Within the Åbo Akademi University, Centre of Excellence Programme, Department of Psychology, main project (psychology): Behavior Genetics of Sexual Dysfunctions, Aggressive Behavior, and Mediating Hormones. The research in logopedics at Åbo Akademi University is not substantially related to the main focus but the same twin cohort and methods for analyzing the results has been used. The aim of this project is to explore the role of genetic and environmental factors in the development of voice and speech disorders. Data has been gathered from a total of 1728 twins who have been screened for voice, speech and language disorders using a questionnaire. The results are now being analyzed. I act as Director of Research for this project within logoedics and my own interest has been in voice and occupational voice disorders. In order to strengthen the claim that a voice disorder really is occupational it would be important to be able to distinguish between voice disorders related to environmental factors (including excessive vocal loading in demanding occupations such as teaching) and voice disorders due to genetic factors. 2. In cooperation with logopedics at the University of Turku and Turku Institute for Child and Youth Research (established in 2006 as a joint endeavor of all the seven institutions of higher education operating in Southwest Finland): Development and disorders of speech, language and communication in mono and bilingual children. In the study we will follow the language and

2 speech development of mono/bilingual Finnish and Swedish speaking children belonging to a birth-cohort (year 2008 approximately 4000 children). The children will be followed from infancy to school age. The main aims of this study are to gather information about language and speech development of mono/bilingual children, to explore the prevalence of different kind of speech and language disorders and to explore the risk profiles of language and speech disorders. The heredity of speech and language impairment and related learning difficulties will also be studied. Previous projects: Member of a multidisciplinary team researching voice disorders among students (University of Helsinki, Turku University Central Hospital, The Student Health Care Center, Turku) Several publications (see the publication list).
