This course also includes a study of philosophies, methods, materials, assessments, and child growth and development related to teaching art in the elementary school and classroom. The course will acquaint the student with art media and methods appropriate for children. The student will develop projects to promote the child s appreciation of art and to integrate art into the total curriculum. Other: Website References The Boyce Teacher Education Program Mission and Theme: The primary purpose of the Boyce Teacher Education Program (TEP) is to provide Christ-centered quality teacher education, preparing teacher candidates for both Christian and public school teaching under the theme of teachers as leaders. The goal of the TEP for each teacher candidate is to develop the knowledge, the skills, the dispositions, and the intent to serve as a professional Christian educator. This goal is depicted in the conceptual framework logo below: Course Goals: The teacher candidate will study 1. the elements and principles of design in viewing and creating artwork. 2. instructional goals, objectives, strategies and alternative approaches to art instruction. 3. the role and importance of the visual arts in a cultural and historical context. 4. the contributions of an art program to a diverse population, including disabled and gifted students.

2 5. the relationship between art and other disciplines within the curriculum. 6. creative problem solving and higher order thinking skills through art. 7. assessment strategies that are used in school art programs. 8. art health hazards in educational setting. 9. reflection and assessment of the characteristics and merits of their work and the work of others. 10. the importance of arts in the life of a child. Learning Outcomes: Each of the learning outcomes and learning activities of this course are aligned with the 10 Kentucky Teacher Standards, which identify the competencies of knowledge, pedagogical skills, and dispositions that each student should achieve through this course. The Kentucky Teacher Standard for each of the course activities below is listed after it. The teacher candidate in AR 231 is expected to: Discuss and use fundamental concepts, skills and methods of inquiry (aesthetics, criticism, art history and art processes) of visual art. KTS 1.1 Understand how these items can be integrated with other subject areas. KTS 1.2 Identify developmental characteristics of child art (Viktor Lowenfeld). Identify special needs of exceptional children in art lesson plans. KTS 1.3 Identify environmental factors and learning styles of children that relate to art skills KT 2.2 Design lesson(s) based on media, techniques, and processes appropriate to the age of the children to be taught.and aligned with Academic Expectations from Transformations Core Content Program of Studies in KERA. KTS 2.1 Identify art concepts and processes suitable for multicultural art lessons. KTS 1.2 Practice and develop competence in selected visual art processes. Demonstrate these and selected arts core concepts on a classroom door design. KTS 1.3 Use technology when appropriate, in preparation and presentation of art lessons. KTS 6.1, 6.2 Observe a regular or special P-5 classroom and teach an art lesson to a group of school children using selected teaching strategies and classroom management skills, and document these in a written school report. KTS , , 5.2, 5.4, , 9.1 Understand and demonstrate an awareness of cultural art objects. KYTS 1.2 Know and use evaluation procedures in lesson plans for art teaching including current art assessments. KTS Read and discuss selected articles from major journals in art education. Review related art education Praxis study questions and case studies. KTS 1.1 Present art lesson(s) integrating art production, art history, aesthetics and art criticism with other classroom disciplines. KTS 8.3, 8.4 Complete study guides and final self report, on time. KTS 9.2 Display supportive Boyce TEP dispositions (attitudes, beliefs, perceptions) in written work and during art making, art teaching experiences and oral presentations. KTS 9.4

3 Course Requirements: (800 points total) 1. Regular attendance and participation in class activities and discussions.(100 points) Points for absence will be deducted from the 100 points assigned to your attendance record. For each absence 10 points will be deducted, regardless of reason for the absence. 2. Write two Lesson Plans, (50 points each, 100 points total) using the TWS lesson plan format. Post these 2 lesson plans on your e-portfolio. You may collaborate with you field experience teacher in the planning of these 2 lessons. 3. Practice team-teaching with a classmate.(50 points). The lesson will be taught in a simulated fashion to the other class members at a time scheduled by the instructor. Use one of the Lesson Plans of #1 above, The team may choose which team member s lesson plan will be used. 4. Teach one of the lessons of #1 above (100 points) to the class of your Field Experience. Your Field Experience teacher must verify that you taught the lesson. A verification form will be issued as part of your Field Experience materials. 5. Develop an artistic design for an elementary classroom door (50 points) 6. Art Portfolio: (100 points) Collect and organize a minimum of 50 pieces of art work that will be useful in teaching art to elementary children. You must choose art pieces that will be applied in an interdisciplinary application; that is, different kinds of art that you may integrate into teaching math, social studies, writing, science, or even computer technology for children. 7. Analyses of children's art work.(50 points) Include these analyses in your Art Portfolio od #6 above. The analysis for each example will be based on the developmental skills of the child for art work. Five examples are required. 8. Write a reflection (50 points) for your e-portfolio based on your learning about art in the Field Experience. 9. Mid-term (100 points) and Final (100 points) exams on concepts and issues from course content. Relate the fundamental concepts of art education. 3. Describe and understand the functions of art education. UNDERSTAND HOW ART IS USED IN SCHOOL CURRICULUM. 1. Discuss different achievements of art education in the total scheme of education. Presentation of an interdisciplinary lesson which connects art to another discipline (Math, English, Social Science, Science). 2. Discuss problem solving, designing and decision making. A. Develop ideas and content for self purpose or occasion B. Imagine a visual/spatial, kinesthetic, or verbal metaphor for personal expression or communication C. Choose medium and/or style D. Assess the choices E. Refine the choices F. Refine the product G. Evaluate for audience reception UNDERSTAND EVALUATION OF ART WORK. 1. Explain how to recognize and use Principles and Elements of Design. 2. Understand an original work of art. UNDERSTAND DIFFERENT STYLES AND DIFFERENT MEDIUMS TO USE IN CREATING ART. 1. Exhibit and discuss different styles of art. 2. Discuss different possibilities of creating a variety of child art. UNDERSTAND DIFFERENT METHODS AND APPROACHES TO TEACHING ART. 1. Explain and demonstrate how to lead an elementary class in the formulation of class rules and consequences for different ages. 2. Explain how to teach composing and drawing a picture. Who? What? and Where? 3. Explore different 2-D and 3-D medias and techniques. EVALUATE DIFFERENT TEACHING STYLES AND DIFFERENT STYLES OF ART. 1. Practice teaching art lesson plans. 2. Practice doing all of the art exercises. 3. Learn how to create art from within yourself. 4. Practice stimulating the creativity of others. 5. Practice creating art from found or used materials. 6. View different styles or techniques of creating art.

5 Special Policies 1. Classroom policies In order to ensure full class participation, any student with a disabling condition requiring special accommodations (e.g., tape recorders, special adaptive equipment, special note-taking or test taking needs) is strongly encouraged to contact the professor at the beginning of this course. Male students are not to wear hats or facial jewelry in class. No food or drinks are allowed in class, except water. Given the technological classroom, only fully-closeable containers of water are permitted. 2. E-campus - There will be other resources available for this class on e-campus. All grades will be recorded through e-campus so you may check your grades (and attendance) throughout the semester.
