1 Unit 5: Participation in outdoor activities for public services (LEVEL 2) Learning outcomes By completing this unit candidates will develop knowledge, understanding and skills in an outdoor activity. Candidates are required to identify the factors to be taken into account when planning an activity and describe the clothing and equipment required by one activity. Finally candidates will need to participate in an outdoor activity and evaluate and reflect upon their present performance. Candidates will produce evidence to meet the unit assessment objectives in order to show that they understand: what is meant by outdoor activities how a chosen activity is organised within the United Kingdom important factors when planning an activity suitable clothing and equipment required how to write and maintain a record of their participation how to evaluate their own personal performance. Assessment objectives 1 Describe the range of outdoor activities and opportunities for regular participation Knowledge, understanding and skills Outdoor activities climbing watersports (canoeing, sailing) trekking caving mountaineering abseiling Description includes: accessibility initial costs facilities clubs and societies Assessment Objectives 2 to 5 are based upon an outdoor activity of the candidate s choice 2 Describe the organisational structure for UK participation in your chosen activity Organisation clubs and societies association structure individual participation group activities supporting organisations (eg YHA) national organisations (British Olympic Association) facilities (eg Holme Pierpoint for watersports) awards/qualifications OCR Level 2 Nationals in Public Services 1
2 Assessment objectives 3 Describe the factors to be taken into account when planning your outdoor activity and their relative importance 4 Justify what equipment is needed for the chosen activity 5 Identify possible hazards involved in participation in the activity and explain measures used to reduce risk 6 Use a diary/log to record your ongoing participation in an outdoor activity and evaluate own performance Knowledge, understanding and skills Factors including: suitably qualified instructors/leaders travel activity location times environmental conditions activity details equipment needed safety requirements what will be provided weather forecast accommodation and food emergency equipment Clothing and equipment specifications for major items safety and first aid equipment reasons for selection Hazards inappropriate supervision/tuition poor equipment unforeseen weather conditions illness poor organisation Measures to reduce risk: qualified instructors kit lists/equipment checks preparation and planning Record log/diary Practical ability record participation activities attempted involvement safety considerations basic technique used reflect on performance Evaluation includes strengths areas for improvement recommendations for future training and development needs techniques learned safety procedures significant events and personal achievements development of social and interpersonal skills 2 OCR Level 2 Nationals in Public Services
3 Assessment This unit is centre assessed and externally moderated. In order to achieve this unit candidates must produce a portfolio of evidence showing that they have met all of the assessment objectives. Portfolios of work must be produced independently. They will need to be made available, together with witness statements and any other supporting documentation, to the OCR Visiting Moderator when required. Centres must confirm to OCR that the evidence produced by candidates is authentic. An OCR Centre Authentication Form is provided in the Centre Handbook and includes a declaration for assessors to sign. It is a requirement of the QCA Common Criteria for all Qualifications that proof of authentication is received. Guidance on assessment and evidence requirements Centres should ensure that any outdoor activities undertaken are conducted in line with appropriate safety considerations. Supervision should be undertaken by appropriately qualified personnel. Access to the outdoor environment is essential for delivery of this unit. Outdoor activities must be undertaken in line with national governing body guidelines. All activities must be risk assessed. Centres without the necessary qualified staff may choose to deliver the practical part of this unit through a recognised outdoor activity centre or centres. When centres are used it is strongly recommended that they are licensed by the Adventure Activities Licensing Authority to ensure that candidates safety is a priority. Candidates may provide portfolio evidence for the assessment objectives of this unit using a range of presentation techniques. This will include written reports, assessor testimony/witness statements (may be supported by photography and/or video evidence). Where candidates demonstrate competence, centres should record skills demonstrated on appropriate recording documentation.
