2 DEPARTMENTAL ACTIVITY REPORT GOLF Well, the rainfall in June was less than the deluges we received in May, but still added up to just under eight inches for the month. Some organized play was affected, and the golf shop had to issue some rain checks because of some afternoon downpours. Rounds are down this year, but if we plugged in our daily average to the days we have lost to weather, our rounds would be up. Anyway, we will get our 6 weeks of summer sometime before October 21st! Update on the Improvements to Hole #17 The damage to hole #17 from the new wall construction has been seeded and sodded and is growing in nicely. It will not be long until it is playable and no longer ground under repair. If you look closely at the photo below, you will notice a temporary fence that has been erected to catch golf balls that may roll back down the bank. This little fence saves them from hitting the cart path and then disappearing into oblivion! Our plan for a more permanent fix to this problem is to lay a curb on top of the wall using native stone. There is currently no timeframe for the stonework, but will be addressed in the near future. 2

4 AFTER! We have future plans to landscape the small, grassed area on the left side between the cart path and wall, but that will have to occur this fall or next spring so that the plants have a better chance at life. White flags have replaced the green flags to denote a middle-of-the-green hole location. The green flags were hard to distinguish against the flora in the background behind the greens. 4

5 The next page will show a couple of photos that represent the shade problem that we have with some greens on the back 9. The top picture is the 13th green and the lower picture is the 15th green. These greens are less than 50 yards apart from each other, but you can see that #15 is receiving a lot more sunlight than #13. Thirteen is not the only green with shade problems, but this situation is representative of similar conditions on #11, #12, #14, and #16. The 8th green on the front nine also struggles with shade problems due to some large white pines left of the green. Shade is a very detrimental environmental factor because it prevents photosynthesis, thins out the turf, and it also keeps wet areas from drying out fully. Future planning and budgeting will need to reflect tree pruning and removal to help us eliminate some of the shade problem and improve turf quality. #13 green, mid-morning: 5

6 #15, at the same time: Ball marks are a constant problem on our greens. This is a ball mark that was made after the green was mowed, but before the hole was changed. Therefore, it was a big, fat 6

7 fresh one and there was no effort made to repair it whatsoever! For size representation, that marker beside the ball mark is slightly larger than a quarter! We have placed buckets of divot mix that include sand and seed on some tees that tend to get a lot of damage from too much iron play. The golfers have been very receptive to this idea and they are using this mix and we are getting better recovery of the divots. We may look to increase the number of buckets in the future as this also helps the efficiency of the crew when they don t have to fill in the divots themselves 7

9 Finally, a THANK YOU to the volunteers who contribute their time and money to landscaping efforts on the golf course! There are many beautiful scenes I could pick from, but I decided to go with this picture of these beautiful hanging baskets at the #14 comfort station. Have a great summer and come out and enjoy the golf course! And if you don t play golf, come up and peruse the golf shop and grab a bite to eat at the 19th Hole! 9

10 OPERATIONS We are attacking water/flooding issues very aggressively this year. We have had some residents on Locust having flood problem for years and have taken measures to alleviate the problem. 10

12 This is an issue on River Hollow Road that we have taken corrective action on. In an effort to assist our Dog Walkers finding a refuge for their dogs waste we have installed waste containers at each Bath House. 12

13 The trees, logs and debris proved to be more than our staff and equipment could handle. We contracted to have this mess cleaned up. 13

15 Paul Waycaster, Golf Course Superintendent for 23 years, was honored in June for his years of outstanding service. 15

17 As I reported last month, we were experiencing a serious erosion problem on our lake around the entrance. This problem has been resolved 17

18 The Dog Park folks have supplied the money and we are providing labor for a new Dog Park Pavilion. 18

19 Although the small dog park in Laurel Hills was a good idea, the location was less than desirable. We have moved this dog park to a grassy area behind the Laurel Hills Cluster Mail Boxes. 19

20 RECREATION We had two Children s Craft Days. On the first we made Necktie key rings for Father s Day. We had 6 kids attend. On the second, we made Patriotic Wind Socks (not pictured). We had 13 kids attend. The new AED is now located in the Main Hall. The hard to close door to the Main Hall located by the Recreation Manager s office has been fixed thanks to Corky and Phillip. We have signed papers to become an official American Red Cross Shelter. This will help us be better prepared and equipped to handle evacuations. Our clubs are boasting good numbers and it appears participation is up at Recreation! The pool has hosted 1,173 during open swim and the organized swim participants are lining the pool edge all the way to the deep end. The Media Center continues to be a hub of activity. It has proven to be a great amenity to our residents and their guests. It was an early start to the Craft Fair this year, unintentional. We had several new vendors and 37 total vendors. We saw lots of traffic and I hope it was a good day for all. Thank you to our wonderful vendors whose talents amaze us every year. The 4th of July we ll see!!! 20
