Examination sessions take place after the end of the semester. Examination dates Examination dates are different in each faculty and depend on which courses students opt to take. Please therefore ensure that when registering for courses, you take the examination dates into consideration. Substantiated requests for alternative exam dates can be considered when communicated to your student advisor at the beginning of the semester. Transcripts of Records You can expect to receive your transcript of records by the end of February for the Fall semester and in August for the Spring semester. 3 Duration of Study We accept students who wish to study 1 semester or 2 consecutive semesters. Levels of Study Undergraduate Graduate Postgraduate Application and Registrations Procedures We only accept nominations sent by the International Relations Office of our partner university. The names and addresses of the nominated incoming students should be sent to the Institutional Coordinator Mobility. From there, the application form will be sent directly to the students. After application is complete, we will inform the students about important information and registration dates. Course Information, Orientation Program and Learning Agreement For all study-related issues such as learning agreements, credits, assessments, etc., please contact the at the corresponding faculty. For the Transnational Legal Studies Program please contact also Prof. Morawa or his secretary Ms. Dietrich. Language of Instruction Students must be able to take courses in English or German. We don t request an official language proficiency score. German preparatory language course During the semester break, just before each semester begins, the University of Lucerne offers its exchange students a free presemester taster course German for Beginners. The application form will be sent directly to each nominated exchange student. Accommodation Website for incoming students Student accommodation can usually be provided to all exchange students, however since there is a limit to the student rooms available, you are advised to complete your room application as soon as you receive it. Non-German-speaking students have priority of reservation. The application form will be sent directly to nominated students. 4 General Information Insurance Students should hold the following insurances during their stay at the University of Lucerne: Overseas Health Insurance In Switzerland, Private Health Insurance is compulsory. The Swiss Federal Act on Insurance Contracts stipulates a strict and complete insurance coverage, which must adhere to the Swiss Social Insurance (AHV) conditions. After their arrival in Lucerne, students are therefore obliged to take out a compulsory Swiss Health Insurance. For further details please consult the Health Insurance information sheet. Travel insurance taken out in your home country is not equivalent to a Swiss Health Insurance cover and cannot be accepted. Overseas Liability Insurance For exchange students who stay at an university dormitory, Personal Liability Insurance is mandatory. Personal Liability Insurance is not compulsory in Switzerland but it is however strongly recommended (e.g. especially when renting an apartment or room). Personal Liability Insurance offers an insurance cover in case of third party liability claims. Exchange students should check with their own liability insurance provider, whether the insurance coverage is sufficient for Switzerland. If the foreign liability insurance cover proves to be insufficient for Switzerland, exchange students will have to take out a Swiss Insurance. Visa Students from EU and EFTA countries need a valid passport or identity card to enter Switzerland. Students from countries with a visa requirement need to apply for a Swiss entry visa at the Swiss embassy or consulate general in their home country. Please allow at least three months to apply for your entry visa. Please note that students from the above mentioned countries cannot be matriculated at the University of Lucerne without a valid entry visa. If you are unsure whether or not you need a visa, please ask your local Swiss representation office page 4/5

5 Entering Registration Costs for the Communal Registration and Registration at the Immigration Office Scholarships available to Exchange Students Students from countries with a visa requirement can travel to Switzerland once the entry visa has been issued. Please note that it usually takes 6 to 12 weeks to obtain an entry visa. After entering Switzerland, all students are required to register at the registration office of their community of residence. Citizens of non-eu/efta-countries must also present themselves at the Office for Migration. The registration (approx. EUR 30-50), all officially issued documents (approx. EUR ) and the biometric data capture (approx. EUR 200) for students from third countries are chargeable and must be borne by the student. No scholarships are currently offered by the University of Lucerne. Study abroad reports Estimated Budget per month In these reports, mobility students describe their impressions and experiences during their exchange semester. The reports provide important information to students who are planning a mobility semester in the future: The cost of living will differ for each individual; however these figures should provide a rough idea. The data are guidelines (exchange rate CHF 1.13): Housing (incl.
