The campus is coming along nicely and I would especially like to commend our teachers for their preparation of the classrooms. I hope at this point, everyone is settling down into their routines of the school year. This is our first newsletter for the school year; the newsletter is published on a weekly basis and available online, in addition to being sent via . A paper copy can be requested at the front office. 2 KINDERGARTEN BIOS Our Kindergarten teachers are Ms. McGee, Ms. Menoff, Ms. White, and Ms. Yamnitz. Ms. Menoff I love owls, anything Disney, reading, and traveling. I spent two weeks in Italy this summer and I am still missing the food. This will be my 5 th year teaching Kindergarten and my first year teaching at Orlando Science Elementary School. I am originally from Illinois and moved to Florida once I completed college. After six years in Florida I am still trying to adjust to the heat! Ms. White I am a teacher who has taught for 5 years, loves creating a warm and welcoming classroom environment, and is passionate about seeing students make progress. I am also an animal enthusiast who enjoys going on walks with my husband and our two dogs, Rita and Hayworth. In addition to our two dogs, we have two four year old guinea pigs, Peanut and Pip, who make wonderful classroom pets! I am also an avid reader who enjoys reading fiction and nonfiction alike, and appreciates seeing students develop a passion for reading. 1 st GRADE BIOS Representing 1 st grade are teachers Ms. Morris, Ms. O Briant, Ms. Thomas, and Ms. Vale. Ms. O Briant I received my Bachelor s Degree from UCF (GO KNIGHTS!) in Elementary Education. I am also ESOL and Reading endorsed and Response to Intervention (RTI) Certified. Florida has been my home my whole life and I recently just got married to my college sweetheart. I love the gym, new foods, and am an advocate for an equal-learning-environment. I love to teach using research-based methods that utilize hands-on learning. Ms. Vale I have lived here in Florida my whole life. I am the eldest of three. I have a younger brother and sister. I love them but rarely get to see them. My parents are both artists and still live in the house where I grew up. I graduated from the University of Tampa with a degree in Elementary Education. I am certified through the State of Florida in Elementary Education (K-6) and ESOL endorsed. This is my first year teaching first grade at OSES and my 5 th year teaching elementary in general. Prior to coming to OSES I taught fifth grade math and kindergarten at Oakland Avenue Charter School. In my spare time I enjoy spending time with my husband, our 5-year-old daughter, Clara, and our chocolate lab, Project Alice.

3 2 nd GRADE BIOS Our 2 nd grade teachers are Ms. Knight, Ms. Nelson, Ms. Rourke, and Ms. Stangl. Ms. Stangl I received my undergraduate degree from Rollins College in Psychology with a minor in Creative Writing. After, I went on to the University of Central Florida for my Master s in Elementary Education. I traveled to London to receive a TESOL Certification and taught English in Poland and the Czech Republic. Professional Development and furthering my knowledge within the realm of education is an integral part of my teaching. My personal belief is that experience and education are two essential elements in life. Creativity, hands-on learning, and hard work are all part of my curriculum. Ms. Rourke This will be my 5 th year teaching elementary school and my third year at OSES. If I m not in the classroom, you can find me with my daughter, on the beach, or enjoying a good book. As your child s teacher I will work with them to discover his or her individual strengths, interests, and areas for growth and work with them to maximize their full potential. I believe that every child has the potential to excel when given the right tools. 4 THIRD GRADE TEACHERS BIO Ms. Atkinson I am a parent like you of an awesome third grader. He is my joy and greatest gift ever. I share this to let you know that I can empathize with you for any situation possible. We have great times in our family, volunteering at our church and being beach bums as much as possible on the weekends, but we work hard during the week to balance out our relaxation time. In the end, it is all worth it and we have something to work towards. As a parent, I use a system of rewards for hard work and good effort, which is similar to what I do in class as a teacher. Attending to your child s educational needs is my first and foremost role at OSES and I will use everything in my mental toolbox to prepare him or her for life as a third grader. Ms. Trujillo When I am not with my class/school family, my husband, children, and I are either at Disney World, my son s dojo, or at home preparing for the next day. I have been with my husband, James, since before I started my career in education. My daughter, Ellen, will be in tenth grade this year at OSS and my son, Zakk, will be in fifth grade just down the hall from me. Both of my children are very different and have specific interests and needs, which is why they attend OSS. Your child is unique and has his or her own interests and needs as well. I will do everything in my power to make sure your child learns, is challenged, and feels a sense of accomplishment when he or she leaves my classroom in June. Ms. Walton I am excited to be in my first year of teaching at OSES! I graduated from the University of North Alabama in Spring 2013 with a Bachelor of Science in Education degree. I enjoy outdoor activities, reading, and scrapbooking when I am not teaching. I am very enthusiastic about this school year and all the memories we will be making while learning. Third grade is an exciting year because your child will learn how to be responsible for their own learning and will be able to put their reading and writing skills to the test with real life problems. Ms. Wence I grew up in Pennsylvania and came down to Florida to go to UCF. I graduated in 2008 with a degree in interdisciplinary studies with concentrations in Education and Health & Biomedical science. I have previously taught first and second grades and am so excited to be teaching third grade this year. Third grade is an exciting time as children embark upon new adventures in the world of learning!

6 ORLANDO SCIENCE CENTER Our older students were lucky enough to start the school year off with a trip down the road to the Orlando Science Center. It was a great opportunity for them to get to know their classmates and teachers. It also sparked their curiosity and prepared them for the exciting year of learning they have ahead of them here at the new Orlando Science Elementary location.
