1 Fairview English Department Honors Program Book List and Summer Reading Assignments, Grades 9-12 General The information below articulates the literature which will be read in advanced English courses at Fairview High School. Parents and students should make their best effort to obtain the exact editions listed below so that students have them in class when discussions and seminars are taking place. The students can take part in these discussions more readily if they have the same editions with the same page numbers in class. We strongly encourage students to purchase all texts prior to the beginning of the school year to avoid a lack of availability later in the year. Texts are available at local bookstores. If you choose to order online, please search by the ISBN number, rather than by the book title. Searches by book title do not always bring up all available editions. PIB 9 Language Arts by George Orwell; Publisher: Plume 60th Anniversary edition; ISBN: Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck; Publisher: Penguin; ISBN: An adult-level book of your choice fiction or nonfiction (see notes below). Please read, but do not annotate, the three books listed above. Students will take comprehension tests on Of Mice and Men and 1984 during the first week of school in August. We will read the novels a second time during the school year to give direct instruction in the fundamentals of annotation. Notes on Choice Book: We hope you can find a book that you will truly enjoy. During the first month of school, each student will present a book talk to the class on their choice book. Please DO NOT read the following for your choice book: 1. A play or book of poetry 2. The Odyssey by Homer 3. Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston 4. A novel or work of nonfiction classified as Young Adult by the publisher (if you re not sure whether or not a book is YA, look carefully at the publishing information at the front of the book, or online). For a list of recommended books, go to Ms. Roitz s website, accessible through the Fairview High School website. Look for the document titled Recommended Choice Books for Summer Reading. 1. The Odyssey by Homer (trans. Fagles): Publisher: Penguin Classics; ISBN:

2 2. Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston; Publisher: Harper Perennial; ISBN: Much Ado About Nothing by William Shakespeare; Publisher: Cambridge School Shakespeare (Cambridge University Press); ISBN: Pre IB 10 Language Arts REQUIRED SUMMER READING 1. Kaffir Boy by Mark Mathabane; Publisher: Touchstone; ISBN: Students will take comprehension test on Kaffir Boy during the first week of school in August. 1. Macbeth by William Shakespeare; Publisher: Cambridge School Shakespeare (Cambridge University Press); ISBN: The Metamorphosis and Other Stories by Franz Kafka (trans. Appelbaum); Publisher: Dover; ISBN: Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontë; Publisher: Penguin Classics; ISBN: One Day In the Life of Ivan Denisovich by Alexander Solzhenitsyn (trans. Willetts); Publisher: Farrar, Straus and Giroux; ISBN: The Glass Castle: A Memoir by Jeannette Walls; Publisher: Scribner; ISBN: IB 11 Language Arts Students need the specified translation, and not an alternate one. 1. Crime and Punishment by Fyodor Dostoevsky (trans. Pevear & Volokhonsky); Publisher: Vintage Classics; ISBN: Song of Solomon by Toni Morrison; Publisher: Vintage International; ISBN: Please be prepared for an exam on both texts on the first day of class. 1. Annotate and make interactive reading visible by underlining, writing margin notes, and posing questions in both Behind the Beautiful Forevers and The Cheating Culture. Be prepared for an exam on both texts the first day of class. 1. Black Boy by Richard Wright; Publisher: Harper Perennial; ISBN: The Influencing Machine by Brooke Gladstone; Publisher: Norton; ISBN: The Scarlet Letter and Other Writings by Nathaniel Hawthorne; Publisher: Norton Critical; ISBN: The Crucible by Arthur Miller; Publisher: Penguin; ISBN: The Awakening with a Selection of Short Stories by Kate Chopin; Publisher: Bantam Classic; ISBN: IB LA Hamlet by William Shakespeare; Publisher: Cambridge School Shakespeare (Cambridge University Press); ISBN:

4 2. Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead by Tom Stoppard; Publisher: Grove Press; ISBN: Read Hamlet before reading Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead. Be prepared for an exam on both texts the first day of class. Ideas and questions to consider as you read: 1) Think of these as plays that are performed rather than as novels. 2) Consider the cultural context when were the plays written, who were the playwrights, what were their aims? 3) How and why do the playwrights utilize literary and dramatic techniques (characterization, plot, diction, imagery, syntax, structure, tone, symbolism, theme)? 1. Heart of Darkness and Selections from The Congo Diary by Joseph Conrad; Publisher: Modern Library Classics; ISBN: Waiting for Godot by Samuel Beckett; Publisher: Grove Press; ISBN: The Importance of Being Earnest by Oscar Wilde; Publisher: Norton Critical Edition; ISBN: A Man for All Seasons by Robert Bolt; Publisher: Vintage; ISBN: Additional suggestion: It is highly recommended that all IB Literature students see a live performance of Shakespeare this summer. Colorado Shakespeare Festival will be performing plays all summer, and they can be seen for a discounted ticket price at preview performances. Tickets can be obtained through the website: AP Literature and Composition (12 th Grade) 1. The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald; Publisher: Scribner; ISBN: Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen; Publisher: Norton Critical Edition; ISBN: To direct and deepen your reading, it is suggested that you annotate for characterization, setting, imagery, symbolism, key motifs, and any other aspects that help you interact with the text. Students should be prepared for a timed writing during the first week of school over the required summer reading texts, as well as over The Awakening by Kate Chopin; this text was read in AP Language and Composition. 1. The House of the Spirits by Isabel Allende; Publisher: Bantam Mass Market Paperback; ISBN:

5 2. Frankenstein by Mary Shelley; Publisher: Penguin Classics; ISBN: Beloved by Toni Morrison; Publisher: Vintage; ISBN: Othello by William Shakespeare; Publisher: Cambridge School Shakespeare (Cambridge University Press); ISBN: Additional suggestion: It is highly recommended that all AP Literature students see a live performance of Shakespeare this summer. Colorado Shakespeare Festival will be performing plays all summer, and they can be seen for a discounted ticket price at preview performances. Tickets can be obtained through the website:
