LeBeL, PHd department of marketing 2005, 2010 recipient distinguished TeAChing AWArd mba students at Jmsb keep you on your toes; that s why i love teaching here. i approach each term and each lecture with renewed enthusiasm. i love changing my syllabi and refreshing course material and lecture content to refl ect current practices and thinking, and then seeing how students react. The face of marketing is changing at an incredible rate and i m always amazed at how much our students know. i am surprised and inspired by the kinds of things they pick up on and they re involved in. Whether i m teaching the introductory marketing course or my experience marketing elective, i believe in distributed learning: setting up a classroom atmosphere where you share and learn from each other. Above all, i try to set up lectures where material is relevant, where theory comes to life and where practice and pressing social and global challenges shape the questions and issues that need to be addressed. using unusual and fun exercises, whether it s a chocolate sampling or a smell test that pits women versus men, can also make the material engaging and the lesson more memorable. The fact that our mba students are eager, motivated and curious, makes it all the more rewarding to teach here. LeA PReVeL katsanis, PHd AssoCiATe Professor, department of marketing The mba program is very important to me personally not only have i taught in the program for 19 years, i also served as its director. i teach pharmaceutical marketing and bring both my research and previous industry experience as a marketing executive to the classroom. i hope to make the subject come alive with relevant guest speakers, interesting cases and class discussions on current issues facing this industry. one of my goals as a professor is to share knowledge with my students that they would not be able to acquire on their own. no less important a goal is to help them learn from one another peer learning is an important part of our program. our students bring a wealth of experiences with them to the classroom and they have much to share. We offer small classes and a warm, approachable faculty. our professors establish strong and long-lasting relationships with our students. i have had the privilege of working with students long after they graduate i have consulted with some and written articles with others. Applicants are assessed on their strong intellectual abilities, leadership and managerial promise, career focus and interpersonal and communications skills. business work experience is an important consideration, as is active community involvement (although not a requirement). The mandate of the John molson graduate students Association (JmgsA) is to: Act as the official representative organization for all John molson graduate students on all committees, boards or constituted bodies Promote the academic, cultural, recreational, political and social interests of the members, thereby improving student lifestyles and augmenting school spirit facilitate communication and cooperation among the graduate student associations and representatives, and to maximize synergies among existing programs improve the Jmsb brand name in the national and global business and academic communities The JmgsA executive Council currently consists of a president, vice-president academic, vice-president communication, vice-president administration and finance, and a representative of each of the commerce graduate programs. for more information, visit jmgsa.ca Heidi GuNkeL, mba CAndidATe 2013 legal Advisor, bloomfield & AvoCATs i came to montreal three years ago with a german law degree and have been working in the field of corporate law ever since. i started my mba in January 2011, when i decided to enhance my law career with a management degree, as i felt that i was lacking certain managerial and analytical knowledge. A great asset of the program is its flexible structure: even though i am working full time, i am able to take three courses per term, as many of the classes are offered at night. Apart from academic knowledge in a broad variety of business contexts, i feel that one of the most valuable and rewarding experiences is the social aspect of the mba program at Jmsb. Through the interactive nature of most classes, i have met people from various backgrounds and nationalities, and have made many friends. The mba program offers numerous beyond the classroom projects. Currently i am member of the Women in business Club (WibC) and am the communications officer of the international Community outreach Program (icop). Another great aspect of the program is the opportunity to take part in exchange programs, and to complete credits outside of the classroom. last summer i went to new York City as part of the exchange program with the levin institute, where i took classes in international marketing, management, and finance. As part of the mba Csi (Community service initiative), i have been given the opportunity to establish a market-entry plan for an indonesian company. 14 mba society The mba society is dedicated to enriching the mba experience by providing students with opportunities to develop managerial experience and establish strong relationships with future leaders. it encourages greater interaction between students, alumni, recruiters, guest speakers and the business community. The mba society consists of a president and six vice presidents who are individually responsible in managing operations, acting as liaison with Career management services, providing opportunities in attending case competitions, addressing students academic concerns, offering interesting events and networking opportunities, and in maintaining communication with the student body. This year s objectives include promoting the Jmsb brand, increasing international opportunities, and creating philanthropic initiatives. ARHuM NOMANi, mba CAndidATe 2012 ConsulTAnT, ConCordiA small business ConsulTing bureau i graduated from the John molson school of business with a bachelor of Commerce degree in finance. having worked with fortune 500 companies, as well as small to mid-sized businesses in north America and Asia, i have amassed four years of combined experience in finance, sales and marketing. As a current mba student specializing in strategic management, i am actively involved in the graduate student governing body. 15 carole charbonneau, mba 2009 PresidenT, everenergy before coming to the mba at Jmsb i had a background in business-to-business sales and was looking for a way to move into management by learning the fundamentals of business. during my mba, i focused on strategic management and did a lot of extracurricular work doing case competitions and starting and managing a couple of new school clubs/organizations. i can definitely say it was worthwhile. The management skills i learned and most importantly the contacts i made were critical in putting together the tools, skills and network that allow me to run my own solar energy company today. i started my business about six months after graduating with two of my mba colleagues and have already recruited a fourth partner. 16 mba The John molson ProgrAm The John molson mba is a 57-credit program. full-time students usually complete the program within 16 months to two years; part-time students generally take three to fi ve years. ACCelerATed mba ProgrAm The accelerated mba program consists of 45 credits. Admitted students are credited four core courses based on the concentration and marks obtained in their undergraduate degree. Credited courses may vary from one student to another. full-time students usually complete the program within 12 to 16 months; part-time students generally take two to three years. To be eligible for the accelerated program, students must have completed a Canadian or American undergraduate degree in commerce (i.e. bcomm or badmin) within the last six years and must have earned a minimum gpa of 3.3/4.3 as well as obtained a gmat score of at least 600. SHAWNA ROSe, mba 2010 ProJeCT manager, banking industry 86.1% Percentage of Jmsb mba graduates are employed within three months of graduation obtaining my mba at the John molson school of business equipped me with the skills, knowledge and confi dence to further my career and take on an exciting managerial position after completing my studies. i strongly believe that Jmsb s unique case method approach to educating its students greatly improved my ability to understand and analyze today s complex business issues. 17 mba Core Courses (39 CrediTs or 27 CrediTs for ACCelerATed ProgrAm) mba 606 MANAGeRiAL economics This course begins with the introduction of supply and demand and the concept of elasticity. The theory of consumer behaviour is covered and is followed by production theory in both the short run and long run. Price and output decisions are described in perfect competition, monopoly, monopolistic competition, and oligopoly. mba 607 FiNANciAL AccOuNtiNG FOR MANAGeRiAL decisions This course provides an overview of the corporate external fi nancial reporting system and the managerial objectives of the corporate fi nancial statement, with emphasis on the examination of major gaaps and comparing them to actual corporate reporting practices. The roles and information needs of management, government and auditors are studied, as is the process for developing and enforcing generally accepted accounting standards, both legal and professional. mba 608 StAtiSticAL MOdeLS FOR BuSiNeSS decisions This course concentrates on the applications of probability and statistics in managerial decision-making, with their implementation in marketing, fi nance and operations management. Topics include descriptive measures, random variables and probability distribution, estimation, hypothesis testing, analysis of variance, regression and correlation analyses, times-series analysis and forecasting techniques. The mba program is made up of 13 core courses (9 for accelerated), which provide students with an integrated body of basic practical skills covering all aspects of business administration. mba 609 ORGANiZAtiONAL BeHAViOuR organizational behaviour investigates the impact that individuals, groups and structure have on behaviour within an organization, and then applies that knowledge to improve an organization s effectiveness using social and behavioural principles. Topics include perception, work attitudes, motivation, leadership, group dynamics, and the management of change, using a mixture of discussion, case analyses and experiential exercises. mba 610 MARketiNG MANAGeMeNt This course targets the strategic role of marketing for any fi rm, emphasizing the cultivation of marketing management skills and perspectives. All aspects of marketing opportunities, target markets, marketing strategies and programs, and marketing efforts are studied with a blend of lectures, cases, readings and papers. mba 614 FiNANciAL MANAGeMeNt This foundation course provides a framework for making corporate investment, fi nancing and risk management decisions, with the objective of maximizing company value, and a discussion of the practical decisions facing fi nancial managers in large and small enterprises. Topics explored include securities and options valuation, capital budgeting, asset pricing, capital structure and dividend policy decisions. the John molson mba 15

18 mba Core Courses (ConTinued) mba 615 MANAGeMeNt information SYSteMS management information systems deal with the coordination and use of information, information technology and people. This course introduces mis core concepts and principles and elaborates on the roles of both the mis department and the people in the organization. both practical and theoretical models are used to illustrate and apply knowledge to common mis issues in organizations. mba 616 OPeRAtiONS MANAGeMeNt This course deals with the quantitative and qualitative techniques used in business to achieve efficient and effective utilization of scarce resources. Planning, management and control of labour, machinery, information and time resources in the manufacturing and service sectors are studied. mba 618 NAtiONAL ANd international economics This course explores the causes of economic growth and decline in firms and industries, with emphasis on international factors. Topics covered include the constituent parts of national output, inflation and unemployment, money and interest rates, exchange rate determination, balance of payment issues and the theory of international trade. mba 622 BuSiNeSS POLicY ANd StRAteGY This course integrates the core functional disciplines of business within a strategic perspective and introduces strategic management concepts including industry analysis and dynamics, organizational resource audit, strategic typologies and management of strategic transformations. The course develops the student s ability in problem identification, environmental and organizational analyses, strategic alternative formulation and action implementation. mba 625 MANAGiNG StRAteGic ActiON This course delves into the process by which strategic intent and strategy are linked to managerial action in social responsibility. it centers on the development of strategic action in response to issues emanating from the broader external environment and the implementation of action programs in organizations. managing social responsibility, economic and social regulations and technological change are related to functional strategies, organizational structure, performance evaluation and management systems. mba 628 MANAGeMeNt AccOuNtiNG This course focuses on the use of accounting data and analytical techniques. These are required to provide information for internal decision-making in organizations from the viewpoint of the user. Topics covered include the nature and behaviour of costs, types of costing systems, short-run and long-run decision-making, budgeting, responsibility accounting and control systems. mba 691 BuSiNeSS ethics business ethics are coming under greater scrutiny in the press as scandals involving insider trading, questionable business practices and accounting fraud come to light. This course assists students in the appreciation of the ethical implications of their actions, through ethical theory and its practical applications in business. A high level of student involvement is required, including participation in group debates, mini-presentations and case discussions. mba non-core Courses (18 CrediTs) mba students have the opportunity to choose between a variety of electives and out-of-classroom activities to complete the 57-credit (45-credit for accelerated) program. The options are listed below. StANdARd course electives (up To 6 Courses) each year, new and timely elective courses are added to the curriculum. 19 MBA case competition executives (3 CrediTs) four students are selected yearly as special assistants to the senior organizers. Their responsibilities are to help the organizers in welldefined roles. ReSeARcH PAPeR (6 CrediTs) students can select a topic of their choice and work one-onone with a professor on a research paper. Currently, Zenergy Communications is offering a $2,000 best Paper Award for those writing in the area of environmental sustainability. SMALL BuSiNeSS consulting BuReAu (3 CrediTs) students can be selected to be part of the mba small business Consulting bureau. This bureau handles individual requests and performs consulting work for the community on a fee-paying basis. MBA community SeRVice initiative: internship (3 CrediTs) This exciting element was added to the mba program in students provide in-depth consulting for credit, primarily in the not-for-profit sector. The two-pronged goal is to create an applied learning experience for students and to provide a useful service to the community. find out more about mba Csi on page 18. MBA PRActicuM (3 CrediTs) The Practicum is designed as a special work-related activity that requires students to meet with senior business managers and work with them over two terms to help solve business problems. MBA co-op (not CrediTed, but salaried) The institute for Co-operative education is responsible for linking the employer and the mba student. The student selects the position of interest that is posted by the institute and is assisted in interviewing skills before an interview is held. The work term is normally one semester long. special mba-related positions are available. international exchange OPtiON (CrediTed) students have the option to study abroad with the prior permission of the program director. upon approval, courses successfully completed abroad are credited as electives. many first-class universities around the world have made special agreements with the business school for our students to study at their institution while paying Canadian tuition rates. 20 beyond The ClAssroom John molson mba CommuniTY service initiative The mba Community service initiative (mba Csi) encourages and promotes community service and links the resources of Jmsb at Concordia university with the needs of communities, organizations, small businesses, institutions and industries. dave MckeNZie founder And CoordinATor, Jmsb mba CommuniTY service initiative in three short years, mba Csi has become an important thread within the fabric of the mba program. over 45 of our top students have completed internships (Community service electives). They are spreading the word about the invaluable experiences that they have gained and they continue to request that Csi become a compulsory part of the mba program. Through our not-for-profit showcase event and our volunteer and service activities we have welcomed and worked with over 30 community service agencies and organizations and we are now recognized as the point of contact for interns, volunteers, information and referral and other forms of assistance. our Community economic development program has allowed us to take the Jmsb out of our building and into communities like little burgundy in montreal s south-west, where faculty have trained entrepreneurs on how to become better business persons, and into the north, where they trained Cree managers to improve their leadership and administrative skills. our students have also been engaged in the field as training consultants, conducting evaluations and assisting notfor-profit organizations in developing their annual reports. 18 the John molson mba mba Csi activities and interventions continue to play a key role in the improvement of the Jmsb s rankings on the Corporate Knights survey and with other ranking agencies and our learning objectives are consistent with and support Concordia university s strategic direction of Community engagement and social responsibility.

22 cynthia HOMAN, AdulT development department director, TYndAle st-georges CommuniTY CenTer MARiA claudia MONtAÑO, mba 2011 i fi rst got involved with the Community service initiative through its 695i-internship. i was part of a team of three interns working with the Trade facilitation offi ce (Tfo) Canada to develop a customized market-entry strategy for a company based in ecuador. We had to analyze industry trends, competitors, distribution channels, pricing structures and provide potential buyer leads in order to come up with the best recommendation to guide the company into establishing a successful business venture in the Canadian market. i was also involved in a pilot project for the Csi s Community and economic development Training Programs. i was part of a team of two training consultants who helped three local non-for-profi t organizations develop their annual reports to help these organizations communicate their accomplishments to current and potential donors and support their fundraising efforts. overall, the Csi is a great opportunity for students to gain practical experience by working with real clients and providing a relevant service to organizations in developing countries and in the montreal community. for over four years we have been working closely with the Jmsb mba Csi department through our relationship with mr. dave mckenzie. it is hard to put into words what this partnership has meant to the community of little burgundy and the participants of the Tyndale st-georges Adult development department. our fi rst project together was a case study of our nearly new store Tyndale Treasures. This study allowed us to defi ne how we can provide affordable clothing to our community and also bring in monies to support the services we provide to the community. We realized that through the Community service initiative we would be able to answer a need for our community members to become entrepreneurs. many members of our community will never get the opportunity to attend the mba program at Jmsb but have a viable idea to start their own businesses. mr. mckenzie believes as i do that the entrepreneurial spirit is internal and that with the right training, a person who truly wants to can have his or her own business. out of this we developed the mba Csi entrepreneurial Program targeting people who face barriers such as poverty and lack of education. for the past two years, we have had 17 people complete the training with their business plan in hand. six of these have opened their businesses and we are working with the others to help them to continue their dream to operate their own businesses. The Csi program truly gives back to the community. our mandate at Tyndale st-georges is to provide the tools for people to make a difference in their lives. 23 internship Jmsb sustainable ProgrAm The Jmsb sustainable internship Program is a joint initiative between the david o brien Centre for sustainable enterprise (docse) and Jmsb s Career management services (Cms). The program gives students the opportunity to gain valuable and related hands-on experience within the domain of sustainability. All internships deal with the following fi elds: sustainability, Csr, ethics, diversity, social economy, social entrepreneurship, socioeconomic development and/or related issues. The intern will have the opportunity to work on diverse projects and tasks during the internship period.
