2 Message to the Community Our Leadership Board Dear Community Partners, As we enter our seventh year of operations, Charitable Ventures of Orange County (CVOC) is proud to have incubated 27 charitable projects over the course of our history. Founded in 2007 to provide fiscal sponsorship for local initiatives, CVOC s sponsored projects now span such important issues as community development, mental health, child welfare, gang intervention, immigration, hunger and homelessness. Seed funding from the Orange County Community Foundation, along with in-kind support from The Olin Group, has allowed us to grow to support innovation and promote change in the region. By the end of FY 2013, we were able to attract more than $2,000,000 in private funding for projects we are currently sponsoring; and we expect our project revenue to grow this coming year. We are pleased to have begun a strategic partnership with Building Healthy Communities, a group working toward eradicating economic and educational disparities within Santa Ana. The OC Women s Health Project received substantial funding this year to explore ways to integrate health and domestic violence services in Orange County, and convened its annual Women s Health Policy Summit to discuss the impact of the Affordable Care Act on women s health. Three of our projects received their own 501(c) 3 determination letters, and are now launched on their own promises to be an even more active year. Three of our newest projects, California Network of Family Strengthening Networks, RAIZ and Project Kinship, are dedicated to strengthening family networks across California, promoting the civic participation of undocumented, documented and DACAmented youth and adults in Orange County, and serving high-risk, formerly gang-involved men and women respectively. We are proud of the expertise and breadth of our project activities, and the energetic staff dedicated to furthering these missions in the community. Our goals for 2014 include identifying additional qualified projects, improving our application process, supporting the development efforts of our project directors, training new projects on accounting and nonprofit finance protocols, and seeking program grants to help sustain and grow these community efforts. 3 About Charitable Ventures Our History Charitable Ventures of Orange County (CVOC) was launched by The Olin Group as a part of its mission to encourage the growth of innovative regional nonprofits. As a for-profit consulting firm dedicated to helping nonprofit organizations in Southern California, The Olin Group incorporated CVOC as a separate 501(c)3 nonprofit entity dedicated to providing fiscal sponsorship services. CVOC began in 2007 with seed funding from the Orange County Community Foundation and a commitment from The Olin Group to subsidize operations with staffing and infrastructure. CVOC provides community projects with fiscal sponsorship support, and continues to evolve inside a growing movement of fiscal sponsors dedicated to best practice and building communities through this model. What is Fiscal Sponsorship? Fiscal sponsorship is an activity by which a public charity, tax-exempt under Section 501(c)3 of the Internal Revenue Code, provides financial and programmatic oversight of unincorporated nonprofit projects, this allows those projects to receive grants and tax-exempt donations from government, foundations, and individuals. Fiscal sponsorship is a mechanism that can be used to support innovation in the nonprofit sector. Fiscal sponsors simultaneously enable the movement of money from funders to projects, ideas and organizations, while at the same time reducing the funding necessary for administration and infrastructure investment. Fiscal sponsors give community leaders an effective way to promote change, test a theory, or pilot models of intervention without incurring the legal costs of incorporation or the full staffing costs that can burden an emerging initiative. 4 Sponsorship Categories OC Deaf Literacy Project Strength in Support Santa Ana Building Healthy Communities Funder-Driven Intitiatives CVOC serves as a fiscal sponsor for regional funder initiatives, helping to distribute funds to regional projects in support of funder priorities. The California Endowment s Building Healthy Communities Initiative lives at CVOC and is focused on community development activities in Santa Ana. This annual initiative involves significant administrative and financial support, as it supports multiple staff and contractors and numerous activities in the community that require management. Limited Initiatives Many projects, such as capital campaigns, short-term planning projects, or one time fundraising events do not need on-going support and are not planning to incorporate to sustain operations. One recent example is the South Laguna Community Garden Project, a community initiative raising funds to create a permanent community garden in South Laguna Beach through the purchase of land and dedication of funds to operations. Incubation Some projects are in the process of incorporating and are awaiting their IRS determination letter. In these instances, CVOC provides both sponsorship and incubation support to ready these projects to launch on their own. Two recent projects, Strength in Support, a Veterans mental health project, and Caterina s Club, a meal distribution program in Anaheim, both moved on from CVOC after receiving their 501(c)(3) status and continue to operate in their communities. In our 6 year history CVOC has accelerated the success of 27 charitable projects. 3

6 Investing Where it Counts OC Deaf Literacy Project Santa Ana Building Healthy Communities, Madison Park Neighborhood Association Lives Worth Saving Education Initiatives In Orange County, our 28 school districts are working to educate a broad array of students from diverse backgrounds and with specialized needs including children with ADHD, Autism, speech impairments and those who are deaf. This need is growing and in Orange County, there was a 20.1% increase in the number of children diagnosed with development disabilities between 2003 and 2012 (Orange County Conditions of Children Report, 2013). OC nonprofits are working hard to support our schools and partnering with families to provide an appropriate learning environment for all children with the goal that all children will achieve success. CVOC has made it a priority to support projects that provide resources to these children and families: Child Development School at UC Irvine Orange County Deaf Literacy Project Community Initiatives CVOC s vision for community development in Orange County utilizes a holistic approach that encompasses community health, the environment and safe spaces, education and support of local youth. Through these avenues Orange County nonprofits are engaging the community in order to build stronger and more resilient local neighborhoods. 7 Orange County Adult Day Services Coalition Pathways to Opportunities Orange County Women s Health Project Youth and Family Initiatives Health Initiatives Strong families are powerful assets in the community. We are intentional about supporting projects that seek to break the cycle of poverty and bridge gaps that exist in our community, by providing parents with the resources, opportunities, programs, and education necessary to elevate themselves and, most importantly, their entire family out of poverty to become self-sufficient and productive members of the community. CVOC supports projects that seek to sustain improvements for health indicators and outcomes for OC residents.
