2 Choosing the right subjects Making decisions about your future in year 10 can be confusing, so keep it simple. When selecting subjects for VCE, try thinking through this process: Subjects > Course > Career By reversing this process, subject selection for VCE should become clear: Career > Course > Subjects Career: Think about the type of career in which you can see yourself working. Course: Look at the courses that offer training in these careers. Subjects: Think about the subjects you enjoy most and are good at. If you think about a career in this way, it will help you work out which subjects you should be thinking about studying in VCE. Don t worry; you don t have to make a decision all by yourself. There are lots of people, places and publications that can help you. Talking to people There s a wealth of information right on your doorstep. Start with your Careers Teacher who can give you lots of information about tertiary study. Teachers, family members or friends can also put you in touch with people who work in careers you might be interested in. 3 Making sense of unusual VCE words and phrases When commencing VCE studies, it will take you some time to understand these new phrases, terms and requirements. Although confusing at first, these words will become familiar to you as you progress through years 11 and 12. ATAR (Australian Tertiary Admission Rank) The ATAR is not a mark or score. It is a ranking you receive from your VCE studies. ATAR is the abbreviation for Australian Tertiary Admission Rank and is based on an overall ranking of your performance against other year 12 students in the same year (in Victoria it used to be called ENTER). VTAC (Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre) VTAC acts on behalf of participating universities and TAFE institutions, facilitating the entry of new students into courses in Victoria. Degree (Higher Education) Degree courses are also called bachelor or undergraduate courses. They generally involve study for a minimum of and provide a professional qualification. TAFE (Technical and Further Education) or VET (Vocational Education and Training) TAFE or VET courses are very practical and include apprenticeship and traineeship training, certificates, diplomas, advanced diplomas and applied degrees. These qualifications provide you with specific skills for employment at paraprofessional and professional levels, as well as pathways into further study. Successful completion of VCE Successful completion of VCE, IB, or the VCAL entry may be considered for some courses. Please contact Federation University Australia directly to discuss your VCAL entry options on or info@federation.edu.au Open Days Tertiary institutions will open their doors to the public on Open Day in order to showcase their courses and opportunities. If you re trying to choose the right university and course for you, then attend Open Days and explore the campus. Talk to teaching staff and students about all the courses, and find out information about fees, accommodation, student association activities and student facilities. Other activities include campus tours, information sessions and a variety of entertainment. Open Access FedUni operates a selection model called Open Access for many of its courses (programs). Entry into an Open Access program is based on an applicant meeting the prerequisites, rather than a minimum Australian Tertiary Admissions Rank (ATAR). For secondary students, this means that, provided you have met the prerequisites of your chosen program of study, your ATAR is not a factor in our decision to offer a place at FedUni. Prerequisite A prerequisite is a subject you need to complete in order to be eligible for a course. Having the appropriate prerequisites will ensure that you have the knowledge to study particular subjects at tertiary level. All courses in the VTAC Guide will have their prerequisite studies clearly identified Selection Requirements When applying for a specific course, Selection/ Extra Requirements are tasks that you need to complete in addition to your VTAC application. You may need to attend an audition or interview, or fill in an additional form. Selection Requirements are listed in the VTAC Guide under the relevant course entry and it is mandatory that you meet these requirements to be considered for a course. Tertiary Study Studies undertaken at a higher level than secondary schooling. Tertiary Study in most cases will refer to studies at university level. Further Study Any study undertaken at a higher level than secondary schooling. Orientation Week (O-Week) O-Week helps you to begin your life as a new university student. It usually takes place on campus up to two weeks before your course starts. You will meet lots of new people and get all the important things done, like attending enrolment sessions, paying fees, going on tours and workshops and social activities. It s a great way to meet new friends and get to know your new campus. FEDERATION UN IVERSITY AUSTRALIA TERTIARY EN TRY GUIDE

4 TAFE or University: What s the difference? There are many types of courses to choose from. It is important to know the difference so that you can make sure you are looking at the right type! FedUni TAFE Areas of study at FedUni include: Automotive: Mechanical Heavy/Light Vehicle, Automotive Technology. Building & Construction: Building Design, Plumbing, Carpentry, Joinery and Furniture Making, Painting and Decorating, Building Surveying, Bricklaying and Electrotechnology. Human and Children s Services: Early Childhood Education and Care, Alcohol and Other Drug Work, Mental Health Work, Community Services Work, Disability Work. Information Technology: General, Multimedia, Websites. Rural: Horticulture, Conservation and Land Management, Agriculture including short courses. The main difference between TAFE and Uni is the type of course you will study. At FedUni, we call our courses programs. Our TAFE programs are Certificates, Diplomas and Advanced Diplomas. Most Certificate programs run from 6 months to in duration. If you combine them with working, such as in an apprenticeship or traineeship, you may study a certificate over 3-. Diplomas and Advanced Diplomas usually run from up to 2.5 years. TAFE training tends to be very practical and hands-on and is designed to get you into the workforce, or to give you a pathway to further study. At university, you will study a degree which is usually called an undergraduate or a bachelor degree. These normally run for at least. Depending on the program, they can run for up to 5 or 6 years. An undergraduate degree will prepare you for a profession or for further study. However, to enter some professions, you may need a postgraduate qualification. In other words, another program after you have finished your degree. These will normally be called graduate or postgraduate. So make sure that when you are looking for your first program at uni, it is an undergraduate or bachelor qualification. At FedUni we have both TAFE and degree programs. All of our undergraduate degree programs are listed in this book, but only some of the TAFE ones. So when you are doing your research, be sure to go to our website federation.edu.au to find out more about all of our programs. Pathways You might not always be able to go straight from school to your dream program. This diagram explains how programs fit together to get you where you want to go. After deferring studies to travel overseas, I resumed studies in the Bachelor of Business/Marketing at the Mt Helen Campus. The decision to study at FedUni in Ballarat was partly influenced by a group of boys a year ahead of me at school who studied at FedUni. They only ever had good things to say about it, so I decided to go to Ballarat too. I really enjoy the social side of Uni life there and it s a lot cheaper to be in Ballarat. I m not sure where my qualification will take me, but I am 100 percent motivated to finishing my studies and getting a great job. 6 FEDERATION UN IVERSITY AUSTRALIA TERTIARY EN TRY GUIDE 201 8

Studying psychology was a way for me to better understand what makes people tick and why they do the things they do. When choosing where I wanted to study, I liked the idea of coming to a regional university and not living in the city. Ballarat is just the right size not big enough to get lost whilst offering all the major shops and services I need. I also liked the idea of small class sizes and not just feeling like a number. In regards to career goals, the sky is the limit for me! I m hoping to continue onto honours, masters and upgrade to a Clinical Doctorate. This will give me the capacity to continue in research, which I love, and perform clinical work. I feel I am able to realise my artistic ideas through the course s structure, and produce works that I am proud of. The most amazing discovery I ve made as an art student is the many ideas, passions and beliefs that I have can be communicated through my works. The best piece of advice I can give to a student starting first year at art school is to come with an open mind - it is totally different to high school, but it s easy to adapt if you are able to take new ideas on board. I am planning to follow up my Bachelor of Visual Arts with an education postgraduate course and teach art within schools. FEDERATION UN IVERSITY AUSTRALIA TERTIARY EN TRY GUIDE

The great thing about placement is you have a variety of areas you can work in and you get practical experience. FEDERATION UN IVERSITY AUSTRALIA TERTIARY EN TRY GUIDE
