1 Math Structures II EMPACTS Project Spring th Grade Co-Teach Math Class Professor: William Hammack Team Members: Carina Albarran Damaris Jimenez Faith Hancock

2 Project Overview On February 14 our EMPACTS group played an Algebraic Expressions Bingo Game with Mrs. McDowell's 6th Grade Class at Lingle Middle School. This activity served students with a practice/review on solving algebraic expressions for the Benchmark Test. Students practiced the idea that a letter can stand for a number to solve an expression. We were in a co-teach classroom that consisted of students of regular curriculum and special-education curriculum.

3 Curriculum Covered Students practiced the process of substituting a specific variable to solve an expression. The BINGO game met the course content objective of the instructor because it helped students understand the process of evaluating an expression. The BINGO game helped students practice the idea of seeing X or any given variable as an empty symbol that can be replaced with any value given to be solved.

6 Service To The Community - We volunteered our time to help 6 th grade students review algebraic expression by creating a BINGO game. - Made solving expressions fun and helped students work out each problem as needed. - Mrs. McDowell was excited to use our BINGO sheets in the future!

7 Materials -BINGO charts for students to use. -Blank sheets of papers for students to have plenty of room to solve expressions -Dry erase boards for students to display their algebraic expression answers -Gold Fish for students to place in the boxes -Prizes for the winners! (More Gold Fish! )

9 Methodology: Contacted the school to obtain permission. Met with the teachers to know what material they are covering. Received approval of activity we wanted to create for the students and arranged a time and date for the activity to take place. Time Line: February 2 Contacted Principal at Lingle Middle School. February 3 Met with teacher to review course content and discuss ideas. February 6 Approved algebraic expression BINGO game with Mrs. McDowell. February 14 Presentation by Damaris, Carina, and Faith

10 Skills Developed As a Team and as Individuals Team: Ability to work together as a team to create a BINGO game for a group of students. Individual Personal and Professional: Become comfortable working with students of regular education and special-education. Technology: Creating a BINGO card on Excel, and creating a Power Point presentation. Communication: Communicating with building Principal and Teachers at Lingle Middle School. Organizational: Meeting deadlines and making time arrangements with Teachers.

11 (3) Students understand the use of variables in mathematical expressions. They write expressions and equations that correspond to given situations, evaluate expressions, and use expressions and formulas to solve problems. Students understand that expressions in different forms can be equivalent, and they use the properties of operations to rewrite expressions in equivalent forms.

12 Frameworks Number theory apply the addition, subtraction, multiplication,division, properties of equality to one step equation with whole numbers Apply rules (convention) for order of operation to whole numbers with and without parentheses. Expression equation and inequalities model write and solve one step equation by informal methods using manipulative and appropriate technology write simple algebraic expression using appropriate operation with one variable evaluate the algebraic expression with one variable using appropriate properties and operation.

13 Parents and Guardians, February 1, 2012 A group of students from Northwest Arkansas Community College will be helping my co-teach 6 th grade math class review for the Benchmark Test. Their project requires them to take pictures of the students participating in their activity. The pictures will be published online under the EMPACTS web page with NWACC.
