4 CEU Info Lesford Duncan, Afternoon Plenary Session: The Fight Against Human Trafficking: A Multidisciplinary Approach A. TITLE: The Fight Against Human Trafficking: A Multidisciplinary Approach B. LEARNING OBJECTIVES: 1. Discuss the global and domestic issue of human trafficking and commercial sexual exploitation 2. Identify key policies and programs that have been successful in reducing incidences of sexual exploitation, and restoring and empowering victims of sexual exploitation 3. Identify concrete steps in which social workers can engage in restoring victims of exploitation on an individual and macro (policy) level C. ABSTRACT Human trafficking has been identified as one of the world s leading illegal industries. It is estimated to bring in over $32 billion annually in revenues and exploits over 27 million men, women and children around the world, including here in the United States. While a great deal of attention has been given to international human trafficking taking place in regions such as Southeast Asia, Eastern Europe, and Northern Africa, insufficient attention has been given to the exploitation of individuals on the streets of San Bernardino County and throughout Southern California. Our efforts here thus far, while noble, have been fragmented and underfunded, and in order to address the issue of commercial sexual exploitation and other forms of trafficking, we will need a multidisciplinary approach that brings to the table all partners and key stakeholders (the community). D. OUTLINE a. Overview of the issue of human trafficking (namely commercial sexual exploitation) b. Highlights of successes in policies, programs and prevention (i.e. CA Proposition 35 and interagency collaborations) c. Steps moving forward and how social workers can engage in restoring victims of exploitation on an individual and macro (policy) level E. BIO Lesford Duncan, Child Abuse Prevention Coordinator for the County of San Bernardino Children s Network, has a passion for giving a voice to those who are unheard and unseen by society, including children who are abused, exploited and neglected. Lesford has raised awareness about and has worked on policy against human trafficking, and more specifically the commercial sexual exploitation of children. In 2012, as Los Angeles County Coordinator for California Against Slavery, his efforts were focused on the passage of Proposition 35, a successful ballot initiative increasing penalties on human traffickers and providing more services to victims of sexual exploitation. He has led other efforts domestically by working with local government, faith-based, community, and nonprofit organizations.

5 Lesford has served as a Global Citizenship Fellow for the U.S. Fund for UNICEF, and currently serves as a board and advisory board member to several organizations throughout Southern California serving victims of sexual violence and at-risk youth. Lesford received his Bachelors of Science from the University of Florida and a Masters of Public Health with a concentration in Health Policy from Loma Linda University. F. PRACTICE LEVEL: Which social work practice level(s) (students; BSW/entry level; MSW/intermediate; advanced level) will this session be primarily geared for? This session would be appropriate for all levels of social work students and professionals.
