UDL and Considerations for STEM Education James (Jamie) Basham, Ph.D., University of
Today s Core Points.. 1. STEM education is about interdisciplinary thinking. 2. Universal Design for Learning (UDL) is a powerful framework for helping us decide on tools and strategies for supporting STEM education.
What is STEM Education? S
Globally... Call for higher performance of ALL students in STEM contents areas and associated skills. Importance of STEM fields for economical development. Importance of STEM related to global citizenship and social betterment (Basham et al. 2010)
What is Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM)... More than the subjects that make up the acronym Used to increase access to learning and the 21 st Century skills for ALL students. Focused on science and math with an integration of literacy, technologies, and engineering. Student-centered, collaborative, and is process-driven (See Basham, Israel, & Maynard 2010)
Applied STEM is Critical Thinking Applied Content Authentic Learning Collaboration Problem Solving Design Applied Examples.. Problem-Based Learning Project-Based Learning Challenge-Based Learning
Connecting the Pieces Through UDL...
UDL, it s more than simply technology. It s about design.
UDL is about Purposeful and proac1ve Design for Suppor1ng Learner Variability 2. The use of instruc1onal design, instruc1onal strategies, and materials (including technology) for overcoming barriers. 3. Sustainable itera1ve design. Becoming a Learning Engineer...

Evidence that ALL four Critical Elements are present in order to be aligned with UDL X X X X Clear Goals! Intentional Planning for Learner Variability! Flexible Methods & Materials! Timely Progress Monitoring
UDL Instruction Planning Process Step 1: Establish Clear Outcomes Step 2: Anticipate Learner Variability Step 3: Measurable Outcomes and Assessment Plan Step 4: Instructional Experience Step 5: Reflection and New Understandings
Annotated for Handout The rest of this slideshow provides a list of tools and resources for supporting STEM education. It s important to think about how any strategy, tool, and/or resource might be used in the actual design as well as implementation of a learning environment. Steps for Considering Integrating Strategies & Tools: Download and use the UDL Instructional Planning Process ( udl-irn.org/) for unit/learning session planning. Download the UDL Guidelines ( example on next page). Use the guidelines to proactively think about learner variability, barriers, and other design considerations within your unit, lesson, and/or environment.
How: Strategies & Tools Considering Strategies and Tools? 1. Use the guidelines & checkpoints under each principle to identify the potential variability, associated barriers, & design considerations. 2. Then decide how you might use strategies & tools to proactively design to meet these needs.
