I decided to study graphic design seriously after I graduated from high school. I have been studying at Yoobee for nearly 2 years and I m really loving it! Everyday I look at my design work and think how I can improve it, and make people like it more. Tim was one of the 17 students being selected to be featured in the Creative & Technical: Thai students and New Zealand Exhibition in Bangkok as part of the New Zealand Prime Minister mission to Thailand in Some of this work is featured here. This was an exciting opportunity for me to showcase my passion in design in my country. In most of my work I try to combine fashion, art and movement together. I like to use texture and brushes to make movement in my work. In this work I tried to make an illusion combined with fashion. 4 5

6 CERTIFICATE IN DIGITAL MEDIA (icreate) FULL TIME 15 WEEKS LEVEL 3 NZQA APPROVED If you re interested in creative digital media but not sure of the path you want to take, then consider icreate. It s a fun and practical way to explore the many options available at Yoobee. You ll try your hand at animation, video production, graphic and web design, with practical art sessions to brush up on your creative skills. Projects include making a video, developing 3D animations, creating a website and designing graphics and illustrations for print, all using industry standard software. icreate will help you figure out what area of design really inspires you. After successfully completing the course you ll qualify to move on to diploma level study. COURSE COMPONENTS Core Skills Learn how to use a digital still camera, scan images, use image and illustration software to create and manipulate images, explore the use of pattern and texture, create a visual diary, learn design principles such as colour theory, pattern and texture, and computer file management. Print Learn the production planning process for printed documents, create single and multipage documents for printing, and understand graphic design terms and principles. Motion Gain an understanding of the production planning process for animated and video based productions, understand film and animation terms, make a short film, model a simple character and animate a supplied character. Interactive Learn the production planning process for web-based projects, understand web and new media terms, use computer video editing software to compress for the web, produce a basic website and Flash animation. SOFTWARE Software used on this course may include Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, imovie or Premiere, Flash, Blender or Lightwave and Dreamweaver. EQUIPMENT Apple Mac computers, digital still and video cameras, scanners and printers. ASSESSMENT Assessment is based on project work, and visual and oral presentations. There are no examinations. ENTRY There are generally no restrictions to entry. Whilst previous computer skills are not compulsory, some basic computer skills are very helpful. 7 DIPLOMA IN ANIMATION & DIGITAL VIDEO FULL TIME 35 OR 41 WEEKS LEVEL 5 NZQA APPROVED Do you dream of working in animation or video production? Then Yoobee s Diploma in Animation and Digital Video is the ideal launching pad for you. This course teaches skills and techniques of animation and video production and you ll be working on projects from idea to reality. You ll develop storytelling and design skills, learn to shoot, capture and edit digital video, record voiceovers, edit music and create your own soundtracks. This course also covers the latest industry standard techniques for 3D modelling and animation as well as post-production finishing touches. With this diploma in hand, you can develop your skills further with Yoobee s more specialised Level 6 courses the Diploma in Digital Filmmaking (Advanced) or Diploma in Animation (Advanced). All projects have to reach a specified standard. There are no examinations. ENTRY Show us your creativity by submitting some examples of your work in a medium of your choice. A working knowledge of digital imaging software, such as Photoshop, and illustration software such as Illustrator, is an advantage. FURTHER LEARNING Once you have successfully completed this course, you are strongly encouraged to further develop your skills in Yoobee s Diploma of Animation (Advanced) or Diploma in Digital Filmmaking (Advanced). CAREER OPPORTUNITIES Successful graduates can seek entry level positions in the video or animation industries. For example, motion graphic designer, video editor, 3D animator, 3D modeller/texturer, visual effects artist or compositor. However, our industry contacts suggest a minimum of two to three years study in this field is more desirable

8 DIPLOMA IN GAME ART FULL TIME 2 YEARS LEVEL 7 NZQA APPROVAL PENDING Join one of fastest growing industries worldwide. If you are creative and have a passion for games, why not become a game design artist? Yoobee is pleased to announce New Zealand s first game art diploma. This new two-year programme will require you to have some experience in game art, or animation. This may have been gained through previous study or work experience. Your first year of study will focus on developing skills in all aspects of game art asset design and development. This will include 2D and 3D characters and environment assets, as well as user interface assets. The first year provides an overview of the roles and responsibilities within the game development industry, and the tools used by teams to manage game production and all its facets. During the second year you will select a specific area of focus, such as 2D, 3D or user interface design and development. You will work in a team to design and develop game art assets for a complete game. You will be supported by an industry mentor who will provide a game skeleton, technical guidance and feedback on your art and design. You will learn how to manage game engine technical constraints throughout the pipeline production and create an interactive game that displays your game art capabilities. Throughout the programme you will be developing an extensive game art asset portfolio which will showcase what you have designed and produced. You will also create a blog which will capture your design thinking processes. Both these resources will be vital for obtaining employment in the industry. Unity: used in Slender, Wasteland 2, Dead Trigger 2, Dragons of Elanthia, Deus Ex: The Fall and many more. Assessment Assessments are standards-based. All projects must reach industry standard. There are no examinations. Entry Requirements In order to gain direct entry into the Diploma of Game Art, students will need to be able to demonstrate an interest in game art and/or animation and they will need to have successfully completed one of the following qualifications:: Yoobee School of Design Diploma of Interactive Design (Level 6) Yoobee School of Design Diploma of Animation (Advanced) (Level 6) Yoobee School of Design Diploma in Advanced 3D Graphics (Level 7) Students can also be considered for entry if they meet the following criteria: Successful completion of : Yoobee School of Design Diploma in Animation and Digital Video (Level 5) OR Yoobee School of Design Diploma of Computer Graphic Design (Level 6) OR Yoobee School of Design Diploma of Web Development (Level 6) or equivalent qualifications completed at other institutions. In addition to this qualification, students will need to demonstrate proficiency in Maya. They will need to provide samples of their portfolio or work, equivalent to the skills necessary to successfully undertake the programme of study. 9 DIPLOMA OF COMPUTER GRAPHIC DESIGN FULL TIME 35 OR 41 WEEKS LEVEL 6 NZQA APPROVED The Diploma of Computer Graphic Design will teach you how to combine creative and digital skills with the objective of creating printed work that is compelling, persuasive and powerful. You ll learn all about typography and layout, as well as how to capture and manipulate images for print. You ll gain an understanding of the design process and use it to create great work including digital illustrations, brand identities, packaging, posters, magazines, brochures, ads and more. 12 DIPLOMA IN DIGITAL FILMMAKING (ADVANCED) FULL TIME 41 WEEKS LEVEL 6 NZQA APPROVED Course components Video Production Video production processes: from concept to storyboarding, pre-production planning, shooting and editing; working in teams to shoot short films. If you ve always wanted to make movies and music videos, then this is the course for you. You ll learn how to shoot quality footage and turn it into a work of art using advanced digital post-production techniques. At the start of the course you ll learn movie-making basics including idea generation, scriptwriting, production design, planning, legal issues, lighting and cinematography. Working in a team you ll write, direct and shoot your own short film. Then you ll learn how to really polish your work using post-production techniques such as editing, audio mixing, motion graphics, compositing, VFX and DVD authoring. By the end of the course you ll have a showreel to impress prospective employers, as well as your own short film. From here, you may choose to go on to further study in filmmaking or use your skills to apply for a job in the exciting industries of film and television or post-production. Video Editing Learn how to edit footage, shot at different times and locations, to create a compelling and interesting story. Audio Post Production Edit, process and effect audio; edit voiceovers and music, create foley effects and assemble soundtracks. Compositing and Visual Effects (VFX) Integrate 3D animation and live motion video, and composite multiple video sources to create fantastic visual effects. Graphic Design Create vector and bitmap graphics for use in motion graphics and television commercials. Motion Graphics Combine design skills with animation and effects to create animated visuals for TVCs, titles, idents and DVDs. Critique and analyse some of the best (and worst) film and television ever created. By successfully completing this course you will have the necessary core skills in digital imaging, video production, editing and compositing to maximise your learning potential in the Diploma in Digital Filmmaking (Advanced). Applicants who have not completed the Diploma in Animation and Video are still eligible for direct entry if they can demonstrate a range of video production skills. This will require submission of examples of completed video projects for consideration. 13 DIPLOMA IN ADVANCED 3D GRAPHICS FULL TIME 41 WEEKS LEVEL 7 NZQA APPROVED The Diploma in Advanced 3D Graphics is a new programme, offered for the first time in 2013*. It allows students to specialise in 3D graphics, creating a showreel that demonstrates their skills to employers. In this competitive industry, it s skills rather than qualifications that get you work and a solid show reel is proof of your creative talent and technical skill. This studio-based course works closely with employers to teach you advanced skills on industry standard software. Produce an individual showreel and accompanying print portfolio that effectively showcase your talent to prospective employers. Assessment All projects are to be produced to a commercial standard. This hands-on visual communications course will help you take the next step in your digital design career. Develop your existing creative and technical skills. Explore art and design history, enhance your research and communication skills, strengthen your professional skills with practical career advice, CV and interview tips, and undertake real projects for industry clients. The Diploma of Digital Media (Advanced) is challenging and rewarding. It will help make you more competitive in your search for a career in design and act as a pathway to further your studies at a degree level. Either way, you ll graduate with a portfolio that really stands out and have true confidence in your creative abilities. COURSE COMPONENTS Studio The main component of the programme. FURTHER LEARNING The Diploma of Digital Media (Advanced) provides pathways for students wanting to pursue further study at degree level. English Component You will study English for three hours each day, Monday to Thursday, with Friday set aside for test preparation. Design Components You will study digital design for two hours each day including a self-directed study class. Learn how to create panoramas and manipulate images. Animation Learn the basic principles of 2D animation, develop a character and create a short animation piece in Flash. Digital Video Study filmmaking methods, then plan, shoot and edit footage shot on a digital camera to create a short film. Print Design Learn about layout and print design using Illustrator and InDesign. Web Design Learn to build and test a simple website. Software Software used on this course includes Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Flash, imovie, After Effects and Dreamweaver. Equipment Apple Mac computers, digital cameras, scanners and printers. Assessment Your English will be assessed on your class work and tests during your course. There will also be a final exam. You can choose to take an external English test as well, such as International English Language Test System (IELTS), Cambridge English Exam or TOEFL. Your digital design skills will be assessed through briefs you complete every two to three weeks. You must complete and pass each of the briefs to gain this qualification. Further Learning Once you have successfully completed the course, your options for further study depend on the language level you have reached. All the technical skills I learnt at Yoobee have been great and have enhanced our business, but the most valuable thing I took away from my time at Yoobee was work ethic. Be diligent, be on time, and stick to deadlines. Plan and make room for your creativity. It s about letting boundaries and deadlines enhance you creativity, not stunt it. My tutor at Yoobee was great. Accessible, easy to talk to and always willing to give me more time. Yoobee classes are small so you get to know all the other students around you too.
