1 News Release The Impact Group s Canada s Top Research Commercialization Organizations Toronto, 24 June 2013 Toronto consulting firm The Impact Group today released a report that ranks the activities and performance of Canada s top 33 public sector research and commercialization organizations. Included in the report is analysis of research commercialization at 28 universities, 2 university/hospital groupings and 4 hospitals/health authorities. 2 Using 2011 data from the Association of University Technology Managers (AUTM), The Impact Group has ranked the 33 leading institutions across Canada that are in the business of research and technology commercialization, on 13 different indicators: Total research Number of invention disclosures received from their researchers Number of invention disclosures per $M of research Number of patent applications submitted by the institution Number of patent applications per $M of research Number of patents issued to the institution Number of patents issued per $M of research Number of licenses executed with end users Number of licenses executed per $M of research Cumulative active licenses Total licensing income per institution Average licensing income per active license Licensing income per $M of research Attached to this release is a table of the top 10 organizations in each category of commercialization indicator. 3 Report Highlights Total research Total sponsored research s of the 33 organizations included in the study were $5.8 billion. Number of invention disclosures received from researchers The institutions received a total of 1,813 invention disclosures from its researchers in 2011 The top institution - University of Toronto - received 192 invention disclosures The top health institution - University Health Network - received 102 invention disclosures Number of invention disclosures per $M of research On average, the institutions received 0.31 disclosures per $M of sponsored research they conducted The leading institution - University of Guelph - received 1.28 disclosures per $M of research The top health institution - University Health Network - received 0.39 disclosures per $M of research Number of patent applications submitted In total the institutions submitted 833 patent applications in 2011 The leading institution - Université de Montréal - applied for 122 patents The top health organization - BC Cancer Agency - applied for 22 patents Number of patent applications per $M of research For each $M of research funding the institutions on average applied for 0.14 patents École de technologie supérieure made 1.08 patent applications per $M of research BC Cancer Agency applied for 0.38 patents per $M of research Number of patents issued s received a total of 178 patents in 2011 University of Toronto received 22 of them BC Cancer Agency received 8 patents Number of patents issued per $M of research In total, institutions received patents per $M of research École de technologie supérieure received 0.19 patents per $M of research BC Cancer Agency received 0.14 patents per $M of research Page 3 of 12
