Cross-layer Optimisation and Traffic Control for Delivering Super High Definition Video Miguel Rio, John Mitchell, David Griffin, Eleni Mykoniati, Raul Landa, Richard Clegg Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering University College London

Motivation: The importance of video By 2013 video will represent 95% of the traffic on the Internet Already a big headache for ISPs But also an opportunity: content based value added services Higher quality will increase requirements in orders of magnitude Content industry important for EU

Other applications Video Games and Virtual Reality Financial sector: Every millisecond counts Clouds Inter-data centre connectivity is becoming crucial Secured traffic: cyber-security infrastructure will require levels of control that IP today does not deliver

Networks Today Application Session Transport Network Data Link physical

Why cross-layer? CDNs P2P Clouds Cross-Layer Coordinator Lots of innovation at optical/pysical layer

Cross-layer is not new Many proposals for cross-layer proposals in the wireless domain (e.g. congestion control optimization given signal strength) But in the optical domain, gains can be even bigger Also: we need a general framework EU call 8, 1.1 explicitly requests multi-layer and convergence between packet and optical networks

In the Access!7720"38)6%;#:#2%?0<632206<% A#B<B%CDD/E%,*)$$1234#*%,))*5063')*%!7720"38)6% 9:#*234%;)<0"% 97#6=2)(%,)6'*)22#*%,-$').#*%/*#.0$#$% >#$05#6832% >)-'#*% 9;D,)6'#6'% >#7)$0')*4%?720' 9&F

OpenFlow Openflow provides a unified and standardized way of accessing and controlling layer 2 and layer 3 devices Extending it to lower layers will be a major development. Already being done in OFELIA

UCL s CONNET lab Special built lab for cross-layer research Special focus in Access networks (PON s, OLTs, ONU) Lots of activities on PON design and access protocols

easily connectable to the world?lm&m%e*.& C.2*3*1%)& A))%I&G)3.#E& )F.+%E& HD4A:&3*#6& -.))*/%&0(12.3&4%$5"+6& 7-048& D?'0'D&E%E*2.$%E& "(12.3&3*#6& '%(")*$"+,& 09: ;<&5.,& =(3*>%+ ;<&-"+$&

Objectives Integrate UCL s CONNET lab into a bigger testbed. Design and implement a cross-layer control architecture that enables delivery of high bandwidth video to the home without significant infrastructure investments Design and implement algorithms for real-time configuration of live streams Design and implement content scheduling algorithms for time-shifted consumption where content popularity, Internet traffic and number of wavelengths available is taken into consideration.

Experimentation These architectures need to be implemented and experimented exhaustively. Examples: The use of Multicast (both network layer and application layer) over optical networks. Intelligent use of multiple frequencies in the access Time-shifted media applications interaction with storage and optical capabilities Simulations will always provide limited insight

What about the Core? End-to-end path is important Fascinating developments at the optical layer with re-configurable hardware Making these functionalities available to applications will provide a paradigm shift to how we build services UK joint work with University of Essex, BBC and British Telecom Enormous challenge in inter-domain

Research Objectives in the core New Hardware devices and architectures Heuristics for end2end simultaneous cooptimization at different layers Multicast at different domains is particularly hard Flexible software architecture that allows for easy deployment of new cross-layer information flows Protocol extensions (e.g. OpenFlow) Look at different business models (e.g. over the top vs integrated ISP/content distributor)

Conclusions Video will drive network growth in the next decade Cross-layer approaches enable much better use of resources OpenFlow enables seamless control across devices and layers Many interesting possibilities in the access and in the core
