3 RECOMMENDATIONS Race and the Institution Task Force GRADUATE AND PROFESSIONAL STUDENTS Recommendation 1: Improved Infrastructure. The Graduate School should expand existing activities in the Office of Graduate Student Diversity Initiatives. Two additional full time equivalent (FTE) administrative positions should be created to expand and support recruitment activities. Recommendation 2: Recruitment. Recommendation 3: Assessment and Accountability. The Graduate School should expand existing assessment efforts to include measures of climate, cultural competency, and recruitment to increase diversity; fund a full time position to develop assessment procedures; and allocate a graduate research assistantship (GRA) every year to assist in the administration of assessment and data analysis.

6 Programs: Recruitment Preview Weekend Preview weekend is a recruitment event held in mid February aimed at increasing the number of talented and diverse domestic students in graduate education at Virginia Tech. Faculty nominate students and the selection is made by ORDI on a first come first serve basis. This program is focused on yielding already admitted students by offering a paid, two day, high quality visit to campus. Coordinated School Visits Program (CSVP) The Coordinate School Visits Program began as an initiative of the College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences (CLAHS) to recruit competitive students at minority serving institutions (MSIs). The program landed in the realm of ORDI in 29 as the funding from the Provost office seized and the scope of the program expanded to include all graduate programs, not juts ones in CLAHS. Because of the transition of ORDI, no visits were planned or completed in 29. Beginning in January 21, ORDI hosted a series of planning meeting to include the founders of the program and the Office of Equity and Inclusion (now the office of Diversity and Inclusion). This fall seven trips are scheduled. An updated website, GoogleMap feature, and CSVP calendar are in place. Ongoing Programs ORDI also hosts weekly tours, monthly open houses, scheduled department visits, and local recruitment trips year round. ORDI works in collaboration with departments and offices on campus that support graduate students to further our mission of recruiting, retaining, and graduating a diverse student body. During the summer, ORDI provides socials and programming for 1 campus Research Experience for Undergraduate programs.
7 Programs: Diversity Luncheons ORDI hosts luncheon during all Multicultural Programs and Services monthly celebrations (e.g. Hispanic/Latino Heritage Month). These informal forums allow students to communicate with administrators about their experience as a graduate student at Virginia Tech. Sponsorship and Participation Across Campus ORDI supports campus programing which promotes diversity such as events held by ODI, student groups, and CAEE, McNair Scholars, MAOP, VT Advance, and others. This cross collaboration amongst departments allows for strengthened programming and varied offerings. Call for Diversity Initiatives ORDI requests proposals from any academic unit for activities to improve the recruitment, retention, climate, mentoring and graduation of a diverse student population. Proposals can include activities, programs, and efforts that go along the ideas of inclusive excellence to foster a better graduate school environment for students of all backgrounds. Orientation Based on the feedback from last year s luncheons, ORDI hosted its first orientation event focused on student social adjustment to Virginia Tech. The event was a collaboration with Cranwell International Center to provide a anecdotal and social program joining new and returning students with campus and community resources through purposeful interactions. Funding for Students ORDI manages the nominations and distributions of funding directed toward the recruitment and retention of a diverse graduate student population. The Dean Diversity Assistantships are a partnership with departments to provide split funding for highly sought out recruits. Other funding sources include GEM Fellowship Programs, McNair Assistantships, and Powell Fellowships.
