2 - 2 - IMPORTANCE OF INDICATORS The report card is presented in chart format. It is read from left to right with the school names and districts in the far left column, and the Overall Absolute and In-context scores in the far right. The scores and ranks in each cell correspond to the indicator at the top of the column and the school at the start of the row. We use a typical school grading system where A+ is the best and F is the worst. The schools appear in the chart according to their Overall Rank with number one at the top. The schools without enough data to create an Overall Grade are unranked and separated. Specific aspects of the AIMS Report Card assessment chart are described in the diagram below. The example was taken from the 1 st Annual Report Card on Western Canadian High Schools Section. It is representative of the standard format. For quick reference, identify the aspect in question by the arrow and read the accompanying description adjacent to the arrow. PLEASE NOTE The grades are designed to reflect schools performance; they are not designed to assess students. Not all indicators of school quality are included due to data availability. The final grades and ranks reflect the schools overall performance as an average of only the available indicators included in each category. If there are no final grades, there was not enough information to legitimately assess overall school performance. It is important to understand where schools rank overall but it is just as important to understand how they rank on individual indicators. Schools may be weak in some areas and strong in others, this variation is not reflected by the Overall Grades. Also, individual indicators reveal performance in specific areas. Overall grades are based on the general objectives of schools. Examining individual indicators enables assessment based on what you believe is important.
3 The final grade on the report card is calculated using the average of the Overall absolute and Overall In- Context grades The category of indicators (i.e. inputs, Engagement, Achievement) Inputs 1 The header indicates the type of scores in the column below The brackets in the header state the total number of schools ranked and graded for each indicator The second column is always the ranks Absolute indicates the row that contains absolute scores In-Context indicates the row that contains the scores that have been adjusted considering the factors outside of the school s control The overall performance header indicates the overall Absolute and In- Context scores indicates the indicator is not applicable in the assessment due to either incomplete or missing data 3 Final WRC1 (Rank of 179 schools) High School Enrolment (Rank of 290 schools) Pupil Teacher Ratio (Rank of 270 schools) Average Teacher Certification (percentile) (Rank of 0 schools) SES (Percentile) (Rank of 290 schools) Feeder (Percentile) schools (Rank of 0 schools) Absolute and In Context (Using Inputs to estimate predicted outcomes) schools Scores The column underneath the header for Input indicators is the actual score (e.g. Lake Lenore School had an average of 58 students during the , and school years).
