1 Graduate School of Education Education & Special Education Programs MISSION: The mission of the Master of Science in Education and Special Education Programs is to educate, train, and graduate individuals with strong theoretical knowledge; practical classroom experience; technological and informational literacy; a dedication to multiculturalism, diversity, and global awareness; and a commitment to bring the benefits of education to all children, adolescents, and adults regardless of individual differences or special needs. GOALS AND OBJECTIVES 1: Encompasses the achievement of student familiarity with conceptual frameworks in study of the history, philosophy, and social foundations of education. 1.1 Analyze texts in writing and/or discussion for validity of reasoning and drawing inferences 1.2 Analyze and use research literature from the field of education and related disciplines in their papers, presentations, and projects 1.3 Apply knowledge of child development and learning to use developmentally appropriate practice and effective, scientifically supported approaches to instruction 1.4 Determine in writing and discussion the validity of proposed support for particular approaches to instruction 1.5 Demonstrate knowledge of various learning and teacher standards and the basis of their importance. 2 2: Encompasses recognition and appreciation by students of diversity, multiculturalism, and globalism in their professional lives, and exploration of related areas of academic study as well as experiences in the field. Students will demonstrate knowledge and competency in issues of diversity related to culture, gender, and disability within America. Students will encourage such interest and appreciation in the students with whom they work. 2.1 Demonstrate in writing and discussion recognition of multiple ways of experiencing the world by different groups 2.2 Discuss and write on the implications of our multicultural society for teaching and learning in school 2.3 Create written and oral reflections on the effects of one s own group on assumptions and values related to work as a teacher. Students will apply this knowledge to develop plans of action, in cooperation with parents wherever possible, for meeting the needs of such students in the classroom in ways that are aligned with federal, state and local standards and requirements as well as currently accepted theory and best practices. Appropriate knowledge and skill will be evident in student lesson presentations. 3.1 Give an account of theories and practices pertinent to special education, such as differentiated instruction, response to intervention, and universal design for learning 3.2 Describe the appropriate use of specific tools such as life-space interviews, in effectively addressing problem or challenging behavior of individual children

3 3.3 Formulate effective goal-oriented instructional practices for students based on effective use of IEP s 3.4 Demonstrate knowledge of critical legislation such as IDEA and the impact of related concepts such as FAPE and LRE 3.5 Apply relevant local state, and national standards in the development of strategies in key areas, such as assessment, classroom management, and lesson planning 3.6 Give an account of characteristics of students with disabilities in all major categories, such as autistic spectrum disorders, mental retardation, severe and multiple disabilities, etc., and of effective practices, including the use of assistive technology, so that all students have access to the curriculum 3.7 Organize and implement effective lessons for students with disabilities. 4 4: Encompasses student achievement of information literacy for the purpose of locating, reviewing and conducting research in education, and technology literacy for the enhancement of effectiveness of instruction. 4.1 Demonstrate competent use of research resources, such as peer-reviewed journals in writing of reflection and research papers 4.2 Apply critical thinking skills to uses of information derived from a range of sources, including electronic sources; demonstrate knowledge and use of technology for instructional purposes 4.3 Apply technology for planning and organizational purposes; describe the nature of appropriate assistive technology in meeting the needs of students with disabilities 4.4 Apply technology to developing strategies in essential areas of pedagogy, such as instructional planning, classroom management, and instruction.
