9 9 Information about Nepal Climate and Clothing Bring lightweight cottons and linens and a waterproof raincoat. Warmer clothing, including a thick sweater and a fleece-type garment are recommended for the evenings except at the warmest time of the year. During the winter, days are warm, but evenings and early mornings are surprisingly cool, especially in the hills at altitudes above 7,000 feet. Electricity Mains voltage in Nepal is 220 volts AC (50 Hz). A wide variety of electrical sockets is in use, including European two-pin and 5-amp and 15- amp three-pin designs, so we recommend that you bring a multi-standard adaptor. Power cuts are more frequent in Nepal, although many hotels have their own generators so guests are not unduly inconvenienced. Due to power surges, we recommend that you only charge electrical equipment that is fitted with a surge protector. The use of portable immersion water heaters is not permitted as they are considered to be a fire hazard. Food and drink All water should be regarded as being potentially contaminated. You are therefore advised to drink only bottled water or soft drinks. If you are on a special diet, please speak to your representative at the beginning of your holiday or trekking leader. He or she will then try to arrange for an alternative dishes, wherever possible. Extra cash will be beard by you. Health we request that you bring the name, address and telephone number of your GP, as this is usually required by insurance companies incase anything goes wrong. In Kathmandu you can experience serious air pollution during spells of long hot weather. This creates a haze above the city, which can cause sore throats and eyes. People suffering from chest or respiratory, bronchial, asthma, chest or emphysema problems should seek medical advice before travelling. Flying insects, including mosquitoes, are common so we suggest you to wear longsleeved, long-legged clothes and use mosquito repellents on exposed areas of skin. Holidays Holidays are celebrated in January (National Unity Day); March (Nepalese Women s Day); April (Ram Nawami - birthday of Lord Ram); August (Rakshya Bandhan - Janai Purnima, Gai Jatra and Krishna Asthami - Birthday of Lord Krishna), September (Teej - for women only and Indra Jatra - Festival of Rain God), October (Dasain - Durga Puja Festival and Deepawali - Festival of Lights) and November (Constitution Day). Various other Hindu festivals are celebrated: the dates are set by astronomical observations, and vary from one year to another. Language The official language is Nepali, but several other languages and dialects are spoken, including Sherpa, Tamang and Gurung. English is widely understood by people working in the tourism industry.

10 10 Money The currency unit is the Nepalese rupee (NR), divided into 100 paisa. Notes are issued for NR 1000, 500, 100, 50, 25, 20, 10, 5, 2 and 1. Coins are in the denominations of NR 5, 2, 1 and 50 and 25 paisa. It is illegal to exchange your currency with persons other than authorised dealers in foreign exchange. You should keep all the receipts obtained when changing money, as you will need to show them if you need to change surplus rupees back at the end of your holiday. You will only be able to convert 15% of the total amount of rupees exchanged during your stay in Nepal back into hard currency when you leave. It is advisable, therefore, to change only a small amount at a time, so as not to be left with rupees you cannot use. Please save any exchange receipts as you will need these when re changing money. Visa and MasterCard credit cards are widely accepted; American Express and Diners may be accepted in Kathmandu. Debit cards are less widely accepted than credit cards. Please check with your card company for details of merchant acceptability and other services. A 3% bank surcharge is sometimes levied on credit-card payments. Some traders accept your currency or US dollars in cash, although it almost invariably works out cheaper to pay in rupees. Shopping The opportunity to purchase local crafts, clothing and gifts is one of the great delights of travelling abroad and buying local not only means you have something authentic to take home, it also means your money goes to the right people. However, it almost goes without saying that travellers need to be vigilant and use their discretion when making purchases. If in doubt, you should consult your tour operator/ representative for advice. Many dealers advertise a shipping service, but this may only include handling and shipping as far as the first point of entry to your home country. Further costs can include fees for import handling, haulage costs, import service fees, Customs clearance fees and VAT. Your travel agency cannot be held responsible for faults or problems with purchases made on holiday. Smoking Smoking has recently been banned in enclosed public spaces, although some venues may still permit smoking and we cannot guarantee a smokefree atmosphere. Please check with your tour manager or local guide if you have any queries. During the trekking you re requested not smoke in the Yeti Mountain Home lodges. Passports and security It is a good idea to take a photocopy of the pages of your passport showing your passport number and photograph. Bring this with you on holiday, but keep it in a different place from your passport, so that you will still have it even if your passport is lost or stolen. Time Nepal is +5:45 hours ahead of GMT. Tipping While all basic service charges have been included in your holiday cost, you may wish to leave a tip for good service. Gratuities to your

11 11 tour manager, local guides and coach drivers are left to your own discretion. Tipping is appreciated by drivers, guides and hotel staff, with 10% the usual rate (only hotel).
