1 KERN COMMUNITY COLLEGE DISTRICT BAKERSFIELD COLLEGE MCAG B2: Introduction to Mechanized Agriculture Class Syllabus Course Description Basic mechanical skills in woodworking, cold metal, electricity, plumbing, concrete, and project construction skills as related to farm maintenance and repair. Development of hand and power tool skills as well as emphasis on safety practices for all mechanical areas. Laboratory required. (ISBN ) Course requirements and expectations: 1. Attend lectures, labs, and field trips. a. Anyone who has scheduling problems will be required to get any class lecture and/or lab information from other classmates. If you anticipate missing any classes, they must be cleared one week prior to the scheduled event unless otherwise noted in the assignments. Students are still responsible for all work missed. Attendance will be taken each class period. i. Tests can only be made up with an exceptionally legitimate excuse. Plan on providing documentation (doctor s note, police report ). Page 1 of 6
2 Page 2 of 6 b. The instructor will begin the course at the designated hour. Arriving late is disruptive. Leaving laboratory sessions early will result in point reduction for attendance. 2. Class Structure a. This class is a hybrid-moodle course. I will be posting valuable information online. Several assignments will be turned in through the Moodle system. Having consistent access to a computer is strongly encouraged. i. The instructor is not responsible for technical issues the student may encounter with any computer or with Internet access. 3. Communication a. The best way to contact me is via or my office number above. I do not communicate by texting. It is my goal to respond in 1 working day or less to inquiries. 4. Complete work assignments on time. a. Late assignments will lose 10% of the total grade each class day late. No late work is accepted more than a week after it is due. Moodle assignments will be irrevocably closed 7 days after the assignment is due. b. For excused absences, missing assignments are due the day upon return to class. 5. Cell Phones. a. Turn off cell phones or put them on silent / vibrate before entering the classroom. No texting, use of cell phones or electronic devices during class. b. The use of electronic devices during class, tests or quizzes could result in automatic failure in the class. 6. Dropping Class a. It is the Ag Department policy to drop students who miss more than two weeks of class (before the final drop date) without a written excuse. The final date to drop the class and still get a W is October 31st. However, I will never drop students for poor grades; that is the student s responsibility. I will warn students with poor performance several times during the course and suggest ways to improve those grades during office hours. 7. Checking grades throughout the semester a. It is the student s responsibility to maintain graded assignments and develop an understanding of their grade during the semester. b. I do not discuss individual grades during class time. If you have individual questions regarding your performance, see me during my office hours. 8. Required Tools and Clothing a. The school will provide i. 1 pr. Personal eye protection goggles/glasses (OSHA approved for shop work). ii. Welding equipment (if time permits) 1. Gauntlet-style leather gloves for welding 2. Welding helmet b. Each student will be expected to provide the following personal materials for the course: i. 1 ea. - 3-ring notebook for course lab packet materials and handouts
3 ii. Long-sleeved work shirt - cotton preferred (when welding) iii. Trousers without cuffs, or coveralls iv. Work shoes (boots) over ankle tops or high top leather shoes laced up 9. Safety a. State law requires that safety glasses be worn at all times in the laboratory. Hardened prescription lenses are not satisfactory protection. Wear only shatter resistant glasses. Welding operations require wearing heat resistant gloves, hightop shoes or boots, long-sleeve garments and trousers without cuffs. Light weight coveralls are good protection. b. Students that not prepared with safety equipment will not be allowed to work in the lab. i. SAFETY VIOLATIONS CAN BE CAUSE FOR DISMISSAL FROM COURSE. 10. Clean Up a. Each student is responsible for cleaning his/her own work station. In addition, special clean-up stations will be assigned for a specified time period. A class foreman will be responsible for all clean-up activities. Clean-up will commence 15 minutes prior to securing the period's activities. b. All students are expected to remain after Lab Cleanup for any special announcements and dismissal by the instructor. c. Leaving early will result in point deduction. 11. Academic Integrity a. It is expected that each student s work will be their own, and appropriately represented as such. It is expected that the work of others, which may be included in a student s work, is appropriately cited. Plagiarism and/or cheating will result in the loss of all points for the assignment on which it occurs. 12. Habits of Mind a. How will you succeed at BC this semester? What determines success is not circumstance, but habit. Habits of Mind, It s POSSIBLE at BC has many free tools intended to help you accomplish your goals in school. Identify and demonstrate proper use, care, and adjustment of common and precision tools and machines found in the farm shop. 4. Compute common shop problems regarding measuring and ordering supplies and equipment for given applications. 5. Demonstrate ability to communicate and work cooperatively with others. 6. Identify safe shop practices and potentially hazardous safety conditions in the shop. 7. Prepare a simple three dimensional drawing showing top, end, and side views. 8. Apply the techniques of sharpening and refitting common farm tools. 9. Explain the methods of painting, types of paints, their preferred uses, and cleanup procedures. 10. Select the most adequate (cost and quality) supplies (lumber, steel, materials) for a given situation fence, building, etc. 11. Identify types of threads and properly use taps, dies, twist drills, and common fasteners. Measure and thread pipe, and correctly identify the more commonly used fittings. 12.
