CREATING CONSTRUCTION DOCUMENTS Construction Documents are created from Dynamic Building Views of the model. The process for creating Plan views was outlined in AECOsimBD-A06-Creating the Master Model, and for Reflected Ceiling Plan views in AECOsimBD-A11-Creating Ceilings. Other building views such as sections, elevations, and details can be created from these plan views by the use of Building Callouts tools. The basic workflow is outlined below: 1 Dynamic Building Plan Views are created in the 3D Master Model. 2 The Dynamic Building Plan View is referenced into a 2D drawing model, where notes, dimensions and additional 2D linework is added (The 2D drawing model is referenced to a sheet model). A callout is placed in the drawing model to create a Dynamic Building Section View. 3 The Dynamic Builidng Section View is saved in the 3D Master Model and placed on a drawing and the drawing referenced to a sheet. Other types of workflows are supported, such as referencing Building Dynamic Views directly to sheet models without using the drawing model, but this is the most common workflow and the one that will be discussed in this Quick Start Guide. CREATING A DYNAMIC BUILIDNG SECTION VIEW A Dynamic Building Section View is created by placing a section callout on a plan view in a drawing or sheet model. Placing a Section Callout The Place Section Callout tool is used to place a section callout on a floor plan in a drawing or sheet model and create a Dynamic Building Section View. It can be accessed from the Drawing Composition task bar on the Building Designer task menu. In the Place Section Callout Dialog select the Arch Building Section Drawing Seed. Set the Height to From Model so that the section is cut through the full range of the Master Model. Check Create Drawing in order to have the option to create both a Drawing and a Sheet model for the section view. Page 3 of 14 v2.0
Use data points to place the Section Callout on the plan following the prompts on the lower left of the interface. Create Drawing In the Create Drawing dialog create a Name for the Dynamic Building View. Note the Name will be used as the Drawing Title when the View is placed on a sheet. In order to automatically create a Drawing Model, with the Building Dynamic View referenced, check Create Drawing Model. Create a new drawing file to contain the Drawing Model by checking Filename and selecting the New File icon. Set the Annotation Scale for the Drawing. In order to automatically create a Sheet Model, with the newly created Drawing referenced, check Create Sheet Model. Create a new sheet file to contain the Sheet Model by checking Filename and selecting the New File icon. Set the Annotation Scale for the Sheet. Sheet files can be set up so that the annotations scale is full size, therefore the border reference is not scaled and the drawing model reference Page 4 of 14 v2.0
is scaled. This facilitates adding additional drawings to the sheet at different scales. Alternatively, the sheet file can be set up at the same annotation scale as the drawing and the sheet border reference is scaled. The Dynamic Building Section View will be written to and saved in the Master Model. Hypermodel links will be created between the view saved in the Master Model, the drawing and the sheet. CREATING A DYNAMIC BUILDING INTERIOR ELEVATION VIEW A Dynamic Building Interior Elevation View is created by placing an elevation callout on a plan view in a drawing or sheet model. Placing an Elevation Callout The Place Elevation Callout tool is used to place both elevation and interior elevation callouts on any Dynamic Building View in a drawing or sheet model in order to create a Dynamic Building Elevation View. It can be accessed from the Drawing Composition task bar on the Building Designer task menu. In the Place Elevation Callout dialog select the interior elevation icon. Select the appropriate Drawing Seed; Arch Interior Elevation. Set the Height to User Defined and input the ceiling height. Check Create Drawing in order to have the option to create both a Drawing and a Sheet model for the detail view. Interior elevation callouts can contain multiple wings with corresponding drawing numbers. For example one callout with four wings can be used to indicate four interior elevations (walls) in a room. Use data points to place the Elevation Callout on the plan and select a direction for each interior elevation following the prompts on the lower left section of the interface. Page 5 of 14 v2.0
One drawing file is created, regardless of the number of interior elevations. A separate drawing model will be created for each interior elevation within the single drawing file. In order to automatically create a Sheet Model, with the newly created Drawings referenced, check Create Sheet Model. Create a new sheet file to contain the Sheet Model by checking Filename and selecting the New File icon. Once the Dynamic Building Interior Elevation Views are created use the clip handles on each elevation to limit the elevation to the interior of the room. Select the elevation marker. The handles will highlight. Drag a handle to change the limits of the Dynamic View. Page 6 of 14 v2.0
In order to navigate to the sheet, hover the cursor over the elevation marker and select Open Target from the mini tool bar. The interior elevation drawings will be attached to the sheet. Select any object in one of the drawings and use the Move Reference command from the right-click menu to reposition the drawings on the sheet. Notes and dimensions can be added in the drawing models. Page 7 of 14 v2.0
CREATING A DYNAMIC BUILDING ENLARGED PLAN VIEW A Dynamic Building Enlarged Plan View is created by placing a detail callout on a plan view in a drawing or sheet model. Placing a Detail Callout The Place Detail Callout tool is used to place a detail callout on any Dynamic Building View in a drawing or sheet model and create a Dynamic Building Detail View. It can be accessed from the Drawing Composition task bar on the Building Designer task menu. In the Place Detail Callout Dialog select the appropriate Drawing Seed. Set the Height to From View so that the detail matches the view range of the current Dynamic Building View. Select the shape of the detail callout. Check Create Drawing in order to have the option to create both a Drawing and a Sheet model for the detail view. Use data points to place the Detail Callout on the plan following the prompts on the lower left of the interface. Page 8 of 14 v2.0
Create a New File to contain the Drawing Model by checking Filename and selecting the New File icon. Set the Annotation Scale for the Drawing. Once the Drawing is created it is possible to place it on the same sheet. Placing a Drawing on a Sheet In order to place the newly created drawing on the same sheet, right-click on the detail callout and select the Place Drawing option. It is also possible to place the drawing on a different sheet. Open the sheet file and use the Project Explorer to drag and drop the Drawing onto the Sheet. Select the attachment method as Interactive. Page 9 of 14 v2.0
By using either method, the Reference Attachment Settings dialog opens. Set the View to Standard Views > Top, turn on Live Nesting and set the Nesting Depth as required. Turn on Create for the Drawing Title. Select OK. Use a data point to position the drawing on the sheet. A Drawing Title is placed along with the Enlarged Plan View. Drawing Titles Drawing Titles are made up of Graphics and text fields that harvest information such as the Detail Scale and the Name from the referenced Dynamic Building View as well as the sheet number from the sheet model properties. The Annotation Scale tool found on the Drawing Composition task bar will open the Model Properties dialog where not only annotation scale is set, but also Sheet Properties. Note that the Sheet Name is harvested and fills in the Sheet Number in the Title Block callout. Page 10 of 14 v2.0
The Drawing Title is linked to the Building Dynamic View and drawing model that make up the drawing. By hovering the cursor over the Drawing Title a mini toolbar will pop-up with several options; open the 3D Master Model where the Dynamic Building View is stored, open the Drawing Model where the Dynamic Building View is attached, or turn on any callouts for Building Dynamic Views that intersect the referenced Building Dynamic View. This facilitates the necessary navigation between the model, the drawing and the sheet. DRAWING RESYMBOLIZATION AECOsim Building Designer employs a system of resymbolization rules known as the Family and Part System. This determines the appearance of components like walls, slabs, structural members, duct, and pipe in the Dynamic Building View. Separate symbologies can be defined for the Forward view, Back view, Cut, and the 3D Building model. Building Dynamic Views utilize the Part and Family system in the same manner as the Drawing Extraction Manager. DRAWING NOTATION Notes, dimensions, and additional 2D linework are typically added to the Building Dynamic View in the drawing model. Placing Notes There are a number of tools on the Annotation task bar for placing and editing text on the drawing model. One of the most common tools is the Place Note tool. The Place Note tool is used to place notes or text on a drawing. Select a Text Style. The Text Style sets attributes of the text such as the font, and the text size. Select a Dimension Style. The Dimension Style sets the attributes for the leader and arrow. Use the Text Editor to type in the text. Place on drawing by selecting an object in the Dynamic Building View and then placing the text. Page 11 of 14 v2.0
Placing Dimensions There are a number of tools on the Annotation task bar for placing and editing dimensions on the drawing model. One of the most common dimensioning tools is the Dimension Linear tool. The Dimension Linear tool is used to place a string of dimensions on a drawing. Select a Dimension Style. The Dimension Style sets the attributes for the dimension text, leaders and terminators. Check the Start and End Extension and use the pull-down to select a different terminator. Place the dimesnion string by snapping to an object in the referenced Builidng Dynamic View, placing the location of the dimension, and then continuing to snap to points. Page 12 of 14 v2.0
CACHED VISIBLE EDGES There are many benefits to the dynamic nature of Dynamic Building Views, and there are also scenarios and work flows that may not warrant the reprocessing of a Dynamic View. Occasionally design activities and schedules can be separate from the documentation process. A Cached Dynamic View permits the documentation to capture a point in time to reflect the state of the design, and allow the documentation team to work toward a delivery milestone. Meanwhile, the design team can proceed with design development without impacting the documentation. Once the documentation is complete, the Cached Dynamic Views can be restored to dynamic to update the documentation to the current state of the design. Another beneficial Cached Dynamic View scenario is when a design has stabilized and is not undergoing significant changes. Users can experience a performance increase while navigating between files and models since Cached Dynamic Views need not sync with design model changes. In this case, Cached Dynamic Views is an additional option to enhance documentation productivity. Setting a Dynamic Building View to Cached Cached Dynamic Views is a utility that enables Dynamic View results to be "Cached". This option is available in the References dialog box, under the Visible Edges Display option. It is only available for Dynamic View references and only if they use the Visible Edges display style. To set a Dynamic view back to Dynamic simply reset the Visible Edges Display option in the Reference dialog box. Page 13 of 14 v2.0
Updating a Cached Dynamic Building ViewWhen a Cached Dynamic Building view is no longer synchronized with the model, a warning pops up when the drawing model is opened. In addition, the reference Status notes that the Visible Edge Cache is out of date in the Reference dialog box. Selecting the pencil icon with a data point will update the Cached view, and the reference will remain cached. MOVIE: Creating Construction Drawings This movie shows: 1. Enlarged Floor Plans 2.
