1 Public Works Engineering Technician: Speciality Civil Constructions FIRST YEAR PHYSICAL BASES OF ENGINEERING Core 1st 1st semester Rational mechanics. Wave phenomena. Electricity. Thermodynamics. Classes on theory and problems. Laboratory practicals. Students will be assessed by means of a final exam on the theoretical and practical course content and an exam on the lab practicals. The exams will count towards 80% and 20% of the final grade, respectively. MATHEMATICAL BASES OF ENGINEERING Core 1st 1st semester Linear algebra. Infinitesimal calculus. Integration. Differential equations. Statistics. Numerical methods. Theoretical and practical classes. will be based chiefly on practical exams which may also contain questions on theory. There will be two mid-term exams. The first will be held in December in which students may eliminate material, while the second will be held in February coinciding with the final exam.
2 TECHNICAL DRAWING AND REPRESENTATION SYSTEMS Core 1st 1st semester Drawing techniques. Photogrammetry and cartography. Topography. Theoretical classes and practical classes dedicated to the resolution of exercises individually and/or in groups on the main topics seen in the theoretical classes. of problems handed in during the course and a written exam with problems related to the course content. ECONOMICS Core 1st 1st semester General and applied economics. Evaluation. Theoretical and practical classes, class presentations. Written multiple-choice exam and problem resolution. GEOLOGY Core 1st 1st semester Soil mechanics. Applied geology. Rock mechanics. Theoretical and practical lectures on the course content. From the practical viewpoint, students must know how to use a compass; measure strata orientation and dips; recognise diaclasses; visually recognise the principle rock types; interpret geological maps, stratigraphic sections and series; resolve simple problems related to structural geology. A written exam with a theoretical and a practical part.
3 MATERIALS SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY Core 1st 2nd semester Fundamentals of materials science and technology. Construction materials. Theoretical classes, laboratory practicals and resolution of numerical problems on topics related to practical cases studied during the course. Written exam with essay and multiple-choice questions as well as problems. CONSTRUCTION METHODS AND MACHINERY Core 1st 2nd semester Construction procedures and machinery. Organisation of civil works. Theoretical classes, resolution of numerical problems. Laboratory practicals. Written theoretical exam with multiple-choice questions and resolution of numerical problems. ORGANISATION Compulsory 1st 2nd semester Structure and analysis of organisations. Organisational models. Functions in an organisation. Theoretical and practical classes, oral presentations. Written exam with multiple-choice questions and problems.
4 ENGLISH Compulsory 1st 2nd semester Acquisition of comprehensive skills for the reading of technical texts in English. Theoretical and practical classes based on ESP (English for Specific Purposes). Written exam to assess the acquisition of English language skills as well as the manual titled Uso de la Lengua Inglesa y Traducción y ejercicios específicos del área (Obras Públicas y Minas) CHEMISTRY Compulsory 1st 2nd semester Chemical balance. Phase diagrams. Materials chemistry. Theoretical classes, seminars, laboratory practicals. Written exams on the theoretical and practical course content. SECOND YEAR TOPOGRAPHY Core 2nd 1st semester Drawing techniques. Photogrammetry and Cartography. Topography. Theoretical classes, field work and oral presentation of practical cases. The practical assignment is a Compulsory requirement of the course. Written exam with essay questions and problems. Attendance to the practical classes is Compulsory as is the practical class assignment.
5 THEORY OF STRUCTURES Core 2nd 1st semester Resistance of materials. Analysis of structures. Theoretical classes, problems, questions and oral presentation of practical cases. Written exam with essay questions and resolution of questions and problems. CIVIL ENGINEERING Core 2nd 1st semester Roads and airports. Railways. Factories and infrastructures. Theoretical classes, Laboratory practicals and resolution of numerical problems related to road construction. Written exam with essay questions and problems. HYDRAULICS Core 2nd 2nd semester Fluid mechanics. Hydraulics. Surface and subterranean hydrology. Theoretical classes, classroom practicals and laboratory practicals. Written exam with essay questions and problems.
6 HYDROLOGY Core 2nd 1st semester Fluid mechanics. Hydraulics. Surface and subterranean hydrology. The course will be structured around theoretical and practical classes. By the end of the course students will be required to know how to fill in gaps in incomplete pluviometric data series; detect and correct systematic and accidental errors in series; measure the rainfall of a given area; calculate the RET by means of the Thornwaite formula; determine river flow using flowmeters and discharge measurements using tracers; separate surface and underground water supply in a hydrogram; calculate maximum flood levels in small natural basins. A) FORMAL: Students will be assessed by means of tests on the cognitive area of the course. As this is a semester course, there will be a final written exam on the course content. B) INFORMAL: Students will be based on experimental and practical date related to the resolution of the above exercises. STRUCTURES TECHNOLOGY Core 2nd 2nd semester Analysis of structures. Reinforced and prestressed concrete. Metallic structures. Structural typology. Dynamic analysis of structures. Theoretical classes combined with classes in which students must resolve practical numerical exercises. Written exam with short theoretical or theoretical and practical questions and problems.
7 TOPOGRAPHICAL DRAWING Compulsory 2nd 2nd semester Topographical drawing techniques. Alignment geometry. Transition surfaces. Specific topographic maps. Theoretical classes and practical cases where students will resolve exercises individually or in group on the main topics seen in the theoretical classes. of problems seen during the course and a written exam on problems. ADVANCED MATHEMATICS Compulsory 2nd 1st semester Further knowledge of mathematical concepts. Classes on theory and problem solving. Students will be chiefly assessed by means of practical exams that may contain theoretical questions. MECHANICS AND MACHINE TECHNOLOGY Compulsory 2nd 2nd semester Extraction installations. Fluid circulation. Gravity. Pumping. Ventilation Compression. Theoretical and practical classes. Field trips to mining installations. Written exam with essay questions and problems.
8 SAFETY AND HYGIENE Compulsory 2nd 2nd semester Occupational risks in public works. Methods of prevention and control: their impact on the project. Risk assessment and control of hygiene. Theoretical classes and presentation of practical cases. Written exam with multiple-choice questions and problems. ELECTRIC TECHNOLOGY Core 2nd 1st semester Circuit theory. Electric machines. Electric power systems. Electric control systems. Theoretical classes, simulation methods and oral presentation of practical cases. Written exam with essay questions and problems. THIRD YEAR PROJECTS Core 3rd 1st semester Project methodology, organisation and management. Environmental impact: assessment and remediation. Theoretical classes, simulation methods and oral presentation of practical cases. Students will be assessed as follows: Written exam on the THEORETICAL CONTENT, written exam on the PRACTICAL CONTENT and the presentation of a written assignment on a PRACTICAL CASE. Each of the parts will be assessed on a scale of 1 to 10. The final grade for the course will be calculated as the average of the three parts provided that the student has passed each of the parts.
9 SOIL AND ROCK MECHANICS Core 3rd 1st semester Soil mechanics. Applied geology. Rock mechanics. Theoretical classes and presentation of practical cases. Written exam with multiple-choice questions and the resolution of practical cases. QUALITY CONTROL Core 3rd 2nd semester Construction procedures and machinery. Organisation of civil works. Theoretical and practical classes. Written exam on the theoretical and practical course content. RAILWAYS, CABLE CARS AND TUBE TRANSPORT Core 3rd 2nd semester Roads and airports. Railways. Factories and infrastructure projects. Theoretical and practical classes. Written exam on the theoretical and practical course content.
10 LEGISLATION Compulsory 3rd 1st semester General labour legislation and specific legislation for the sector. Theoretical and practical classes. The course will combine lectures with assignments on specific topics related to the course content. As this is a semester course students will only be given a final exam at the end of the course. Class attendance will be taken into account for purposes of final assessment. PLANNING, MEASURING AND ASSESSING WORKS Compulsory 3rd 2nd semester Legal and economic aspects of civil construction.. Planning systems. Theoretical and practical classes. Written exam on the theoretical and practical course content. REINFORCED AND PRESTRESSED CONCRETE Compulsory 3rd 1st semester Reinforced and prestressed concrete. Metallic structures. Theoretical classes combined with classes in which students must resolve practical numerical exercises. Written exam with short theoretical or theoretical and practical questions and problems.
11 MARINE WORKS Compulsory 3rd 2nd semester Swells, tides and currents. Ports: Typology and works. Coastal defence works. Theoretical and practical classes. Written exam on the theoretical and practical course content. TOPOGRAPHICAL METHODS AND UPLIFTING Compulsory 3rd 2nd semester Geodesy. Lambert projection. UTM projection. Polycentric projection. Study and terminology of aerial photographs. Flight plans. Field support. Topographic methods for projects. Theoretical classes, fieldwork and oral presentation of practical cases. The practical assignment is a Compulsory requirement of the course. Written exam with essay questions and problems. Attendance to the practical classes and the practical assignment are Compulsory. HYDRAULIC AND ENVIRONMENTAL SYSTEMS Compulsory 3rd 1st semester Open-channel and discharge networks. Pumping systems. Sanitation and supply networks. Use of hydroelectronics. Irrigation and drainage. Theoretical classes, practical sessions in the classroom and laboratory practicals. Written exam with essay questions and problems.
12 END-OF-DEGREE PROJECT Type Total Credits ECTS Credits Compulsory The degree must be completed with a final project whose aim is to integrate and summarise the knowledge acquired throughout the programme. Preparation and oral defence of a written paper before an examining board The project will be assessed by an examining board composed of three members. OPTIONAL S APPLIED GRAPHIC DESIGN Optional 1st and 2nd semester Geometry, using CAD for representation. Theoretical classes, practical classes in the computer lab where students will follow the drawing commands given by the course instructor with the aid of a video projector. Students will also be required to do individual exercises to integrate all the commands. of problems completed and handed in throughout the course and a practical exam to be conducted on the computer.
13 SURVEYING Optional 2nd semester Drawing. Linear construction projects. Elevation. Land movement. Phases in the execution of a project. Calculating and redefining concrete constructions. Theoretical classes, fieldwork and oral presentation of practical cases. The practical assignments are a compulsory requirement for the course. Written exam with essay questions and problems. Attendance to the practical sessions is compulsory as is the practical assignment. TECHNICAL ENGLISH Optional 2nd semester The aim of this course is to further student s knowledge of and practical skills in the English language. Students will be required to read and translate specific mining texts. Theoretical and practical classes using authentic texts downloaded from Internet. Written exam, homework and class assignments.
14 COMPUTER SCIENCE Optional 2nd semester Introduction to computer science. Theoretical and practical classes using the computer. 40% of the final grade will be based on exercises assigned in class and turned in to the course instructor as well as attendance to 80% of the credit hours. The remaining 60% will be based on the grade obtained on an exam to be given in the computer lab. The exam aims to evaluate the knowledge acquired by the students throughout the semester. WATER RESOURCES PLANNING AND MANAGEMENT Optional 1st semester Characterisation of use and demand. Administrative policy. Hydrological planning. Theoretical classes and practical sessions in the classroom and with the aid of a the computer. Written exam and oral presentation of a group assignment.
15 TECHNIQUES FOR MATERIALS CHARACTERISATION Optional 2nd semester Textural and structural characterisation of materials. X-ray diffraction. Electronic microscopy. EDAX. Thermal analysis (DTA, TGA). Atomic absorption. Gas absorption. Theoretical classes, seminars, lab practicals and computer lab practicals. Written exams on the theoretical and practical course content. REPRESENTATION IN CIVIL ENGINEERING Optional 1st semester 3.6 Graphic representation in civil works and infrastructures. Theoretical classes and practical classes consisting of the graphic representation of constructive details following a written. of problems completed during the course and handed in to the course instructor and oral presentations.
16 GEOPHYSICS FOR ENGINEERING Optional 2nd semester Geophysical prospecting methods. Tomography and high-resolution techniques for assessing rocky massifs. Detection of hollow cavities. Theoretical and practical classes, fieldwork and presentation of practical cases. Written exam with essay questions and exercises. LAND MOVEMENT Optional 1st semester Land movement. Theoretical and practical classes with fieldtrips to projects of interest. Presentation of an assignment prepared during the course. URBAN DEVELOPMENT AND THE ENVIRONMENT Optional 2nd semester Urban planning: concepts and instruments. Territorial planning. Ecosystems and environmental management. Environmental assessment and remediation. Theoretical classes and practical classroom sessions. Written exam.
17 HYDRAULIC WORKS Optional 2nd semester Channelling and defence works in rivers. Canals. Reservoir dams. Theoretical classes and practical sessions in the classroom with the aid of a computer. Written exam and oral presentation of a group assignment. DIGITAL AUTOMATION SYSTEMS Optional 2nd semester Analogue electronics. Digital electronics. Programmable automated systems. Theoretical classes, simulation techniques and oral presentation of practical cases. Class exercises and final project on automation systems. WATER ANALYSIS AND QUALITY. THE ENVIRONMENT Optional 2nd semester Chemical criteria of contamination. Determination of ions and contaminants. Theoretical classes, seminars, laboratory practicals. Written exams on the theoretical and practical course content.
18 GEOTECHNOLOGY AND ITS APPLICATIONS Optional 1st semester Rock and soil mechanics. Surveys, assays, test drilling and instrumentation. Tunnelling geomechanics. Mining and works planning. Slope and dam stability. Retention structures. Foundations and compaction. Geotechnology and explosives. Theoretical classes, fieldwork and oral presentation of practical cases.. Written exam with essay questions and problems. ECTS CREDITS The courses have been assigned ECTS Credits by proportionally calculating their duration in accordance with the corresponding programme of studies and taking into account that the programme has a total duration of three academic years or 180 ECTS Credits (60 ECTS credits per year)
