6 8 Universidad Católica Argentina Regarding your request, it is important that you know that UCA local students don't have credit system, it is only valid for exchange students. I know this may sound strange, but regarding the rules established by the national authorities in higher education, undergraduate students have to attend a minimum of 1600 contact hours in order to obtain their degree. Master students have to attend a minimum of 540 contact hours hours of research. As you may see, our system is quite different. At UCA, local students (undergraduate and postgraduate) don't earn credits for the courses they take, they just get a final mark and once they attend and approve all the courses required -that is, the attendance to the minimum (or more) contact hours required, and the approval of midterm and final exams- they obtain their degree. Only for exchange students, 1 class hour = 1 UCA credit. Exchange students have to take at least 12 contact hours per week (= 12 credits) in order to be considered full time students. UCA undergraduate students attend an average of contact hours per week, per semester. Please, be aware that this is an average; due to different reasons, some students take less courses per semester (for example 3 instead of 4) and therefore they extend their studies. 1 Questions concerning the credit system (Bachelor level) 1 a) How many years of study comprises your Bachelor degree? 32 34 McGill University 1) Questions concerning the credit system (Bachelor level) a) How many years of study comprises your Bachelor degree? This is a difficult question to answer since it depends on the program, if the student is from Quebec or not and if the student is on a full-time or part-time basis. However, generally, a full-time student who is taking 15 credits per semester will complete their bachelor s degree of 120 credits in 4 years and a student from Quebec with the same conditions will complete it in 3 years. I believe this quote from our course calendar sums it up the best: A typical undergraduate degree at McGill is credits (four years of full-time study). Quebec CEGEP students typically receive 30 credits of Advanced Standing, so they will usually only have a further credits (three years of full-time study) to complete. This varies by faculty, so consult your faculty section. In your first year, you will be placed in U1 (undergraduate year 1). Most other students typically have credits to complete. This varies by faculty, so consult your faculty section. In your first year, you will be placed in U0 (undergraduate year 0), which is often referred to in this publication and elsewhere as your freshman year. Many students at McGill come with other forms of Advanced Standing (International Baccalaureate, French Baccalaureate, advanced placement exams, or students admitted from other universities as transfer students). If this is your case, you will receive information during the admissions process. b) How many credits must a student obtain per semester and per academic year in order to succeed? Regarding a fulltime course load. Full-time students in Satisfactory Standing take a minimum of 12 credits per term. (A normal course load is considered to be 15 credits per term.) c) How many hours of studying equals one (1) credit? If possible please make a distinction between hours spent on lectures and hours spent on private study. In general, a three-credit course indicates three hours of lectures per week for one term but this does not apply to all faculties. Laboratory contact hours usually count for fewer credits. Credits also reflect the amount of effort required of the student and generally assume two hours of personal study for each contact hour.
33 35 d) How many weeks constitute your semester? There is a full 13-week term (equivalent to 39 contact hours for a 3-credit course). In the event that the schedule for a particular pattern does not permit 39 contact hours or that courses must be cancelled (on an election Monday, for example), Faculties shall have the discretion to determine how the missing hour(s) shall be made up. e) Could you provide a link to this information on your website? You should refer to the undergraduate course calendar. 2) Questions concerning the credit system (Master level) a) How many years of study comprises your Master degree? Residence Requirements Master's Degrees Refers to the number of terms (or years) students must be registered on a full-time basis to complete their program. Students are NOT permitted to graduate until they have fulfilled the residence requirement (or paid the corresponding fees) in their program. The following master's programs have a minimum residence requirement of three full-time terms: M.Arch, M.A., M.Eng., LL.M., M.Mus. (except M.Mus. in Sound Recording), M.Sc., M.S.W., M.Sc.A. (except M.Sc.A. in Communication Sciences and Disorders). The following master's programs have a minimum residence requirement of four full-time terms: M.L.I.S.; M.Mus. in Sound Recording; M.U.P.; M.A. (60 credits Counselling Psychology thesis; 78 credits Educational Psychology); M.A. Teaching and Learning Non-Thesis; M.Sc.A. in Communication Sciences and Disorders; S.T.M., Religious Studies. The residence requirement for the master's program in Education (M.Ed.); Library and Information Studies (M.L.I.S.); Management (M.B.A.); Religious Studies (S.T.M.); M.A. Counselling Psychology Non-Thesis; M.A. Teaching and Learning Non-Thesis; M.Sc. in Public Health Non-Thesis; M.Sc.A. Nursing; M.Sc.A. Occupational Therapy; M.Sc.A. Physical Therapy; and students in part-time programs is determined on a per course basis. Residence requirements are fulfilled when students complete all course requirements in their respective programs.
34 36 For master's programs structured as Course, Project or Non-Thesis options where the program is pursued on a part-time basis, residence requirements are normally fulfilled when students complete all course requirements in their respective programs (minimum 45 credits or a minimum of three full-time terms) and pay the fees accordingly. These designated periods of residence represent minimum time requirements. There is no guarantee that the work for the degree can be completed in this time. Students must register for such additional terms as are needed to complete the program. b) How many credits must a student obtain per semester and per academic year in order to succeed? Regarding a fulltime course load. Full-time students are students with a registration status of fulltime and paying full-time fees. Fulltime master's, diploma and certificate candidates must show a minimum of 12 credits per term on their record. c) How many hours of studying equals one (1) credit? If possible please make a distinction between hours spent on lectures and hours spent on private study. In general, a three-credit course indicates three hours of lectures per week for one term but this does not apply to all faculties. Laboratory contact hours usually count for fewer credits. Credits also reflect the amount of effort required of the student and generally assume two hours of personal study for each contact hour. d) How many weeks constitute your semester? E.g or A+ / A / B etc. A to F. b) How does your grading system compare to the European 1-10 system? Please refer to pages in the undergraduate calendar. See attachment.

42 44 McMaster University 1. Questions concerning the credit system (Bachelor level) a) How many years of study comprises your Bachelor degree? It depends on the area of study. Generally, Bachelors degrees take 3 years of study to complete, with an additional year to make it an Honours Bachelor. Keep in mind some programs (E.g. within Engineering) are 5-year degrees. Business degree is 4 years (B. Com or H.B.Com) b) How many credits must a student obtain per semester and per academic year in order to succeed? Regarding a fulltime course load. A full-time course load at McMaster is considered 18 or more units. If you are taking 1-17 units, you will be considered a part-time student. c) How many hours of studying equals one (1) credit? If possible please make a distinction between hours spent on lectures and hours spent on private study. Classes generally have approximately 3 hours of lecture per week, in addition to an additional hour of tutorial. The amount of individual study fluctuates between specific classes, ranging from 2-5 hours per class. d) How many weeks constitute your semester? Both semester 1 and semester 2 are usually 62 days. e) Could you provide a link to this information on your website? Faculty/program websites: Sessional dates:
43 45 2. Questions concerning the credit system (Master level) a) How many years of study comprises your Master degree? Depending on the program, a Masters degree takes 1-2 years b) How many credits must a student obtain per semester and per academic year in order to succeed? Regarding a fulltime course load. This information depends heavily on the program of study. Only some programs offer part-time studies. MBA 5 courses per term c) How many hours of studying equals one (1) credit? If possible please make a distinction between hours spent on lectures and hours spent on private study. This information depends heavily on the program of study. MBA 3 hrs per week and extra time for group work d) How many weeks constitute your semester? This information depends heavily on the program of study. 45 47 Simon Fraser University 1 Questions concerning the credit system (Bachelor level) 1 a) How many years of study comprises your Bachelor degree? 4 years. b) How many credits must a student obtain per semester and per academic year in order to succeed? Regarding a fulltime course load. SFU is on a trimester system consisting of 3 equal full-time terms per year. A "full course load" is 30 units (our word for "credits") per year, or 15 units per term. But to be a "full-time student" there is a minimum of 9 units per term. We encourage inbound exchange students to enroll in 9-12 units (3-4 courses) if allowed by their home institution. A 15-unit course load (ie a "full course load") is a very heavy workload. As above, a Bachelor's degree takes 4 years to complete (based on 30 units per year), however, due to our trimester system it is possible for students to complete a Bachelor's degree in less time if they so choose. c) How many hours of studying equals one (1) credit? If possible please make a distinction between hours spent on lectures and hours spent on private study. Normally 1 credit = 1 contact hour per week, however, this varies greatly by department and faculty. This is not a dependable measure to use when calculating equivalent credits from SFU. d) How many weeks constitute your semester? 15 weeks: 13 weeks of classes and 2 weeks of exams. e) Could you provide a link to this information on your website? 2 Questions concerning the credit system (Master level) 2 a) How many years of study comprises your Master degree? Varies by degree. Most are 2 years.
