Conference THE NEXT EVOLUTION OF THE INTERNET FROM INTERNET OF THINGS TO INTERNET OF Smart Future Networks EVERYTHING Patrick Waldemar Vice President Telenor Research and Future Studies Tuesday 19 th of March 2013, 09:30-17:00, Telenor, Oslo, Norway. Auditorium Voice, Telenor Expo, Snarøyveien 30, 1331 Fornebu

Presentation Outline Telenor Innovation and IoT Telenor Research and Future Studies Smart Future Networks IoT challenges Expectations

Innovation is vital for growth - Focus in Telenor Customer centricity Telenor s brand is Built around people. We work with people s needs and constantly seek ways to create value for our customers Positioning in new ecosystems We cooperate and work with partners, in an open innovation system. Spanning from enabling new applications to close cooperation on innovations with partners Future growth areas We create new business opportunities for future growth, like Mobile Financial Services and Internet of Things Operational excellence We innovate in new technologies and processes, creating new production opportunities and operational performance

Future Growth Internet of Things a potentially significant market Telenor becomes a vital part of the customers own product offering telenor traxion telenor objects.

Telenor Research and Future Studies: 6 Research Areas Competition and Business Models Insights from Data Service Innovation Smart Future Networks E2E Differentiated Services Future Eco-systems

Smart Future Networks IoT Challenges Objective Research on technologies in the transport and core and in the radio access part, with a potentially disruptive impact on our business How to design robust mobile broadband data networks with improved spectrum utilization, handling of complex heterogeneous networks, efficient use of software virtualization and considerations on the technology implications when the Internet meets the mobile network. IoT challenges Number of devices in itself represent a challenge which needs remedy e.g. by applying HetNet and SON technologies Meeting IoT specific service and traffic requirements by offering flexible APIs, SLAs and tariffs Offer resilience and traffic management also when network or service issues occurs, e.g. by applying advanced traffic control supported by SDN Offering virtual networks for virtual IoT operators or for classes of IoT applications, e.g. for secure closed user groups.

Expectations more about Future Internet

Conference THE NEXT EVOLUTION OF THE INTERNET FROM INTERNET OF THINGS TO INTERNET OF Future Internet EVERYTHING Inge Grønbæk Senior Adviser Telenor Research and Future Studies Tuesday 19 th of March 2013, 09:30-17:00, Telenor, Oslo, Norway. Auditorium Voice, Telenor Expo, Snarøyveien 30, 1331 Fornebu

Presentation Outline Opportunity spaces Architectural approach (NFV, SDN, APIs) Summary SDN: the new paradigm for the Future Internet.

Three Strategic opportunity spaces Creates competitive supply of innovative applications by third parties. Open Innovation Software Defined Networks Creates abstractions to enable faster innovation... Network Function Virtualisation (NFV ISG) Reduces CAPEX, OPEX, Space & Power Consumption.

NFV Concept (ETSI ISG) Message Router Classical Network Appliance Approach CDN Session Border Controller WAN Acceleration Network functions Virtualisation, cloud computing ideas for telecom services Independent Software Vendors Ecosystem Innovative Competitive & DPI Firewall Carrier Grade NAT Tester/QoE monitor Orchestrated, automatic & remote install. SGSN/GGSN PE Router BRAS Fragmented non-commodity hardware. Physical install per appliance per site. Radio/Fixed Access Network Nodes Hardware development large barrier to entry for new vendors, constraining innovation & competition. High volume standard servers High volume standard storage High volume Ethernet switches

Evolving SDN architecture (ITU-T) Control Plane Network OS Data Plane (Specialized Hardware) Separation Control Plane Network OS Data Plane (Forwarding Abstraction) a.1 control and data planes tightly-coupled b.1 control and data planes separated SDN Apps SDN Languages Controller (NetworkOS) Client Server a.2 distributed control of network equipments Client Server b.2 centralized, programmable control of network equipments e.g., Content Routing Mobilty a.3 single physical network Energy efficient forwarding b.3 Multiple, isolated, virtual networks a. Current networking technology b. SDN networking technology

SDN Switching based on OpenFlow (ONF) Network function API Controller Control Plane OpenFlow Protocol Flow table OpenFlow-enabled appliance (e.g. switch) Data Plane Matches subsets of packet header fields and takes action Switch Port Eth MAC VLAN ID IP TCP

Example SDN control plane network functions Mobility management. QoS control, traffic engineering and service assurance. On-demand dynamic path provisioning, e.g. offload for mobile networks. High-security networks and distributed firewalls, running antivirus as a service in the network. Control of resource consumption and traffic measurements. Network virtualization. Enabling test/experimental protocols on the network. Network sharing. Application specific networks, e.g. topologies. IoT networks.

SDN Prospects Serve as a vehicle for introducing a simplified, global, physical and virtualized service infrastructure. Network control can be separated from the traditional monolithic network elements and be handled by third parties, e.g. for support of specific end user applications. Allows fast introduction of ubiquitous services which can be tested in safe environment (slices) not conflicting with operational services. Virtualization supports network sharing and VNOs The NFV/SDN simplifications open up for newcomers.

IoT Challenges Handling the sheer increase in number of mobile and stationary devices. Provide the required set of assured service classes on an end-to-end basis and across operator domains. Offer resilience and traffic management also when network or service issues occurs. Develop tariffing principles and tariffs stimulating cooperation and market development. Provide security and fraud prevention/detection. Open up for and support third party service provisioning Virtual (IoT) networks, 3pty routing control, etc.

Summary Virtualization and SDN represent a new paradigm consolidating the Internet and cellular networks into a simplified converged fixed and mobile service network, i.e. the Internet of Everything.

Thank You! Questions? INTERNET OF THINGS: INTERNET OF ANYTHING, ANYTIME, ANYWHERE
