2 Fall 2010 TO 2011 APPLICANTS TO THE BREAD LOAF SCHOOL OF ENGLISH M.LITT. PROGRAM: Thank you for your interest in the Bread Loaf School of English Master of Letters program. The M.Litt. program is designed for highly qualified candidates who already hold an M.A. in English. The program builds in a concentrated way on the broader base of the Master of Arts in English. Students design and pursue a field of specialization, based on the courses and areas (literary periods, genres, topics; writing and the teaching of writing; creative arts) that we offer. To learn more about the M.Litt. program, see the Bread Loaf catalog or go to: This letter will walk you through the application process; the instructions apply to both online and hard-copy applications. Students who request a mailed application packet will receive an M.Litt. application form, two reference forms, the most recent Bread Loaf catalog, and other informational materials. IMPORTANT DATES: The 2011 dates and fees for all four campuses are (or will be) posted on our Web site. The 2011 catalog is published in January. The 2011 course descriptions are posted on our Web site as soon as we have them, usually late in December. When to Apply: The first round of admission decisions for summer 2011 are made shortly after January 10. Applications received after that date are reviewed on a rolling basis through May 15. Please note that some campuses fill sooner than others, and an early application (i.e., an application received by the Bread Loaf office before January 10) will increase your chances for acceptance at your first-choice campus and for enrollment in your top-choice courses. It is also in your best interest to apply early if you plan to apply for financial aid. Course registration for returning and newly admitted students begins on February 15. Students admitted after that date can register for courses as soon as they are accepted. Admitted students will receive course registration information with their admission letters. STEP ONE: Completing the Application Form (online or hard copy) Please read the instructions below carefully and answer all of the questions on the form. Alternatively, you may complete the online application, which asks for the same information. You are required to assemble and send the same supporting materials described in "Step Two" for both the online and hard-copy application. CAMPUS CHOICE: Check off your first-choice campus at the top of the form (or online form); we do not permit multiple applications, so you may not apply to more than one campus at a time. You can apply to any one of the four Bread Loaf campuses (and you can attend different campuses in subsequent summers). The only residency requirement is that all degree students must spend at least one summer at the home campus in Vermont. If you are admitted to Bread Loaf but the campus for which you have applied is full, you will be offered the choice of a place on the wait list for your first-choice campus or immediate admission to another campus at which there is room. DEGREE PROGRAM: Applicants to the M.Litt. program must complete the special M.Litt. application form instead of the regular form.
3 FINANCIAL AID: If you plan to apply for financial aid, check the appropriate box. You can apply for aid online or download the materials and mail your forms to the office of Student Financial Services. For information, forms, and the online application go to: Forms for summer 2011 will be available in the fall. You may submit your application for aid at any time, but the application will be considered only after you have been admitted to Bread Loaf. Since our financial aid budget is limited, we urge you to apply as early as possible. Questions regarding financial aid should be directed to the Office of Student Financial Services by calling or by at: SPECIAL FELLOWSHIPS: Bread Loaf usually offers some special fellowships, made possible by grants and gifts; they will have their own application forms with special requirements and deadlines. Descriptions of any fellowships for 2011 will be posted on the financial aid page of the Bread Loaf Web site, if and when they become available. RACE AND ETHNICITY: Please note that we are required by the Federal government to ask the race and ethnicity questions that appear on the application, but responding is optional for you. STEP TWO: Submitting Required Additional Application Materials (required for everyone) To complete your application, you are required to submit the items listed below; only the photo is optional. Please note that you may send the statement of purpose and the writing sample via (send them to: Transcripts and letters of recommendation must come by regular mail. If you are mailing your materials, we suggest that you assemble all the required admissions documents and send them in one packet to the Bread Loaf office at the address below. If you need to send certain materials separately, we advise you to check with the Bread Loaf office to make sure they arrive. Transcripts and letters of reference can be mailed by schools and individuals directly to the Bread Loaf office. We cannot review your application until it is complete. A NON-REFUNDABLE $60 APPLICATION FEE, payable to Middlebury College. Note: This fee is waived for Middlebury College undergraduates and alumni, for anyone who has applied to Bread Loaf and paid the fee in past years, and for some special fellowship and international applicants. TRANSCRIPTS. Official transcripts of undergraduate work and graduate work (indicating your M.A. in English) you have completed must be sent directly to Bread Loaf, or they can be sent to you in a sealed envelope for transmission to us (still in the sealed envelopes). If the registrar is unwilling to send the transcript to you, he or she may of course send it directly to Bread Loaf. LETTERS OF REFERENCE. You must send two letters of reference, using the Bread Loaf reference form you received or downloaded. At least one of your referees should be able to address directly your capacity for graduate work in literature; letters from former instructors are particularly useful in this regard. Please read the reference forms carefully, and print your name at the top of each. If you waive your right to inspect material in your file, you should sign your name in the space marked "Signature of Applicant" and date it. Both letters, with forms, must then be signed and dated by the referees and placed in sealed envelopes before being returned to you (letters may also be mailed directly to the Bread Loaf office). Additional letters are permitted. STATEMENT OF PURPOSE. We ask that you write a brief statement telling us your reasons for wanting to attend the Bread Loaf School of English. Such a statement might include an outline of professional or personal goals, a description of your academic background or current interests, or any other information that will help us assess your candidacy.
4 PROPOSED FIELD OF STUDY. M.Litt. applicants must write a preliminary description of their proposed field of study (we require M.Litt. candidates to submit a fuller, formal concentration proposal after their first summer at Bread Loaf). This preliminary proposal should be designed with an eye to the kinds of courses Bread Loaf actually offers, and it should describe how you see those courses fitting together within a concentration. WRITING SAMPLE. M.Litt. applicants must submit a page sample of recent graduatelevel writing. Your essay(s) should evidence your skill in analyzing texts as well as in confronting critical/secondary literature. Students hoping to pursue a concentration in the creative arts may submit a portion of a creative portfolio. A RECENT PHOTOGRAPH (OPTIONAL). We request this photo simply in order to help us match name and face more easily once you arrive at Bread Loaf; but we emphasize that your sending it is completely optional, and it is not used in the admission process.
