6 1 Chairman Plataforma Tecnológica Española de la Carretera (PTC) Spanish Road Technology Platform Managing Director Plataforma Tecnológica Española de la Carretera (PTC) Spanish Road Technology Platform Road infrastructures have always played a key role in the progress and economic growth of any nation, both through the direct impact of a higher mobility to citizens and goods and through the indirect benefits derived from building infrastructure. 4

7 2 nd dition anuary 2012 FOREWORD Today the global road sector faces important technological challenges which will influence the future road system, in particular in connection to ITS & Mobility, Safety, Materials, Energy & Sustainability, Environment and Transport & Co-modality. In the case of Spain, the development of a modern road network coupled time-wise with a substantial increase of the socioeconomic conditions enjoyed by Spanish citizens, and this fact made the role played by road networks self-evident to the Spanish society. Since then, the Spanish road industry has grown exponentially and become a global leader, as it is transferring its knowledge and expertise in planning, building, equipping and operating road networks all across the world. The Who s Who in Spanish Road Infrastructure Technology compiles the recent achievements of the Spanish road infrastructure sector from a scientific and technological perspective. More than 50 organizations and 220 experts have participated in its elaboration, an effort which has mainly consisted of identifying the achievements already made by the Spanish industry, academia and public authorities towards addressing the global challenges mentioned above. On behalf of the Spanish Road Technology Platform, we hope you find this publication instrumental to find the right expertise and partnership within the Spanish road sector. January

8 2 For this 2nd edition of the Who s Who in Spanish Road Infrastructure Technology, two classification criteria have been taken into account to allow readers and flexible and quick search for information. First, the organizations active in R&D have been classified by both alphabetical and thematic order. In addition to the usual information available in a regular directory (contact person, position, coordinates...), the publication provides a full R&D profile which includes a description of the organization s R&D activities, the equipment and material resources available to these activities, the managers and technicians engaged in R&D, the R&D projects already completed or in progress, etc. The organization has also been classified into one or several of the 10 thematic areas that describe its activity within the sector: Design and Planning, Construction, Management and Operation, Maintenance, ITS and Mobility, Road Safety, Materials, Energy and Sustainability, Environment and Transport and Co-modality. 6

These projects and initiatives have been organized according to the terminology used by the Working Groups of the Spanish Road Technology Platform: ITS and Mobility, Road Safety, Materials, Energy and Sustainability, Environment and Transport and Co-modality. 7

10 3 The Plataforma Tecnológica Española de la Carretera (PTC), the Spanish Road Technology Platform, is the official discussion forum promoted by the Spanish Ministry for Science & Innovation for all Science-Technology-Enterprise stakeholders with a significant role in the promotion of employment, competitiveness and growth of Spanish road infrastructures. Today more than 50 organizations and 220 experts participate in its activities. Since its public launch in February 2010, the Platform: a) Defines a strategic vision for technological activities in the Spanish road sector. b) Stimulates stakeholder cooperation by optimizing existing R&D investments and promoting new R&D projects. c) Builds R&D working guidelines and long-term priorities, in cooperation with national and international bodies. d) Encourages knowledge transfer and good-practice exchange.
