4 Experimentally Driven future Internet R&D: State-of-the-art & Challenges Major experimentally driven future Internet research ini)a)ves FIRE, GENI, and AKARI. state- of- the- art and large- scale experimental facili)es across different technologies From op)cal and wireless network to data center infrastructure and cloud services Major challenges for these infrastructure : Providing a mechanism for efficient sharing of the infrastructure Ensuring experiments are run in complete separa)on without interfering with each other Infrastructure Flexibility Possibility to change the behavior of the infrastructure components (e.g. network elements) as part of the experiment. Currently, most of the exis)ng facili)es, either don t allow this at all or they allow it as part of the experiment setup
5 Possible Solution Cross layer virtualization Creation of multiple isolated virtual experimental infrastructures all sharing same physical infrastructure SW/HW defined networking Allows an experimenter to manipulate behavior of network elements belonging to his/her virtual infrastructure without interfering with other virtual infrastructures

12 OFELIA Vision Open Flow in Europe: Linking Infrastructure and Applica:ons OFELIA proposes a cross-layer infrastructure virtualization solution based on OpenFlow technology Creation of multiple isolated virtual experimental infrastructures all sharing same physical infrastructure Allows an experimenter to manipulate behavior of network elements belonging to his/her virtual infrastructure without interfering with other virtual infrastructures OFELIA provides the tools to create innovations for the future Internet OFELIA is enabling revolutionary Internet research in Europe OFELIA is creating a European substrate for this new way of thinking about options to create and run networks and services on top of them OFELIA enables users to control their own network and create an Internet of their own Multiple concurrent, heterogeneous, user defined and user controlled Internet infrastructure sharing same physical infrastructure
13 OFELIA Project OpenFlow in Europe Linking Infrastructure and Applica)ons The goal is to create a unique experimental facility that allows researchers to not only experiment on a test network but to control the network itself precisely and dynamically. The OFELIA facility is based on OpenFlow that allows virtualizing and controlling the network environment through secure and standardized interfaces. OFELIA belongs to the second wave of FIRE projects under FP7 EC contribu)on: 4,450,000 Project start date: 1 October 2010 Dura)on: 36 months (3 years)
