Materials Required: Experiments for Chemistry 1152L, published for UNG and available in the bookstore Scientific Calculator Shared Class Files: Instructors\O\ohrenberg.c\Chem 1152 Lab Throughout the semester you will need to access the documents for this course located in the Shared Class Files. These can be accessed either through the Start Menu, if you are using a computer on campus, or through the link posted under the Remote Access drop down menu on the myung webpage. To get to the Shared Class Files through the Start Menu of a campus computer running Windows 10: Choose UNG Links Shared Class Files open with Internet Explorer III. Course Description Chemistry 1152L is the laboratory designed to be taken concurrently with CHEM Its main objective is to illustrate and reinforce many of the concepts taught in the lecture course. The lab meets once a week for 2 hours and carries one semester hour credit. This course requires concurrent registration with CHEM 1152 or previous credit for CHEM IV. Course Calendar Your instructor will post in the Shared File area a schedule of laboratory experiments for the semester. Please note that the schedule of experiments is subject to change to fit the needs of the course. V. Methods of Instruction The instructor will employ short lectures, question and answer, hands-on laboratory experiments to convey the content of this course. Models for building molecules may also be brought in occasionally. Classroom demonstrations of chemical or physical properties may also be employed. 1

2 VI. Course Objectives As the required lab for CHEM 1152, its main objective is to illustrate and reinforce the concepts taught in the lecture course. After completing this course, the student should be able to: 1. conduct laboratory experiments following all safety protocols, and following proper lab etiquette: such as replacing caps on bottles and how to handle coin-top stoppers 2. operate an electronic balance properly 3. use available technology (word processor, spreadsheet, , WWW, WebCT, etc.) to complete laboratory assignments 4. use all of the materials available in the library (not just the internet) to research a problem 5. complete laboratory exercises following the scientific method, including making observations and inferences, recording data properly, and using the data to draw conclusions and make predictions 6. use a computer and MPLI to collect data using properly calibrated probes and sensors 7. write and balance chemical equations 8. draw organic structural formulas, systematically name organic molecules, and differentiate among the various kinds of isomers 9. use physical properties to identify unknown organic compounds 10. use chemical reactions to identify unknown organic compounds 11. represent and carry out organic functional group transformations including esterification, halogenation, oxidations, saponification, and hydrolysis 12. measure and calculate ph 13. understand, represent, and investigate the behavior of acids, bases, and buffers in aqueous solution 14. investigate and discuss the behavior of chemical equilibria according to Le Chatelier s Principle 15. complete stoichiometric calculations related to formula, equations, and the mole concept 16. write a properly formatted formal lab report to present data, results, and conclusions along with experimental details VII. Course Policies This Supplemental Syllabus link provides additional information pertinent to this course including the policies regarding academic integrity, disruptive behavior in the classroom, inclement weather and notification of cancelled classes, and other important topics. 1. CELL PHONE POLICY Cell phones should not be used during lab. Students who repeatedly use a cell phone during lab will lose lab practice points and may be asked to leave lab. 2. DISRUPTIVE BEHAVIOR POLICY any behavior that disrupts the learning environment for or is unsafe will not be tolerated. The instructor reserves the right to remove any student from lab for unsafe or disruptive behavior. Being dismissed from lab for this 2

3 reason will be result in a score of ZERO on their laboratory report for that experiment. 3. ATTENDANCE POLICY You are expected to attend ALL the labs. At some point this semester something may arise, such as an illness, that may result in you missing lab. If this should happen, talk to me a soon as possible. If it is an excusable absence, than a makeup time for the lab will be scheduled. If this is not possible than other arrangements will be made so that you will not get a zero for that particular lab. a. Absences require a doctor s note or other documentation verifying the reason for your absence. b. If the absence is not excusable or you fail to talk to me about it, than you will receive a zero for the lab report that you missed. c. Performing an experiment at a time other than your regularly scheduled lab time without my permission will result in an unexcused absence and a zero for that experiment d. Should you miss lab for any reason and not make it up, you will forfeit ALL the lab practices grade for that experiment. Should you make up the lab with another instructor you will lose HALF of the points because I cannot witness your performance. e. If you miss more than 2 labs for any reason you may receive an F in the course. 4. PREGNANCY / MEDICAL INFORMATION POLICY It is the students responsibility to notify the instructor concerning any medical problems which may affect your performance in lab, represent a safety hazard for you or your classmates, or limit your participation in particular laboratory activities These may include, but are not limited to pregnancy, physical disabilities, seizures, and allergies. (Any student who is pregnant upon entering or becomes pregnant while enrolled in this class should notify the instructor as soon as possible.) 5. SAFETY POLICY The Lab Safety Policy of the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry is found on page 3 of the lab manual. Each student will be required to sign a statement stating that they have read and understand the policy and agree to abide by it. Failure to abide by the policy will result in expulsion from the lab. If you are expelled, you will not receive credit for the lab, even if there is a quiz the next week. Students who are expelled from two labs will receive an "F" for the course. 6. DRESS CODE In order to maintain your safety a dress code is strictly enforced. The general idea is that you are covered from head to toe. Your clothing should completely cover your shoulders, chest, back, waist, legs, and feet at all times. Shirts need sleeves and should meet your pants. No open-toed shoes or shorts are allowed. You will not be allowed to participate in lab if you are not properly dressed. 3

4 VIII. Evaluation Methods and Course Grading Your grade will be based on a 1000 point scale broken down as follows: Lab Reports = 550 pts. Pre-Lab Assignments = 100 pts. Lab etiquette = 150 pts. Lab Practical (at the end of the semester) = 200 pts pts. Lab reports will be worth 50 points each and pre-labs, 10 points each. Not every lab has a Pre-lab assignment, but most do. Come prepared What s in Billy Bob s Barn will be a typed report worth 100 pts. w/ a 20 pt. pre-lab Lab Etiquette/Practices At the start of the semester you will begin with 150 lab practice points. Some of the ways you can lose these points are as follows: Repeatedly not wearing safety goggles. Making a mess and not cleaning it up. Careless or unsafe practices. Pouring chemicals back into the bottles. Leaving equipment or chemicals out. Showing up late. Showing up dressed improperly. Coming unprepared for the experiment. Using your cell phone You may also earn additional points for exceptional performance or behavior beyond what is required of you. Lab Reports 1. Pre-Lab exercises are due when you come to lab. If it is not done by the beginning of lab or you are late, you will receive no points for the pre-lab. However, I may still require that you complete it before beginning the experiment. 2. Lab Reports are due the same day, before you leave lab, unless otherwise stated. 3. Keep it neat and orderly. If I have difficult time finding or reading the information in your report, you will lose points. If you make a lot of mistakes in your writing, do not write in pen. Use a pencil instead. 4. Organize the data and calculations in an easily read format. That often means tables. 5. Include units with all numerical data and calculated values. 6. Record all numerical data to the proper number of significant figures. Use all the precision your equipment will allow you. 7. Show all calculations clearly! If you need to perform a series of the same calculation on repeat trials of the same measurements, you only need to show one calculation and the results from the rest. 8. Explain your answers and write in complete sentences when answering discussion questions. 4

5 9. When making observations be as specific as possible. Answer the questions Where? When? and What? Simply stating It turned blue is not sufficient. A better observation would be, The solution turned blue instantly upon adding the hydrochloric acid. 10. In some cases you will be asked to write out your procedure. Be as specific as possible as to what actions were, or are to be performed. I should be able to read your procedure and repeat exactly what you did. 11. DO NOT write on ANYTHING other than your lab notebook pages. Do not record data anywhere else. Do not write calculations, procedures, or observation on another sheet of paper first and then copy them into your lab report. If I catch you doing this I will take away the paper and you will lose 5 lab practice points for the day.
