5 5 OVERVIEW INTRODUCTION TheUniversityofDenver(DUislocatedinDenver,Colorado,ametropolitanareaandthe largestcitywithina500bmileradius.foundedin1864,duistheoldestprivateuniversityinthe RockyMountainregionandisfullyaccreditedbytheNorthCentralAssociation.Located"amile high,"theuniversityis10minutesfromdowntowndenver,anhourineachdirectionfrom BoulderandColoradoSprings,andlessthanhalfanhourfromtheRockyMountains. TheDoctorofPsychologyprogramintheGraduateSchoolofProfessionalPsychology(GSPP wasfoundedin1976andreceiveditsinitialamericanpsychologicalassociation(apa accreditationin1979.thepsychologyinternshipprogramattheuniversityofdenver CounselingCenterwasestablishedin1984andwasgrantedaccreditationbytheAPAin1990. In1998,theinternshipmovedtoanexclusivelyaffiliatedmodelwiththeGSPP,andtransitioned toaconsortiummodelin2001.theconsortiumwasgrantedfull,sevenbyearapaaccreditation in2005. INTERNSHIPSITES DenverChildren shome DenverChildren shome(dchistheoldestnonbprofitagencyinthestateofcolorado.they serveanaverageofover100childrenandfamiliesdailyandover1,000childrenandfamiliesin thecommunityannually.thedchmissionistorestorehopeandhealthtotraumatizedchildren andfamiliesthroughacomprehensivearrayoftherapeutic,educational,andcommunitybbased services.theagencyoffersavarietyofprograms,including:residentialtreatment,day Treatment,IntensiveInbHome,Outreach/Outpatient,LIFEDualDiagnosis,FamilyResource Center,andDiagnosticAssessment.DCHalsohasanonbsitefullyaccreditedschool,Bansbach Academy,whichservesallofthechildrenintheResidentialandDayTreatmentPrograms. DCHserveschildrenandadolescentsbetweentheages10to18(theIntensiveInbHomeProgram servingbirthto18byearsboldandtheirfamilies.thoseenteringtheprogramsareoftenincrisis andneedtreatmentasaresultofexperiencingseveretrauma,severementaloremotional disorders,violentoutbursts,attemptedsuicide,anger,truancy,druguse,andotherdestructive behaviorsthathavemadeitimpossibleforthemtodeveloptheskillsnecessaryforlearningor
6 6 functioninginthecommunity.childrenbenefitfromabroadrangeoftreatmentservices available,including:individualtherapyandcounseling,affectiveeducation,assessment,crisis intervention,advocacy,skillstraining,academicremediationandtherapeuticrecreational services.allservicesarecoupledwithfamilytherapytoresolveidentifiedproblemsinthehome andwithinteractionsbetweenthefamilyandthechildthatcontributetothechild sissue(sof focus.variousexperientialtherapiesarealsousedtosupplementtraditionaltherapy treatments,suchas:yoga,art,equine,andpet.theultimategoalistoreturnboththechildand thefamilytoahealthierleveloffunctioning.allofthisoccursviaamultidisciplinaryteamof professionalsandparaprofessionalswhoprovidespecializedservicesandwhoseintegration takesplaceunderthedirectionofaprogramtreatmentleader. DCHoffersonefullbtimeinternshippositionfor40hours/weekfortheentireinternshipyear. Primaryrolesandresponsibilitiesoftheinterninclude: Clinical:Internswillprimarilyserveasapsychotherapistforchildrenandfamilieswhoare enrolledinvariousprograms(residential,daytreatment,inbhome,outpatient,lifedual Diagnosis,andSchoolOnly.Theywillattendallrelevantteamandclinicalmeetings,inaddition tosupervisionmeetings.theywillalsorunmonthlystaffingmeetingsforeachclientontheir caseload.internswillbeexpectedtorunanongoinggroup,thetopicofwhichcanbegeared towardtheirinterestsanddeterminedbasedonclientneedandsupervisorapproval.case managementisarequirementforallclinicalcases,asiscrisisinterventionandfrequent communicationwithvariousstaffmembersinternallyandexternallytodch.clinicalworkis expectedtotakebetween25b30hoursoftheweek. Assessment:Internswillalsobeexpectedtocompleteavarietyofassessments(educational, personalityandadaptivefunctioningthroughouttheyear.assessmentswillincludetest administration,scoringandreportwriting,aswellasprovidingfeedbacktoparents,thechild, thetreatmentteamandthoseoutsidedchwhoarealsoinvolvedinthecase(i.e.,gal, caseworker,schooldistrictrepresentative,etc..assessmentsarecloselysupervisedand reportsarethorough.assessmentsupervisionisprovidedindividually(anaverageof3hours percase;moreisprovidedperrequestoftheinternandbasedonthenatureofthecase,and mayalsooccurinagroupformat.assessmentworkisexpectedtotakeapproximately10b15 hoursperweek. KaiserPermanenteColorado KaiserPermanenteisanintegratedhealthcaredeliverysystemoperatedbyKaiserFoundation HealthPlanofColoradoandtheColoradoPermanenteMedicalGroup,P.C.,whichtogether haveprovidedcomprehensivehealthcaretokaiserpermanentecoloradomemberssincejuly, 1969.ColoradoPermanenteMedicalGroupphysiciansprovidehealthcareforKaiser Permanentemembers.KaiserPermanenteisColorado'soldestandlargestgrouppractice healthcareorganization,with515,000membersinthesixbcountydenver/bouldermetropolitan areaandsoutherncoloradoservicearea. KaiserPermanenteofferstwofullbtimeinternshippositionseachyear,bothfocusingon generalistpractice.thepatientpopulationconsistsofchildren,adolescents,adults,couplesand families.internswilltypicallyseepatientswithabroadrangeofagesandpresentingproblems. Thesplitbetweenadultandchildorientedtherapycanvaryaccordingtointerestsoftheintern, butinternswillnotseeeitherchildoradultpatientsexclusively.
7 7 ThemissionofKaiserPermanente sbehavioralhealthdepartmentistoprovidequality, culturallysensitive,behavioralhealthservicestomembers.thegoalistoprovidetreatment thatiseffective,medicallynecessary,andefficienttoensuretheappropriateuseofthe department sresources.althoughmanyofthepatientsaretreatedusingashortbterm,goalb orientedapproach,avarietyofapproachesarepossible,basedontheneedsofeachpatient. KaiserPermanente sbehavioralhealthdepartmentprovidescareforbothacuteandchronic conditions.thegrouppracticemodel(includingtherapists,physicians,nursesandintensive services/crisisteamsdeliversserviceswithinateamapproach.dependingonpatientneeds,a mentalhealththerapistmaycollaboratewithapsychiatrist,withthecrisisteam,withchemical dependency,andsometimeswiththebehavioralmedicinespecialistorprimarycarephysician inthemedicaloffices.thiscollaborationisfacilitatedthroughthesharedelectronicmedical recordsystematkaiserpermanente.treatmentstrategieswilltargetpresentdifficulties,with thegoalsofpatientsreachingasatisfactoryleveloffunctioningandmaintainingactivitiesof dailyliving.aspartofanintegratedcaresystemandtheteamapproach,anemphasisisplaced oncommunicationandcollaborationwithothertreatmentproviderswithintheorganization. TheinternshipatKaiserPermanenteconsistsofamajorrotationinoneoftheoutpatientclinics and3b4minorrotations.residentsworktwo8bhourdaysandtwo10bhourdayseachweek. Theydividethistimewith28hoursforthemajorrotationand8hoursfortheminorrotation. Mostminorrotationsareonequarter.Theoptionscurrentlyofferedfortheminorrotation include:behavioralmedicinespecialist(twoquartersspentinoneofkaiserpermanente s MedicalOffices,chemicaldependency,eatingdisorders,geropsych,painprogram,andautism program.aminorrotationinintensiveoutpatient/crisisservicesisapossibility. LegacyComprehensiveCounselingandConsulting LegacyCenterwasestablishedin2010andislocatedinParker,CO.Legacy steamincludes licensedpsychologists,licensedclinicalsocialworkers,licensedprofessionalcounselors,and registeredpsychotherapistsworkingtowardscoloradostatelicensure.legacycenterprovides competent,ethical,andevidencebbasedpsychotherapytochildren,adolescentsandadults.a particularfocusincludesconductingdevelopmentalevaluationstoassistinearlyidentification ofdisabilitiesandtoprovideappropriatefollowbuptreatmentorreferralsfortreatmentand services. Legacyspecializesinprovidingcomprehensivediagnosticevaluationstoassessforthepresence ofautismspectrumdisorders,adhd,intellectualdisabilities,mixeddevelopmentaldelays, LearningDisabilities,andMoodDisorders.Gifted&Talentedevaluationsarealsoprovidedat LegacyCenter.Theinternwillalsobeinvolvedwithpsychologicaltestingformoodandanxiety disorders.theinternwillreceivesupervisionandtrainingonallassessmentsusedatlegacy Center,whichincludebutarenotlimitedto:BayleyScalesofInfantDevelopment,WIPPSIb IV/WISCbIV/WAISbIV,ADOSb2,ADIbR,NEPSYb2,VinelandbII,LeiterbR,CPT,WoodcockJohnsonTest ofacademicachievement,woodcockbjohnsontestsofcognitiveabilities,robertsb2,million, andparentb,selfb,andteacherbreportmeasures.further,legacycoordinatestreatmentservices withthemedicalcommunitytoprovidemorecomprehensivetreatmentplansforpatientsand theirfamilies.legacyisdedicatedtoprovidingmultidisciplinaryassessmentsandtreatmentfor children.specifically,legacywilleitherprovideorcoordinatethefollowingtreatmentfromthe followingproviders:childpsychologist,masterleveltherapists,pediatricians,speech pathologists,occupationaltherapists,schoolpsychologists,andpsychiatrists.
8 8 LegacyCenteralsospecializesinworkingwithindividualswithAutism,includingdiagnostic evaluationsandappliedbehaviortherapy(aba.legacy steamofprovidersincludesclinicians whospecializeindevelopmentalpsychologyandwhoareboardcertifiedbehavioranalysts. ABAfocusesontheimprovementandunderstandingofsociallysignificanthumanbehaviorthat canbemeasuredandobserved.inordertoaddressbehavioralneedsacrosssetting,legacyaba cliniciansprovidedirectabaservicesinthenaturalsettingofthechildandfamily,includingthe homeandschoolsettings. Legacyprovidesadditionaltherapeuticservicesforchildren,adolescents,andadultsincluding individualtherapy,grouptherapy,andfamilytherapy.someofthegrouptherapyofferedat LegacyCenterincludessocialskillsgroup,selfbesteemandempowermentgroups,parenting supportgroupsofchildrenwhohavebeendiagnosedwithadevelopmentaldisability,becoming alove&logicparentclasses,andparentbchildinteractiontherapy. AuniquetreatmentofferedatLegacyCenterisParentbChildInteractionTherapy(PCIT.PCIT wasinitiallytargetedforfamilieswithchildrenages2btob7withoppositional,defiant,andother externalizingbehaviorproblems.ithasbeenadaptedsuccessfullytoservephysicallyabusive parentswithchildrenages4btob12.pcitmaybeconductedwithparents,fosterparents,or othersinaparental/caretakerrole.pcitisanevidencedbbasedtreatmentmodelwithhighly specified,stepbbybstep,livebcoachedsessionswithboththeparent/caregiverandthechild. ParentslearnskillsthroughPCITdidacticsessions,and,usingatransmitterandreceiversystem, theparent/caregiveriscoachedinspecificskillsasheorsheinteractsinspecificplaywiththe child.generally,thetherapistprovidesthecoachingfrombehindaonebwaymirror.the emphasisisonchangingnegativeparent/caregiverbchildpatterns.treatmentgenerallylasts12b tob20weeksandismasterybbasedratherthantimelimited. LegacyCenteroffersonefullbtimeinternshipposition.Primaryrolesandresponsibilitiesinclude conductingcomprehensiveevaluationstoassessforthepresenceofautismspectrum Disorders,ADHD,IntellectualDisabilities,MixedDevelopmentalDelays,LearningDisabilities, andmooddisorders.theinternwillbeexpectedtocompleteonaverageoneto1.5evaluations perweek.additionally,theinternwillalsobeexpectedcarry7to10individualcounseling clients.theinternwillcobleadandeventuallyindependentlyleadacounselinggroup.further, theinternwillattendallrelevantteam,supervision,staffing,andclinicalmeetings.lastly,the InternwillsuperviseoneExternfor9to12monthsonaweeklybasis. MentalHealthCenterofDenver TheMentalHealthCenterofDenver(MHCDisthelargestcommunitymentalhealthcenterin theregion,serving10,000+consumerseachyear,mostwithaseriousandpersistentmental illness.however,individualswhohaveinsurancearealsoabletoaccessourservices.theclient baseisrepresentativeoftheculturaldiversityindenvercounty.mhcdservestheentireage range;fromtherightstartprogramthatservesages0 5toourgeriatricprogramsthathelpthe elderlypopulation.mhcdemploysmorethan700professionalsofmanydifferentareasof expertise(suchaspsychiatrists,psychologists,neuropsychologists,licensedprofessional counselors,licensedsocialworkers,nurses,casemanagersetc..mhcdoffersservicesinmore than30locationsthroughoutdenver(includingmultipleoutpatientclinicssuchasadult RecoveryCenter,TheDahliaCampusforHealthandWellBeing,andWellshire;approximately 23residentialfacilities;4communitybbasedagenciesservingthehomeless;10publicschools; vocationalprograms;inbhomecareforfamilies;andnursinghomeservices.
9 9 ThemissionoftheMentalHealthCenterofDenveristobeacenterofexcellenceinserviceto thoseinthecountyofdenverwhohaveaseriousandpersistentmentalillness,andwhoare membersoftheunderservedcommunityofdenver.mostoftheindividualsweservehavean AxisImentalhealthdiagnosis;areonMedicaid,ChildHealthPlusorhavenoinsurance.MHCD s goalistoenrichthelivesoftheseindividualsbyfocusinguponstrengths,recovery,and wellbeing.thementalhealthcenterofdenveralsostrivestobearesourcetothegreater communityofdenverthroughvariousgrantprograms,outreachprograms,andvocational programs.inaddition,mhcdhopestocontinuallymakeapositivecontributiontoother agenciesandorganizationsinthecommunitythrougheducationandcollaboration.themental HealthCenterofDenveralsohasseveralfeeforservicementalhealthclinics,addressing psychiatricmedicationmanagement,chronicdepressionwithtranscranialmagneticstimulation treatment,andpsychologicalassessment. MHCDofferstwofullbtimeinternshippositionseachyear:onechild/familytrackpositionand oneadulttrackposition. Majorrotations:Thechild/familytrackinternwillbeplacedattheWestFederalChild&Family Centerand/orTheDahliaCampusforHealthandWellbeing(toopenapproximatelyin November2015andtheadulttrackinternwillbeplacedattheAdultRecoveryCenter.The majorrotationsareapproximately20hrs/weekfortheentireinternshipyear.clinicalservices onmajorrotationsinclude:intakes;individual,groupand/orfamilytherapy;andoutreach services.internsareanimportantpartoftheinterdisciplinaryteam,whichiscomprisedof psychiatrists,nurses,psychologists,therapists,casemanagersetc.internsattendallstaffings andteamevents,iftheirschedulepermits. PsychologicalAssessment:Theinternswillcomplete5hoursperweekofpsychologicaltesting throughouttheyearandwillcompleteaminimumof8fullbatterieswithwrittenreports.the assessmenthoursinvolvetestadministration,scoring,reportbwriting,andfeedbacksessionwith clientandtreatmentteam(ifavailable.itisexpectedthatapplicantswillhavestrongprojective, cognitiveandpersonalitytestingskillsandwillhavetakenthecognitive,projectiveand personalityassessmentclassesofferedatthegspp(includingrorschachexperience. Neuropsychologyinterestand/orexperienceisaplusbutnotarequirement. Minorrotations:Theinternswilleachchoosepreferableonesecondaryrotationthatwillbeten hoursperweekforthedurationoftheirtrainingyear.however,ifthesecondaryrotationis amenabletoasixbmonthrotation,theinternmaypossiblychoosetwosecondaryrotations.
