Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR). Her work experience includes working for Unilever R&D in the UK as a behaviour change health Psychologist, and for Bart s & the London Queen s Mary School of Medicine & Dentistry, as a research health psychologist, where among her many responsibilities she helped in setting-up smoking cessation clinics in East London. She has numerous publications in scientific journals and is continuously involved in research projects and academia. Natasha is much appreciated by her students for her approachability and support, and has taken the initiative as a supervisor for 3 rd year students final projects to assist them in continuing their research efforts and present their papers in conferences related to their specific subject area. Sofiana Milioritsa: Sofiana holds an MA in Clinical Counselling Psychology from La Salle University, PA, USA, and an MA in Management of Information Systems, from the London School of Economics and Political Science. She also holds a Postgraduate Diploma in Person-Centered Counselling from the University of Strathclyde, UK. Apart from her experience as a Psychology instructor and involvement in Academia, Sofiana has worked as a communications specialist in a number of multinational companies and as a journalist for Mega Channel. She is a practicing person-centred counselor, a parents' coach (PET method) and offers counselling services to NGOs. Sofiana has a unique ability to connect with her students and motivate them towards personal and professional development. In 2013 she received an award for Teaching Excellence at NYC. 4 Dimitris Panagiotopoulos: : Dimitris completed his MA (Hons) in Philosophy from the well renowned University of St Andrews, Scotland, and then went on to complete an MSc in Counselling Studies at University of Abertay Dundee, Scotland. He also holds a Postgraduate Certificate in Consciousness and Transpersonal Psychology, which is one of his main areas of interest and research. Dimitris has been teaching at NYC for the past six years and his passion for teaching, as well as the individual attention he gives to his students make him one of the most popular instructors within the Psychology Department. He has also held the post of Assistant Head of Department and has been involved in student academic advising for a number of years. Currently, Dimitris is preparing for a PhD in the area of Transpersonal Psychology and Consciousness. Dr. Antonia Swenson: Antonia holds a PhD in Psychology from Goldsmiths University of London and an MSc in Health Psychology from the University of Surrey, UK. Apart from her teaching responsibilities at NYC, Antonia holds a part-time post as an ISPS International Organiser (ISPS is a global organization with presence in over 20 countries and a history of 50 years. It is composed of the leading international professionals, service providers and academics in the field of psycho-social intervention, and organizes conferences, awareness campaigns, and training at national, regional and local levels around the world.) Antonia also held a researcher post for the National School of Public Health in Athens, where she was involved in research on intergenerational relationships funded by the 5 th Framework of the European Commission. Furthermore she was involved as a Project Evaluator/Researcher at Anglia University, Cambridge, where she conducted a twoyear evaluation of the international project Mistral to improve the employment opportunities of people with mental health problems, physical and learning disabilities; a project funded by the European Social Fund. Antonia is also a Dance Movement Therapist specialising in work with children, women and vulnerable populations. Dr. Alexandra Thanellou: Alexandra holds an MA & a PhD in Experimental Psychology/Behaviour Neuroscience from the University of Vermont, USA. She has held a Post-doctoral research position at the Department of Systems Neuroscience at University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf (UKE), Hamburg, Germany, and was a research assistant for the Psychology Department at the University of Vermont, where she also lectured in Biopsychology; Learning,
5 Cognition & Behaviour; and the History of Psychology. Apart from her involvement in academia, Alexandra is also a mental health counsellor at KETHEA (Diavasi), where she leads self-help groups for parents whose children are members of the therapeutic program. She has also held a post as assistant clinical psychologist at sinouri psychiatric clinic in Athens. Alexandra is our newest faculty addition, and is quite enthusiastic about joining NYC and bringing her knowledge and experience into the classroom. We are excited to have her on board! Maria Christopoulou: Maria studied Mass Media and Communication at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. She also holds a BSc in Psychology (1 st class Honours) and an MSc in Organizational Psychology from the University of Hertfordshire, UK, and is a graduate member of the British Psychological Society (BPS). She has been involved with teaching the module Research Methods in Psychology, and is well-liked by her students for her great enthusiasm and for being able to teach complex topics, which mostly include Statistics and the use of SPSS, in a simple and meaningful way to her students.
