Many years have gone by now in the creation of the halo ring style. It has been varied to make different concepts fit custom designs. Objective: Our purpose in this project is to show the basic concepts in making this style of ring. You should think of this design in two basic parts: the halo top and the shank of the ring. We have made this ring with a single shank to simplify its connection to the halo top. In a later project we will do a split shank to connect to the halo top. Parameters: Gems: 6.5mm center and 1.0mm halo and shank 2) Curve-Single Line-and draw three separate lines to designate the bottom and side thicknesses of 1.5mm for the bottom and 2.0mm for the sides. Ring size: any Ring thicknesses: 1.5mm bottom of shank 2.0mm sides blended to top tier. Finishing details: fillet curves to 0.15 edges inside and outside curves on shank only. 3) Curve-Arc-Start, End, Point on Arc-start at the outside end snap at 9 o clock position line, snap to the 3 o clock outside end snap and bring the arc down to snap to the outside end of the 6 o;clock line. 1) Curve-Circle-Diameter and make the circle the size of the ring that you want. It makes no sense at this point to continue with the shank until we have done the halo 11
top. The halo top will predicate how you will connect the shank to it because of its size. Let s now move on to designing and constructing our halo top. slightly outward. This is entirely up to you how to line up the stone. We can adjust this later to fit our needs. The Halo Top 4) Import-Round Brilliant-from your gem folder. It should come in at 6.5mm. Leave it this size for now. Designing the profile for our halo Front VP 5) Transform-Scale 3D-the center stone down with a copy=yes in command line option, origin point is F4, the first reference point is on the mid point at the right diameter of the stone, left click, type in.5mm and hit enter. Hit enter again to end the command. 7) Curve-Polyline-draw out a bright cut profile like pictured to accommodate the stone. Use your judgment on how thick or high you want this to be. 1mm minimum is good but this on one is a little higher. We also filleted the top corners a little to soften it up. Enable Gumball 6) Select the stone and move into place where you want the halo to go around the stone..this is just for alignment at this point. We moved it slightly beyond the edge of the center stone, down and tilted it 11
Top VP 8) Curve-Circle-Diameter-draw a circle out from F4 and type in 6.5mm. 11) Transform-Array Along Curveselect the gem to array and hit enter, select the curve you just extracted for the path and put in 24 for the count in the pop up menu and hit OK. (You may want a different number with different size gems and spacing for prong layout, etc.) 9) Surface-Sweep 1 Rail-select the circle and then the cross section profile and hit enter twice. Front VP-Making the Prongs-No snaps on 12) Curve-Line-draw a line on the C- plane for the position of the first prong. This can be adjusted later into position. 10) Curve-Curve from Objects-Extract Isocurve-select the top inside surface just swept and left click on the mid snap of the bright cut profile. It the gem gets in your way hide it. 13) Solid-Pipe-select the line and choose the rounded end option in the command line. Choose the Diameter option as well, type.6 and hit enter three times. 11
17) Transform-Array-Polar-choose the two prongs to array and hit enter. Center of array is F4. Number of items is 24, hit enter and enter again for the 360 degrees. Top VP 14) Rotate-choose the prong just made, center of rotation is F4 and rotate it into position between the gems as pictured. Creating the Prongs for the center stone Front VP 18) Curve-Line-and draw a line as pictured on the front cplane. 15) Copy-choose the prong just rotated and hit enter. Move it from where it is to the inside of the stones as pictured. Use the gumball to get it exactly where you want it. 19) Solid-Pipe-select the line, rounded caps option, type 1mm in diameter, enter, enter and enter. 16) Edit-Group- and group the two prong together. 11
We are now ready to move on to creating the rest of our shank, placing gems on the shoulders in a channel design to match our bright cut halo. 22) Window everything in the halo, shift ortho on and drag it all up to where the top of the gemstone center is about 7mm above the ring rail. Top VP 20) Rotate-select the prong just made and hit enter. Center of rotation F4, first reference point is shift ortho on to lock it horizontal and left click, the second reference point type 45 and hit enter. This will move the prong 45 degrees as pictured. 23) Curve-Interpolate Curve- draw out a curve and adjust with control points until you get what you want. 21) Transform-Array-Polar-select the prong and hit enter. Center of array is F4, type in 4 and hit enter. If you like what you see, hit enter to accept it. 24) Curve-Offset Curve-Offset-and offset the ring rail to the outside 1.5mm and then the shoulder curve to the inside 1.5mm. 11
25) Mirror the offset shoulder curve to the other side over F4. Hide the halo top. 28) Curve-Line-and make two short lines to connect the outer curves to the inner ones and join these all together. 26) Trim-select the two shoulder curves and the offset ring rail curve and cut away like shown below. 29) Solid-Extrude Planar Curve- Straight-and choose both sides, type 1 and hit enter. We want this to be 2mm wide. 27) Mirror-choose the outside shoulder curve on the right and hit enter. Center of mirror plane is F4, shift ortho on vertical and left click when you have it to the left. Show the halo top. 11
and add the same size prongs. The table of the stone should be even or just below the shoulder surface. You also want to leave enough room at the top for the bright cut and the prongs. 30) Solid-Fillet Edge-type in.2, hit enter and choose the top edge of the shank where it meets the halo on both sides. 33) Curve-Curve from Object-Extract Isocurve-and select the outside shoulder surface and snap it to the mid point at the top of the shoulder. 31) Copy-select the gem on the right side of the halo, select the (in place) option in the command line and hit enter. Turn on your gumball manipulator and move one of these out to the side as pictured. 34) Curve-Line-start of line at F4 and bring it out past the 3 o clock position. Trim the bottom half of the isocurve away and hit enter. 32) While the gumball is still on move the stone into the position along the shoulder at the top as pictured. Remember we are going to bright cut out the channel 11
curve to choose will be the straight line you just made, enter, type 15 in the number of objects box and OK. 35) Analyze-Length-choose the curve you just trimmed and hit enter. Look in the command history window and make a note of it. Ours was ) Delete 3 of the stones on the right end of the line leaving 12. Also delete the one stone in the shoulder. 36) Copy-choose the stone on the shoulder of the ring and hit enter. Move the stone into place by dragging and using gumball as pictured. 39) Transform-Flow Along Curveselect the stones along the straight line and hit enter. Select Copy=yes and Rigid=yes as your options. The base curve is the straight line and choose it on the left end. The target curve is the curve on the shoulder and choose it near the upper end. The result: Creating the Prongs 37) Transform-Array-Along Curve-select the stone and hit enter. The 40) Curve-Single Line-create a line as pictured for our pipe. 11
41) Solid-Pipe-diameter and round end options, type in.55 and hit enter 3 times. 44) Edit-Group-the two prongs together. 45) Transform-Array-Along Curve-select the grouped prongs, enter and then click on the curve, type in 15 and enter. Delete the last two sets of prongs. 42) Transform-Move-the prong out into alignment to set the stone. 46) Transform-Flow Along Curveselect all the prongs and hit enter. Choose the base curve at the left end and the target curve at the top end. 43) Transform-Mirror-the prong over F4 to the other side. 11
49) Copy-select the profile and drag it from the point it is to the top and rotate it into position..make sure they are lined up. Creating the bright cut 47) Curve-Polyline-draw a two line polyline to create half of your profile. 50) Surface-Sweep 1 Rail-select the curve on the surface between the two profiles, then the 2 profiles and hit enter. Make sure the direction of the arrow are matched and hit OK. 48) Curve-Single-Line-from F4 staight out to the right with shift ortho on. Trim the lower part of the polyline, mirror the half polyline over F4 and join them together. Close the profile with another single line and join. 51) Solid-CapPlanar-select the surface and hit enter. It will create a solid for you too boolean difference it from the ring. 52) Transform-Mirror-select the stones, prongs, and the bright cutter and hit enter. Type F4 and shift ortho on to get all of them to the other side. 11
53) Solid-Difference-select the ring, enter and then the two cutters we swept and hit enter. Save As: Halo Ring Creating the Azures for the gems 48) Following the procedure we did with arraying objects along a curve create a cylinder under each stone 50% the size of all the stones in the halo as well as the shoulders of the ring. Do not make them to go all the way through the shank. Just make them long enough to clear the culets during setting. The reason for this is during casting there is way too much turbulence if the holes go all the way through. 49) Solid-Fillet Edge-Fillet Edge-type in.15 and select all outside edges of the ring and hit enter twice. You can vary the fillet size to your liking but you don t want to break the surfaces, so be careful here. 11
