The Completion of the East Studio Building Jacobs School faculty, students, and administrators are gearing up for the big move to the school s new 85,000-squarefoot, state-of-the-art East Studio Building during the summer of 2013, with a major celebration planned to coincide with IU s Cream & Crimson Weekend October 31. The building will substantially change the center of gravity of the Jacobs School of Music, positioning it at the corner of Jordan Avenue and East Third Street. The Admissions and Financial Aid office takes shape usic IUM The Anniversary Plaza in front of the building, a gift from Bill and Cindy Simon, marks the gateway to the university s arts corridor with access to concert halls, the Musical Arts Center, the Department of Theatre and Drama, the African American Arts Institute,

The building will provide technologically and acoustically superior teaching and practice facilities to rival any music school or conservatory in the world. the IU Auditorium, the IU Art Museum, and the IU Cinema. Celebrating Charles Webb Each studio will have high-definition videoconferencing capabilities, enabling the faculty to teach interactively around the globe. Photo by Kendall Reeves In addition to the 84 faculty studios, administrative offices in the building include Admissions and Financial Aid, Undergraduate and Graduate Advising Services, and the Office of the Deans. The funding for the building was made possible by a $44 million grant from the Lilly Endowment Inc. For updates, photos, videos, and more information on plans to celebrate the new building, visit blogs.music. indiana.edu/newbuilding. The Anniversary Plaza under construction. In celebration of the eightieth birthday of Dean Emeritus Charles H. Webb Jr., the Jacobs School has published The Art of Descant and Free Harmonization, a book of more than 200 choral and organ descants that accompany a wide variety of hymns. The harmonizations, descants, and arrangements were written by Webb and are the culmination of more than 65 years of performance experience as a church organist, choir director, and composer of liturgical music. This book will be a valuable resource for organists and choral directors alike as they seek to enliven the worship experience of their parishioners, said Dean Gwyn Richards. It also stands as a testament to Charles Webb s influence in this field. Soprano and Jacobs faculty member Sylvia McNair observed, In his transcriptions, Charles has made the original music soar and has revealed the majesty and magic of the original music with extraordinary, imaginative insights. Testing the acoustics of the first completed studio. An introduction, with insights on Webb s professional life and the story behind the creation of the book, was written by Marianne Tobias, resident musicologist and program annotator for the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra and longtime supporter of the Jacobs School. The book is available from Marketplace, Jacobs online store, at iumusicmarketplace.com. 11

Seward Organ in Auer Hall, the Jacobs School will celebrate the completion of a second large instrument built by America s leading organ builder, C. B. Fisk. Opus 91 has three-manuals, 45 stops, and 2,838 pipes. The French Baroque-inspired instrument resides in the refurbished Alumni Hall in the Indiana Memorial Union, with inaugural recital celebrations planned to coincide with An Organ at the Crossroads conference Sept , Greg Bover, VP of Operations at Fisk and project manager 12 In addition to its use for recitals, it will be a pedagogical resource for what has become the nation s largest organ department and will provide students and faculty with an instrument with an eighteenth- to earlynineteenth-century accent, something that has long been missing from the department s instrument collection. Opus 91 is the perfect complement to Alumni Hall and an inspirational addition to the instruments of our organ department, said Dean Gwyn Richards. The presence of this landmark instrument in a space that sits at the very crossroads of our campus and community will allow the Jacobs Organ Department to develop unique and innovative musical experiences that appeal to the widest possible range of listeners, said Janette Fishell, department chair. The acquisition and transport to Bloomington of Opus 91 were made possible through a gift arrangement with Sandy Montenegro Littlefield and her children, Jacques Christian Littlefield and Jeannik Sandy Nicole Littlefield. Many others, including the IU Foundation, C. B. Fisk Inc., and friends of IU also supported the project. Its arrival makes the Jacobs School of Music home to three Fisk organs, the largest number of instruments by the builder in any one location in the world. The third, Opus 142, is a three-manual, six-stop, practice organ that was recently installed in the Music Addition practice facilities. An Organ at the Crossroads Public festivities for the new organ will commence in early fall with a conference organized by the Jacobs School of Music Organ Department. Sept , 2013 See page 46 for details.

Five Friends Master Class Series Choral conductor Simon Carrington (right) was a guest in the Five Friends Master Class Series, honoring the lives of Jacobs students Chris Carducci, Garth Eppley, Georgina Joshi, Zachary Novak, and Robert Samels (below) made possible by a $1 million gift from the Georgina Joshi Foundation Inc. This annual series of mini-residencies by a number of the world s leading musicians and teachers focuses on areas of interest most relevant to the lives of the five friends. String Virtuosi Play Carnegie Hall Nearly two dozen gifted youngsters studying at the Jacobs School s pre-college String Academy, directed by Jacobs professor Mimi Zweig, headed to New York City s iconic Carnegie Hall in March 2013 to perform in Zankel Hall with acclaimed violinist Gilles Apap. Their performance in front of an audience of more than 500 was met with a standing ovation. Alumna Marka Gustavsson, violist of the Colorado Quartet, said it all in a note to Zweig, The event was really inspiring. Of course the preparation, skill, and talent of all those young players was extremely impressive, but their evident enjoyment of performing, love for the music, and ease in exchange of creative and musical impulse in the moment were the elements that made the concert so special. The idea of performing in New York came from a recent summer concert in Bloomington with Apap whom critic Josef Woodard has described as a musician who defies categorization. Afterward, Zweig was approached by audience members who were so excited by the performance that they suggested taking the group to the venerable venue. The expedition also took the ensemble to Public School 68 a Bronx, N.Y., junior high school for a presentation and performance hosted by the not-for-profit Education Through Music. 13

Double Exposure II Following a successful premiere last year, Double Exposure an annual project that pairs Jacobs composition students with IU film students returned to IU Cinema in March 2013 featuring scores performed live by an ensemble of student musicians. This year, students in the Department of Recording Arts joined the 10 creative teams to contribute their expertise in the areas of sound design, dialogue enhancement, recording, and mixing. Throughout the project, students were supported by IU faculty members, including Jacobs faculty John Gibson and Mark Hood. Watch the trailer at youtube.com/user/thejsom. Technologies of Experience Jacobs Assistant Professor of Musicology Philip Ford (right) and Dawna Schuld, IU art history assistant professor, led the multidisciplinary seminar Technologies of Experience in April 2013 at IU s Lilly Library. The collaborative project involved faculty and graduate students from the Musicology and Art History departments and was aimed at investigating questions of art and experience across centuries and cultures. The keynote speaker was Graham Larkin, a Canadian art historian and curator known for his work on expository imaging. Saving America s Recorded Sound Heritage Konrad Strauss, chair of the Department of Recording Arts, and Philip Ponella, director of IU s William and Gayle Cook Music Library, were part of a task force that helped create a national recording preservation plan to save America s recorded sound heritage, released in February 2013 by the Library of Congress. Sound archivist Brenda NelsonStrauss, head of collections for the IU Archives of African American Music and Culture, co-authored the plan.
