1 OIII INTERNATIONAL SYMP SIUM postharvestbari2015 III International Symposium on Using science to increase food availability programme Bari (Italy), 7-11 June 2015 Villa Romanazzi Carducci
2 Dipartimento di Scienze del Suolo della Pianta e degli Alimenti III International Symposium on Under the auspices of: ISPP Patrocinio dell Assessore alle Risorse Agroalimentari della Regione Puglia SIPaV 2
3 Dear Colleagues and Friends, On behalf of the Organizing and Scientific Committees, welcome to the III International Symposium on : Using Science to Increase Food Availability that is held under the patronage of the International Society for Horticultural Science (ISHS), the International Society of Plant Pathology (ISPP), the Italian Phytopathological Society (SIPaV), and Italian Association for Plant Protection (AIPP). Moreover, it is also under the auspices of Regione Puglia and Expo 2015, the Universal Exhibition (Milan, Italy, May 1 - October 31, 2015) in which more than 140 participating countries will try to offer a concrete answer to a vital need: being able to guarantee healthy, safe, and sufficient food for everyone, while respecting the Planet and its equilibrium. The first ISHS symposium was held in 2010, in Leesburg, VA, USA, and focused on the biological control of postharvest diseases. The second one was held in 2013 in Kusadasi, Turkey, and broadened the topic to include a variety of innovative new approaches to postharvest disease control. This third meeting further widens the focus, as it is held in collaboration with the Subject Matter Committee of the ISPP, who last met in 2011 in Lleida, Spain. In particular, the complex host-pathogen-biocontrol agent interaction is analysed even considering the role of the entire microbiome and of microbial toxic metabolites, which have a significance even for human health. Furthermore, attention is paid to the epidemiology and the early detection of diseases as fundamental prerequisite for an effective application of control means both singly or in an integrated approach that involves the whole productive chain. The goal of this series of symposia is to facilitate the exchange of knowledge, methods, technologies, and ideas among scientists, industry, producers, and retailers in order to develop effective, appropriate, and commercially viable approaches to postharvest disease management of fruit and vegetables. Demand for safe and nutritious produce is rapidly growing as the world population increases, and yields are threatened by global climate change. Hope you will appreciate the invited lectures, contributed oral and poster presentations, and social programme. You will have the occasion to enjoy the food, weather, history, friendly people, and the many attractions that Bari has to offer. Yours sincerely, Antonio Ippolito Convener Bari (Italy), 7-11 June
